I remember one time I was waiting at the bus stop going to work. One guy pulled up in his car, rolled down his window and said
"You're getting the number [redacted] bus, right?"
I said "yeah".
He said "I normally get that one too. Let me give you a lift."
I didn't recognise him or his car, but I thought "fuck it, I'm late for work" and got in a complete stranger's car anyway.
I was young and reckless, and also (and still) male, which certainly colours how I approach those types of incidents.*
I want to know, though, what risky, "this could have been my demise" things have you done? |

I have taken lifts from strangers three times so far, twice in Scotland and once in Sweden. Two of them have been single women who gave me, a single male solo traveller a lift. I would say they are the ones who made a risky choice |

One risky thing I did was to invite a "couple" to the bnb I was staying in, without having a call or a social. One guy alone turned up at the door and said his wife was busy. Had to send him away. That could have been it for me. |

I was like 9 years old and cycled into a railway line electricity substation because I was in awe of the hum of transformers. Thought back then that as long as I'm not too close to metal I'll be ok.
Quite how I'm still alive I don't know. |

I have a few:
The worst one was when I was in Miami when I was 17bwith some other girls. Went to a club and met some guys. We talked about going to a different club and they insisted on driving us. We went. Anything could have happened.
First time meet with a guy from here. Meet at a tesco near his to get some supplies and then walk to his. We saw a group of lads who seemed to be waiting for us. I just thought "and this is how I'm going to die".

Had a mad friend who was super sociable when I was in my early 20s & lived in Scotland, had a couple of nights out ending in random house parties of the people she'd get chatting to on the night. Then, not knowing what part of the city I was in, dragging myself out d*unk, walking home solo in the early hours, hailing a random cab if I found one but not always. I look back & cringe! |

On a solo holiday, got chatted up in a club by a stunning woman, then a guy came over , he had arms like popeye !
Anyway she told me it was her husband, crapped myself , as she had her hand on my arse at the time, said don’t worry we are swingers and would I like to come back there hotel .
On the way there I did have visions of being beaten up or worse, but thought fuck it , hadn’t had anything like this before.
Turned out to be amazing in the end and so began my love for swinging . |

I've asked for directions to certain parts of cities, when I've been walking back to where I've parked. Then the person has said that they are also going that way, "so can I have a lift?.. and I can direct you on the way.". It's worked out OK.
Accepted lifts in Australia when cars have stopped & asked if I needed a lift also, with no problems .
This was before I'd seen the "wolf creek" films though. |

D*unk on hooch, when with my older cousin on holiday in the US, (when I was 15), I told a guy on the corner at a gas station that he looked "like he was in a gang & was it a real gun?" My cousin was so freaked & dragged me back to the car! |

Three times I've picked up random men from the side of the road, 1 was waiting at a bus stop I recognised him from a band I had once seen play in a local pub, he looked wary but got in.
The 2nd stopped me and asked for directions He has just arrived in the country to work on a farm for the summer, I decided it was easier to give him a lift rather than give directions.
The 3rd was waiting beside his car with a petrol can, everyone just driving past, I stopped and drove him to a petrol station and back to his car, he bought me a box of chocolates today thank you, and they were bought from the garage so must id cost nearly a million trillion pounds.
I'm not a risky person but I seem to be a sucker for sad men, standing on the side of the road |

I was in London with a friend, getting the last train home (I'd like to say we had been out drinking etc but we had been to stand outside Liam Gallaghers house all day). 2 random Irish men started following us and started talking to us, now I love an Irish man (I was 18 at the time), we got chatting one took my number (come to think of it, I always say I have never pulled and always forget this).
I get home, he calls me and we chat for hours. A few days later, I met up with him, we went to an Irish bar (obviously) and then he just takes me back to this randoms house, I think it was in angel somewhere? See no clue! I stay the night with lots of other people and he walks be back to the bus stop the next morning, no clue where I am, got home, got straight in my work stuff and went to work.
Never done anything like it or done anything since then like it lol.
Also, not sure doughnut has ever heard this story lol |

Drove through Kenya, at night, on our own after nearly getting beaten up and all our stuff nicked
Massive risk but we had no choice
Just had the rough guide to direct us to the nearest safe place

Under fire from katusha rockets in Israel when I was 18, mugged in the pueblos jovenes of Lima when I was 23 (shouldn't have been on my own taking photos of the shanty towns), drove through the streets of Phnom Penh during a military coup to rescue a female colleague when I was 36. Its been quite peaceful since returning permanently to the UK. |

Used to run through a rail tunnel near to my childhood home. About 3/4 mile long.
Really fucking stupid, not really thinking about the consequences of a train coming through it and we were half way through with no refuge to avoid getting clobbered.
A bit more than risky. |

A friend backed out of travelling together, so I hitchhiked to Switzerland. A man picked me up somewhere around London and knew a shortcut from the M25. Then told me he'd just get out of prison and the details of the violent offences that get his sentence extended, including what would be fatal injuries . I was planning to jump out of the car, when we started driving in deserted lanes. He dropped or dumped me somewhere south, Grateful not to have experience anything other than being frightened. He'd poured boiling water over and done worse things to people. |

Walked home d*unk late at night in the pouring rain in a tight white top, short black skirt and heels (my office outfit, I was carrying my jacket as I didn't want to get it wet lol). I was soaked to the skin and my white top was totally transparent. I have a sizeable pair of boobs so as a 23 year old walking along with big wet visible boobs, short skirt and high heels I probably looked like a lady of the night, but was too d*unk to care. I had 3 cars with male drivers stop and offer me a lift. Wasn't d*unk enough to accept, but one guy cruised his car alongside me as I walked, trying to get me in his car and scaring me. There was a guy much younger than me walking towards me and I stopped him and asked if he'd walk me home because of the guy in the car. He walked me home and I let him in my house and "ahem" I was "grateful". Alcohol is a killer of common sense. |

Lol. I don't know. For me it was jumping out of the frying pan into the fire. He was about 18 and I literally jumped him because alcohol makes me extremely horny, but not stupid enough to get in a strangers car, just stupid enough to ravish the kind boy who walked me home. Could have been a lot worse lol . |
