Pauper's Funerals

Reports that so called Pauper's funerals or public health funerals are up by about a quarter in the last five years. A typical pauper's funeral is unattended and often a burial in a shared grave with no headstone to cut costs to local authorities. Campaigners want these funerals to be attended and paid for by the taxpayer. Should the financial burden be it on the taxpayer?

What's going on here? It's all over the news

Well as they're already funded by the state I guess taxes do indeed pay for them Tom

They are funded by local authorities and indirectly through the Poll Tax which of course is paid for by localtaxpayers. Paupers funerals are often called public health funerals were there often no next of kin to pay hence done as cheaply as possible and often in an unmarked corner of a cemetery

I'm very lucky my parents have prepaid for theirs and so has my sister so I don't have the cost to bear, I will be sorting mine out too in the next year or so, so doughnut and my boys don't have to worry when the time comes (even wrote stuff about my life etc, it's all pretty much "done")

As for paupers funerals, I hate to say it, they are probably going to start being the norm in a few years as no one really has the the cash, my brother got example, god knows what I'll do when he passes away, as he has the mindset "life is for living and I don't care what happens when I'm dead" which is ok I guess but it kinda stresses me out a little as I'm the only one around who will sort this stuff out, no one can convince him to prepay for it but when he does pass, I have no idea how I will pay for it currently.

I’ve been to one of these funerals. They still have a vicar and a very short service if there are people that want to attend.

The only rule was no flowers were allowed.

Do they say why they want the funeral to be attended?

If they're not going to be paid for from taxation of some kind it would need to be charity.

Some people on certain benefits can claim from the Government am allowance.

"Some people on certain benefits can claim from the Government am allowance. "

Yes they can. It was offered to my dad when mum died. He didn't need it so he didn't apply.

Everyone should be able to die in the knowledge that they'll have a dignified funeral if that's what they want.
