I'm contracted for minimum 30 hrs but normally do about 36, usually 8 hrs ish, 5 days a week. At the moment my job is very easy but I'm wanting a promotion in the next couple of months and there is a good chance I will get it, which means more money but any chance of having a life will be on the cards lol x |

I spent years working too hard. Worrying about the job even when I was at home. Taking the laptop on holidays with me. Getting up in the middle of the night when some hint came to me about a problem. Stress. Too little time for my wife and family.
Almost 12 months ago suddenly burned out totally, couldn't write one line of software for over 9 months, only just about capable of doing it now. Slowly doing a little on personal projects, can't touch a keyboard for any paying job.
Fortunately in a financial position where, just before last Christmas, I could declare myself as being retired.
Would I do it differently if I could do it over again? I'd try to balance it a bit better. And there's definitely a few projects where I'd tell my managers "fuck it, you're wrong, we do it my way or I'm out of the door", which would have saved me years worth of anxiety.
Maybe it wouldn't have changed anything, but I wish that I'd valued myself and my loved ones more, instead of putting my total self into a job where nobody ever said thank you. |

I work when I am needed. There are things I am good at and things I am not good at. Being an employee that toes the line is one of the things I am not good at. My value to the company with the things I am good at hugely outweighs my inability to be an employee and so I am played to my strengths. Works for me and works for the company. |

I did. Worked up to 80 hours a week. Always on call whilst on leave. Invariably had to break from my holiday to deliver a presentation or clean a fan because the shit had hit it. No one gave zero fucks. So I quit. Best thing I ever did. |

Absolutely not. As a manager the most important thing I have control over for me and my team is time. In the military I assessed workload, and worked out staffing needs. If I could let guys go early I would. Its amazing how hard people will work if they know they can finish at 2am rather than 6am on a nightshift. And they aren't as fragged by the end of the week.
In my current job I have fostered a flexible culture where, if my team have genuinely run out of tasks for the day and they are just filling time to watch the clock.. I encourage them to go home. They put the hours in when needed. Missing rush hour traffic is a bonus.
If I work into an evening or weekend, I sign off emails letting people know I am working flexibly and as an exception and I don't expect them to reply out of hours. I also let them know that I will bank those extra hours to take in lieu, and they get the same courtesy.
I'm aware not every job or sector has this way of working. |
