Bristol

No such thing as a cheap hotel in a city no more.

Looking at Bristol in a couple of weeks (Bristol social) and can’t find anything for less than £150 for central Bristol. I know you can’t send links, but any helpful hints appreciated.

somewhere

I work in a hotel, a "budget" one at that, most I've seen the price is £175 FOR ONE NIGHT!! even with a nice discount I still wouldn't pay over £100.

Depends what's going on in the area, supply and demand and we are still full every night with those prices

Depends on the day and what's going on in the location.

I've got a hotel for £35 in Birmingham tomorrow.

Top tip is look further out than the centre and getva taxi/uber. Usually saves a fortune.

There's a big gig on at Ashton Gate that date too. A lot of places will be booked up for that.

Try looking on third party booking agencies. I know some might appear a scam (and some are) but there are those that offer brilliant discounts and you'll still have the cancellation policies. I'm not sure I can mention sites sadly.

There's also the option of staying at motorway hotels, those close to it and getting a taxi/public transport in. During weekends they're often cheaper (depending on location of venues), city centre hotels are typically busiest Mon-Wed with corporate guests and Friday, Saturday night with leisure. Signing up to a hotel's guest reward scheme can be a good idea as well - it can help unlock discounts that aren't found through search engines.

Sometimes it can pay to book somewhere with a cancellation policy and then set up price notifications - you can find that occupancy levels drop in the run up to a certain date (as people cancel) and relative bargains can be found.

I do think that generally there's been a massive increase in demand for British hotels, especially within the city centre and it's a bit late to be looking sadly.

A combination of factors like it being Summer, events like gigs and weddings... people have more of a social life and so pricing reflects that.

Good luck OP.

I found a bloomin’ *gorgeous* hotel in York when I stayed for a while last year. Definitely gonna stay there again next time. Even if it makes my bank account weep a little.

Try all the late booking sites or ring the hotel direct and ask what their best price is. Sometimes you can get a cheaper price or they'll offer you a dinner bed and breakfast deal or something

Stayed in a primer inn in Cardiff centre after a gig on a Friday night for £45. Maybe there an event on in Bristol hiking up the prices. Is it near university graduation or something as that bumps up prices in the summer.

I don't feel the need to waste money, just because it costs more it doesn't mean it's going to be better.

Better spending the money you've saved on things that will last.

Interesting that you automatically label it a waste.

Some people value amenities, surroundings, service levels, luxury, facilities etc, and if they value those things and enjoy them, then obviously it’s not a waste.

Splashing money doesn’t automatically mean a product is better, agreed, but if you know what you’re spending your money on, and enjoy it, then it’s good value.

Some of the most expensive meals I’ve had, for example, have also been the best value, as they have provided amazing enjoyment and memories.

Likewise, some of my hotel stays.

Just because you see zero value in anything other than a comfortable bed doesn’t mean that others are wrong.

Each to their own!

But you don't need to spend lots of money to make memories or to enjoy yourself is my point.

I guess it all depends how materialistic you're, I could have just as much fun camping for a weekend with a group of good friends as I could staying in a swanky hotel.

Either way I've made memories but one of them has given me more options after the weekend is over.

Yes some of my greatest memories have been free too.

But the point I’m making is that if I enjoy the range and quality of facilities and services that a good hotel provides, then that’s my choice.

Simply stating they hotels are just a place to sleep doesn’t respect other people’s views and preferences.

If all you want is a bed, fine, that’s your choice.

I've stayed in all sorts of places...from hostels to BNbs to luxury hotels.

I feel weird in a luxury hotel....cause I'm not used to all the luxury and I don't use all the luxury. Lol!

Hostel with friends was pretty cool. as well as hotels with family where we all sleep top to toe in one bed. Lol!

I prefer smaller hotels with the basics where I can see the owner/staff every day and have a chat.

The bigger the hotel and the more demanding the guests the less of a personalised service you get in my experience.

UK hotel, rail and taxi prices are the reason, I do not go on holiday in the UK.

my friends that have the best times in the UK, go and stay in a caravan or campsite...I do not have much of a tolerance for being cold, wet and muddy but the caravan sounds ok as long as everything works so you can get clean, warm and dry.

Cackle...

Some people like the finer things in life..some of us like the simpler things in life like sunning my naked fat arse with a bottle of rose that I got from the French Spar ( a dream I hope to replicate soon)..I draw the line at camping...I'm only going camping in the desert. I don't like being cold, wet and muddy. I do not know how the Glastonbury kids do it.

Champagne? I don’t really see much difference between a house champagne and a premium marque, but not a fan of Prosecco at all, way too sweet.

Sometimes you just need a bed to crash in and shower.

But if you shop around different third party websites etc you can definitely find some decent deals.

I think most people won't know what they like unless they go to a tasting that is properly paired with food/appetisers and they have the time to smell and savour the flavour...slowly.

Now there's a rum vault in Barbados that doesn't require food...Lol!

People just have their preferences from the knowledge and resources that they have.

I don't like beer but I'll have a shandy. I don't like Guinness but I will drink Jamaican Guinness punch.

It might be part of my autistic masking but I can slot in where necessary and not turn up my nose at the most luxury or the most cheap/simple/homely things.

But my happiest default is the chill vibes at the beach.

Like I remember coming back from the beach and unfortunately covering my hotel room in sand. lol! I'd feel guilty if the maid had to clean that up every day...even though I know it's her job. yeah I'm the one who cleans most of the sand out of the rental jeep before I send it back to the car hire company. Lol! yes I'm the one who cleans and clears that table after I'm finished at KFC/Caffe Nero.

Unfortunately, I think everything is just more expensive due to Covid, Brexit and the cost of living/inflation. We just make do and mend and read money saving expert. lol!

Yeah I still remember the time I had a glass of champagne from a bottle that my friend got given by his boss, tasted like toilet cleaner and cost £250

Sounds bad. What champagne was that then?

Do you like champagne?

I have no idea, it was a small bottle as well and I'd rather have a prosecco or jd and mixer

Problem solved, order a drink that you actually loke! ??

Most times, I enjoy a pint, particularly Guinness when I am back home in Dublin. But I enjoy wine with a meal.

Champagne? I don’t really see much difference between a house champagne and a premium marque, but not a fan of Prosecco at all, way too sweet.

If you like Prosecco, have you tried Asti Spumante? "

We all like what we like and I have tried that but only the one time, I just drink JD and only at parties or if out

Privates notes: Do not take Dream to champagne tasting. Lol! Whiskey tasting yes... Coca-Cola factory tour even better.

I'd try it, might find a £10 bottle I like "

All over

Hotels have got ridiculously expensive bot here and abroad. Some of the prices can't really be justified in my opinion especially service has go e down also in many instances but people still seem to pay as everyone wants a little break. They charge whatever they likecas there is still high demand

We can only afford them rarely and wouldn't call them swanky.

We've noticed lots cost cutting too. There's a terrible shortage of staff which goes some way to explaining the drop in service. We've noticed that the housekeeping staff seem to be the most dedicated.

Really? You’ve been saying you see no point in a hotel other than a comfy bed!

I’m confused now …

Sometimes I just need somewhere to stay, and a basic hotel or bnb does the trick. Other times, hotel facilities and quality are more important … different trips, different choices

Agreed. Hotel prices have increased massively in recent years, way above the rate of inflation

I didn't say that, look back at the wording

I said what's the point in spending lots on one.

For me it just needs a good bed, be clean and have a shower that works

They really are, especially for Saturday nights but I like to think I can afford a nice night away once in a while. I wouldn't settle for an absolute dive though, no matter how cheap it is. If it's something I'm not doing often, I'd like it to be decent

One thing I’ve found useful for visiting major cities is being a member of a club that has good reciprocal rights with clubs in other cities / countries.

Quite often, staying in clubs cost half or even a third of the cost of an equivalent hotel in a major city.

I’ve used this quite often in London, paris, the US and a few cities in Asia (Eg HK).

That’s what I have seen too. I spoke to a friend in the travel industry, and he said it’s very pronounced in destinations / hotels that have a strong number of visitors from the US … so finding locations that aren’t popular with Americans is more likely to help in finding a reasonable rate.

For example, Florence and Venice, prices have gone through the roof, but somewhere like Trieste offers better value in Italy.

Thank you so much everyone for your comments, great to hear reasons for and against different options. I quite like the idea of an über, that way we can maybe get something a little more for our money on the outskirts, rather than the expensive central city mid range hotels. So back to searching with a little wider look. Only ever used uber once, so will see how it goes

Air BnB might be worth looking at

Hampshire/Dorset

Sundays and Thursdays seem to be the cheapest nights, I just stayed in a budget ibis for less than 40 quid, which included breakfast.

But it amazes me how wildly it varies from each night and month to month.

Best prices I found were through vio . com but bookings dot com is good to, so is Trip. You can get extra discounts if you book your travel through them too.
