I read an interesting article about how a small town in france called seine port voted to ban smartphones in front of the citys schools and in smaller public gatherings, at the same time, the municipality has committed to building a sports field and starting a film club for young people.
The mayor will also offer junior high school students a basic mobile phone without internet connection for free, if their parents promise not to give them a smartphone before high school, it mentioned that it is a legally tricky project and of course, no fines can be imposed, but it is part of a growing trend in france an not just that, even eric cantona is against it and has banned his two youngest to use mobile phones and has in the coup become something of a figurehead for a problem most parents can relate to.
What is your view about it and do you think that they should ban mobiles phones for the younger ones and can you relate to the problem that most parents seem to have and should it be implemented in the uk and rest of the world?
I hink that something should be done, but as the article said that a good solution would be to give them a basic mobile phone instead |

It’s a great idea. There is so much evidence now that screen time has such a negative impact on children’s development. Plus a growing realisation that parents screen time also has a negative impact on children’s development.
So anything that reduces screen time for children has to be a good thing |

Bit late now. The genie is well and truly out of the box.
For a start, most of the parents had their brains numbed by television and the gutter press even before they themselves got dragged into the phonocentric lifestyle.
Far too late for any other choice than evolution setting the scene. |

"Oh i wish ... so many young people don't have basic social skills and are self confined to their bedroom heads buried in devices!"
When they grow up they can aspire to be in someone else’s bedroom buried deep in them.

I heard something on the news this morning about a town or school somewhere in the UK is proposing to ban pupils from having smart phones in schools until they are fourteen, I think we have been down this road before and most think it would be unenforceable. For all the good modern technology does is it out weighed by the bad things, most of us would be guilty of wasting time when we should be working on these devices at the very least. |

The problem with banning things is that it does not educate people so they can make informed choices. If there's a problem to tackle with young people (or with us adults who have created the current world conducive to the perceived smartphone problem), then that's what should be tackled. Banning a hammer will make people use a club to hit a nail, but won't stop them trying to nail things.
bannung smartphones use in public: then the kids will hide to use them, or simply stay indoors even more to use it at home or play their consoles. |

Such a typically backwards, boomerish "man yells at cloud" response to technology the older generation doesn't understand.
Why buy smartphones for your kids, then complain that they're using them too much? Is there that much of a lack of stimulation around them that they feel the need to retreat into whatever's happening on their phone, rather than engage with you?
Old parents always do things like this. This generations smartphones, was the last generations video games, and the previous generations walkmans & personal stereos.
Much ado about nothing. And of course they're French |

So for me ban them for kids, ban them in schools they aren't needed, they get in the way of life |

I seem to recall a distant memory from more than half a century ago a thing that most of you probably don't know ever existed was becoming fairly easily available and it was going to cause the end of civilization, it was the transistor radio and used by some of us teenagers to blare out pop music in public places and send old folks to an early grave lol. |

They did the exact same thing with computer/video games when I was young. From the "Nintendo killed my son" headlines in the S*n when people were trying to suggest playing Super Mario Bros could give you a seizure, to having Lorraine Kelly on GMTV trying to tell us that playing the original Grand Theft Auto (yes, the really old, dodgy framerate, birds-eye view GTA for the Playstation One), was going to turn us all into serial killers.
Plus ça change |

my grandparents thought television turned people in to idiots, my dad's mum watched with the brightness turned down so low you could barely make out what was on the screen and a green eye shade on in case it damaged her eyes. What she'd make of the huge screens we have now I do not know. |

You see, this is how you can tell it's a load of old boomer-think.
So rather than use smartphones, a bunch of old people thinks it's better idea to have their kids running around risking brain damage (or boredom) by playing rugby, or to be sat in a room all day watching films, raising the next generation of telly addicts.
Sounds a lot like what kids used to do for "fun" 40 years ago |

There are certainly some people of around my age who have their telly on from the minute they get up (it's just so they know what the time is apparently) until they go to bed |

As said before- it’s a bit late now, only the most hardened parents will be for this and we’re in the generation where the parents are also glued to phones as they/we have grown up with the introduction to them so realistically there is no way these parents are going to be banning kids using them.
Something needs to be done about a lot of the content that is allowed on a lot of these social media video scrolling sites. |

Who cares if parents are glued to them? They’re adults. Parents also drink alcohol, doesn’t mean they let their kids do it. |

Ironic that this is happening in France, a country where 12 year olds are drinking red wine with their afternoon meal |

My point being that if the parents are on them, a vast percentage aren’t going to be that bothered about their kids being on them. |
