To me it means they have a job which means it's difficult to meet during the day. They're probably not into outdoor meets and worry about being found on Fab due to their careers.
Don't understand why this comes up so often on here. The majority of us conjure an idea of the type of person who writes professional. It's either for you or not. Nobody cares if someone writes they are intelligent on their profile, and there are plenty of threads on here about what that means in general. So I think it's a word that some people get worked up about for whatever reason.
All in all, it doesn't matter what the writer thinks about the word on here, only the reader. |

I like to see when folk put professional on their profiles, sometimes I read it "I'm a total up my own arse individual" and they probably wouldn't fancy me anyway.
But actually like someone else said, it's probably more to let the reader know time is limited and privacy is an issue x |

"Simple really. You are either a manual worker and get hour hands dirty or a professional who sits in an office and has probably completed further education. "
What if you're a manual worker who gets paid for what they do? Would that make you a professional or semi pro? |

I'm not sure what you mean? I can't think of any manual workers who don't get paid for what they do?? |

We’ve got it on our profile -it’s mean to say a few things
- discretion is crucial to us (same as lots of people on here)
our look and feel is smart / dressed up we are looking for same in others
we’re educated (same as lots of people on here) and that attracts or intimidates some
people so best to flag up before wasting peoples time

I just assumed professional could mean engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as a pastime? |

" How do them attributes make you a professional out of interest? We all require discretion, we all like somebody whose nicely dressed and we all are pros certainly if we work, its kinda pointless don't you think its like the legal disclaimer, just use your preferences to filter out those you aren't interested in |

A professional is a member of a profession or any person who works in a specified professional activity. The term also describes the standards of education and training that prepare members of the profession with the particular knowledge and skills necessary to perform their specific role within that profession. In addition, most professionals are subject to strict codes of conduct, enshrining rigorous ethical and moral obligations. Professional standards of practice and ethics for a particular field are typically agreed upon and maintained through widely recognized professional associations. So the law society for example or the solicitors regulation authority or the British medical association. Very often it is a role that could be described as pep . A politically exploded person. Or someone who is in financial control and open to the threat of professional and financial exposure by being exposed as being on fab. And yes it would be a breach of the ethical and moral standards of some associations. Law and accountancy as strong examples |

I have it in mine. It describes my work life balance , travel , inability to meet now, kinds of risks I would not take and kinds of experiences I’m looking for.
The feedback I get it’s a fairly useful thing to put on here for setting expectations.

"If one word on a profile puts you off it just means you're not compatible with that person/people.
It isn't intended to insult you or make the person feel superior to you. "
Pretty much this.
I never understood why some folk get so uppity…….some say enraged even, about a single word. |

Professional and exceptional seem to wind people up for some reason.
People have given alternative explanation for both than thinking they are above others but people will still just go with their own interpretation.

I'm a professional male and will only meet professional women (harlots at worse, femme fatales at best). These women should be professionally accredited and professionally appraised. They should also be professionally educated and profess to being professional themselves on their profiles. I make no compromises.
These women must, I repeat, •must• have a professional job and be aloof, superior and supercilious.
In return I shall promise to make love to them like a professional, lest my standards slip and all they receive is a fessional fuck, perish the thought. |

Personally on its own professional doesn't put us off but coupled with a few other choice words it can soon make it sound like the person writing it takes themselves very seriously which doesn't lead to good meets in our experience |

"Professional male, Professional Female, Professional Couple.
What is this? Are you a professional and if so what are you professional at?"
We’re doing this again?
Ok. “Professional” refers to someone whose job is a profession … they will have letters after their name indicating which profession they qualified in, will pay annual subscriptions to the professional body that they are a member of, and will partake in an ongoing CPD programme to ensure that they are up to date with professional standards.
Examples: architect, engineer, accountant. |

"I've taken it to mean lawyer, accountant, banker - shirt, blouse, suit for work type thing. "
Yes. Gives a certain picture of the person posting.
Some people will find that attractive, some won’t. Some will prefer army types, or builders, or tradesmen.
Nothing wrong with saying what your background is. But some people get a bit chippie and take “professional” to mean “I’m better than you” |

I’m absolutely proud of being a professional.
Growing up in a deprived area of Dublin, studying hard and getting a professional qualification was my ticket to a more comfortable life, and luxuries / travel that I couldn’t have dreamt of as a kid.
I have no idea why the word triggers some people, but I’m proud that I qualified and grateful for the opportunities that that brought. |

Trying to make themselves sound superior?
By saying they’re professionals?
I just don’t see that. It’s simply a statement regarding their work background. |

Yep and that absolutely isn't the case. I work at a desk as a professional. However, that in no way means people manual skills are any less skilled or important. Heck if your boilers on the blink at xmas there's bugger all 30k of education and exams is going to do to keep you warm.
Do think some of it translates to sexual desires and fantasies eg the naughty secretary fuck or the handyman visiting while hubby is away. |
