Do you have a railcard?
Jump to: Newest in thread
I got the annual goldcard for free with my Oyster Annual travelcard. I use the gold card about once or twice a month when I go outside London. As with all these cards, it boils down to how often you travel. |

I bought my first railcard in January this year and it already paid for itself with the saving I got in my train ticket to Northampton . Network rail card is £30 for the year.. think you might get some offers online though |

There are no appropriate railcards for me for the past decade, so I use the train a lot less now."
I was able to get a network rail one , might be worth looking into |

I don’t have one.
Everywhere is easy enough to travel to in the car or on the bus, so there’s no real need for one. I think it would be handy to have if you’re commuting daily, though. |

I've gotten used to trains as a last resort now. It wouldn't get the use the old one did even if it was applicable to my age group and routes. |

I had a senior rail card for a while. Our daughter and I often took train trips but the service became so unreliable due to strikes etc that we use the car now.
It was worth it though and if the strikes ever come to an end I'll buy another |

When the kids still travelled for free we had a TwoTogether card. Now we have a family one. It saves us a lot of money as we travel up to Scotland at least a couple of times a year, but it's also nice to save on the smaller day trips out. |

We've got a "Two Together" one. I think it's a bit of a swizz actually, but we were persuaded by a man at Oxford Rd station that it would save us money on tickets to London.
I don't qualify for a disabled persons railcard |

"

What???"
I don't receive disability benefits OR my disability isn't one of the specifically named ones (sight loss, hearing loss, epilepsy etc).
I'm ineligible.
I CAN, but only if I buy tickets at a ticket booth, get a 33% discount for being a wheelchair user who doesn't occupy a seat but only for travel right now, on the day and off peak. I can't get that discount for advance fares or buy buying online/on an app. Please bear in mind that if, as a wheelchair user, you don't pre-book assistance at least 48h ahead of travel, they cannot guarantee to assist you and can in fact decline to assist you. So, to get a 33% discount for bringing my own chair, I have to gamble
The hilarious thing is my gym PT, who does not class himself as disabled at all, IS eligible via the list of qualifying health conditions above. We joke about that a lot |

I have a senior Railcard. I've saved a fortune with it.
I travelled down to Cornwall and back first class for the price of standard class.
I also have a senior oyster card and all travel in London after 9:30 is free |

A 26-30 one should in theory save you 1/3. I see the young folk on the trains with em. Still my be better to just book tickets in advance though if you plan when you're travelling. |

But if you book in advance you can still get 1/3 off |

I have a Network Railcard. It gets me a third off all rail travel in the South East. I think it cost me about £20 for the year, so I only needed to take two trips up to London and I'd already got my money back! |

It’s now £30 but if you use Clubcard points you can get railcards for free |

It's not available to us northerners who travel to London more than twice a year though |

yes the railcards are well worth having the rail card.
usually they are a third of any fare you see, including things like train line.
this reduction in the fare often means that you can go first class for less than the normal fair. making the train trip cheap.
also depending on which rail card that you have, you are allowed to take another person with you at the discounted fare.
if you have to pay for a rail card to get one, then the cost of fare when you first use it, will be more than the cost of the rail card. so the second time used so much cheaper again.
well worth having them |

It will depend on your personal circumstances, particularly train use. I have a student Railcard and save more than the cost.
It's fairly easy to calculate what you'd possibly save per trip and compare to the card price. 3 year cards are better value.
Look for the frequent bargain discounts.
Check if you can get one via Tesco clubcard points. |
