Each and everyone to their own. I won’t criticise anyone on the grounds of race, gender or sexuality. That would be both wrong and unfair. But I won’t be using pronouns anytime soon, that imo, is taking it too far. |

It's so confusing when words change meaning, or rather how they are used is changed.. Woke used to be woke but seems it now means cunt, sick used to mean sick but now means fucking awesome... Won't somebody please think of the children |

I saw Bobbie Davro at my place of work a couple of weeks ago. He told a few jokes, some of them very near the knuckle. But he also mentioned losing his girlfriend to cancer last year. I remember getting the impression that he was depressed. Remember the song ‘Tears of a Clown?’ My point being that we can all say things in the moment that we might not usually say. It is wrong to judge people on words. It is deeds that matter. |

Depends on your definition of woke I suppose.
I only see it used ironically or by people who refuse to accept the way the world is changing around them.
So what it actually means is somewhat lost on me |

OP I think a better term that might be more suitable for you is " cancel culture"
I'm all for stamping out racism, and all the other ism's and getting rid of ignorance and bigotry.
What I refuse to accept is people who censor others based on what they percive could be offensive to others without even asking the others if they are offended in any way.
I'll tell a quick story.
A few years ago I took part in a course for disabled awareness the lovely lady that hosted it was amazing disabled from birth and in a wheelchair.
The discussion basically went, she was explaining that for some people it's just not understanding or being scared to ask that could be mistaken for ignorance, people not knowing what to say and how to say it.
She explained obviously she can educate people if they ask her about specific needs or in what way to address her disability she can discuss this, some people generally really don't know how to approach disability and their default is ignore it take the piss, this can be changed.
What really pissed her off was able bodied people who assumed that they know what's best for her and other disabled people and making a decision on what they think is offensive to them.
As she said " I'm a grown woman I can make my own choices and decision's thank you"
Not some patronising shit who doesn't know her.
So whilst it's not exactly the same I believe this is where we are people choosing for others on what they percive as offensive without even asking the group in question.
OBVIOUSLY there's some things that anyone with half a brain cell would know is offensive.
It's the stuff a level or so down from that.
Who decides?? |

I wouldn’t compare it to the word sick. |

Further up this thread you said you won’t be using pronouns (words which matter a lot to sone people) now you say words don’t matter.
Which is it? |

Where's the line of repressive tolerance? It's a subjective issue, I find.
At what point is saying someone is no longer relevant or a dinosaur etc ageist or intolerant of beliefs, religious or cultural values? Protecting one group's rights can sometimes conflict with a others.
For me the essence of being woke is in our capacity to identify the oppressive aspects within ourselves, not just that which acts upon us, or others.
In that definition of woke, I believe it a positive endeavour individually and socially. |

Sorry but woke or being polictically correct doesn't mean being aware of social injustices like you lot like to believe. It actually means wanting to control what others say to suit ones narrative and thinking and its proven even down to films and tv shows you lot watch. |

Groups are not a monolith. Plenty of things relating to race bother me and others I know but people love to mention the fact that they know a Black person that isn’t bothered. Some people will be upset by things that don’t seem like a big deal and some won’t be bothered by things that probably are.
We are moving forward and we are becoming more considerate and mindful. And generally I think it’s a good thing. The key is to listen imo. And be open to the idea that the way we speak or act *might* cause offense. It isn’t hard or exhausting to be more mindful and considerate |

Took offence
Reported the thread and had it removed
So

Threads don't have to be reported to be removed, mods can make decisions themselves based on the content of the thread.
Unless of course people announced that they reported it.

I tend to find that people take offence less often when you don’t say tw***ish things.
“You can’t say anything nowadays” is normally only said by people who don’t see an issue with being offensive.

That's a question I've chewed on for a few years, seeing people using language in a way that makes no sense to me. As I say about people diverging into dialects. On the one side, there are people who absorbed the lessons about grammar in primary school. On the other hand, there are the people who think pronouns are big scary things that will take away the penis they most care about, or something. |

They don't actually know what it means and like to use it as an insult |

"Well your last two threads are hardly a bunch of laughs
Ok
So here’s the irony
All this woke talk came about because I started a thread about challenging wanks
For fun
I included myself
Lots found it funny
Then some flowerpot came along
Took offence
Reported the thread and had it removed
So
Why try and be funny ?
Wokey
So, because you didn’t see a problem making fun of people but other people didn’t think that was a nice thing to do, that is woke?
If I took a shit on your doorstep every morning, you probably wouldn’t like that. You’d be angry. Does that make YOU woke because you didn’t like the steaming pile of shit that I don’t have a problem with?
Silly sausage
Is this the height of your argument for your cause?
Silly bacon doesn’t sound right
Apologies to all the Muslims who may be offended by my pork references btw
Do you consider either an argument? I would have hoped for reasoning, not name calling. We are all adults here. I think.
Here’s the thing you don’t see because you are so desperate for an argument
1. My comment was meant to be humour
2. It shows I’m not at all fazed by you and your collective forum friends
3. I’m not biting
4. I’m smiling at you all "
Huh. Here was me thinking you were trying to justify your position.
If you think this is primary school, then have at it. I'm sorry for trying to find rhyme or reason in what you were saying, or assuming that there might be more behind it than the immature lashing out that is so apparent. |

I tend to find that people take offence less often when you don’t say tw***ish things.

As I say about people diverging into dialects. On the one side, there are people who absorbed the lessons about grammar in primary school. On the other hand, there are the people who think pronouns are big scary things that will take away the penis they most care about, or something."
The irony is on his next post he used the term "he" quite a few times, after publicly saying "he won't use pronouns" |

Just a general observation OP, no specific incidents. I remember the days you could call a lass a slag, slap her on the arse and tell her what wonderful knockers she had.
These days? Pah. Not on your nelly! It’s PC gone mad, I tell you! |

Depends what the definition is.
To piers morgan, it's woke because greggs do a vegan option. And he'll do a whole show about it.
You could flip that around and say to someone like him that he's woke about the monarchy. Even slight criticism and that guy loses his mind (what's left of it.) |

most people are retarded socially these days with the ability to even get into a health debate and consider looking at things from opposite perspectives and to try understand/ascertain some common ground .
even worse on an online website/social site s its all just meaningless , most people in real life would rarely react in the same way ..
I have met so many people over the years face to face/ in physical situations that are complete rude/nasty vile spitting online personas . yet to my face they clam up or just mumble and go off once I walk off from a group ... insects
online conversations are just mehhh if people won't engage in a calm unemotional invested position to start with .. |

There was a thing in brum recently where this guy who was well know died, and some guy posted 'jokes' about his dead.
The man's wife tracked him down and confronted him, funny he didn't make the same jokes in person when she brought them up to him |

"Woke - aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues.
Remind how that’s a bad thing again ? "
It isn't
It's when people start insisting that everyone ought to find the same things Important, or creating issues where none are. When small issues are over inflated or when it isn’t accepted that many people just don't care about said issues. It's the self richeous, vocal, naggy tone a great deal of people who are woke come across as having.
Be aware and attentive but please also don't bang on about it, few want to know and most find it irritating.

There's lots of things I find irritating.
I just ignore them, rather than compain that others shouldn't have the chance to say them or other people who may be interested hear them.
Fishing.
Cricket.
Hiking.
Golf.
The Daily Mail.
GB News.
All exist. I couldn't give a fuck about any of them. Others do though and that's fine.
It's not compulsory to agree with others, pay attention to them at all or let their views offend you.
We're all capable of deciding who to listen to and what to believe without getting offended, unless what's being said is actually offensive. |

That's not what "woke" originally meant. That's how right-wingers have hijacked the word. It means "anything I don't like" to them.
Maybe the self-righteous ones are those who think they ought to be allowed to say whatever they want without criticism? |

So people who are whining about immigration and how it'll ruin the country are woke? The self-righteousness about how flushing a bunch of money to send people to Rwanda rather than letting them drown? It's only an issue in the minds of some poor unfortunate souls who watch strange clickbait rage porn, given how much we actually need population growth and skills we don't have in huge amounts.
Or those bleating about the glory of England and/ or western civilisation, having clearly not cracked a history book since the last time Mrs Smith threatened to tell their parents they were being little shits? Does tend to be laden down with self-righteous whining about how their STI and GCSE is worth more than a brown person's PhD because of some wank fantasy about Rome that they probably can't spell, let alone understand.
If that were what woke meant - a nasty narcissistic snivelling stain on a society that is trying to get along in difficult times - then I'd have a problem with it.
Instead, it just seems to mean "we can't bash the (slurs) anymore and we can't send the (slurs) out to harvest the sugar and cotton, and we're going to wet ourselves over it." |
