Could you delete social media?

Jump to: Newest in thread

By *hagTonight OP   Man 34 weeks ago

From the land of haribos.

I have been hearing from few influencers of how they are thinking of deleting their social media or taking a break from it, like, facebook, instagram, taking a break from it for a week.

One said that, even when going to the bathroom they look at updates. I do the same, do you? In the car looking at utube videos, doing anything, scrolling social media.

I guess it would be hard for them and those who use it, because social media is their job. I think if it is ones job, it will be difficult to do, but a week off would be great, they mentioned as they could then do more things in the real world, like being more attentive to friends and family, not relaying on it as much as they think they do.

What is your screen time like? I dont use it so much. I guess it could be about 1hr or so a week, do you think that we utilize social media, like, do you think we are so addicted to our phones that it is so normal of like, what if I get more work done, what if I am more attentive to other things, what if I am more productive in general.

Do you also have utube videos playing when working in the background. do you get distracted a lot by doing it? I guess sometimes. I do. I usually just listen, maybe one gets more productive if turning it off. I dont know, it would be a good social experiment I think, to take a break from it. dont you think?

So many questions, could you do it, delete it or take a break from it? I think that I am too addicted to social media. I think I check social media apps too often, so going old turkey would be too hard, maybe a day or 2 without it as most I think.

In a word. No. I’m actually quite isolated where I am. Often I can go a few days without even seeing another person. Social media is often the only interactions I get.

Although I’m fully aware that social media is no substitute for real friendships and most on those platforms only care about clicks and follower numbers. Not real people.

I would love to be able to live without social media. But it’s nigh on impossible in our current society.

Other than Fab (which I regularly UNLOS from or take extended breaks) I’m only on Twatter, or Y or whatever it’s called now.

And that’s only really for the football chat / updates. Now the season is over I’ll hardly be on there until August tbh.

So yes, I can do without for long periods.

Not so much social media as I don't do it really beyond fab

But certainly devices. I have it in my hand and look at it way too much. It's a terrible habit and helps program the brain to more bad habits and less good ones.

I doom scroll tictok!

4hr, 5hr stints until the phone battery dies.

I know it's a stress thing and I am trying to deal with it. But I lapse every so often and it's hard.

Medical research in the late 90s suggested that the Internet was addictive and it is even more prevalent now with the pletherer of social media platorms.

Limiting screen time and personal welbeing is increasingly important to me.

If I can have phone time cut to around 4hrs per day. I'll be happy.

That's me goal currently!

I deleted everything for about a year.

I’m now exclusively on this (fab) interactions. If/when I break from this place, I just brows YouTube and that’s about it, but it’s not healthy for me, I don’t have a real network of friends who I can see easily or go out with that live nearby.

I’m a social person, I miss interacting with others.

Do I want to be online socialising? No. But I do it as it’s an alternative to not socialising at all right now.

I rarely look at Instagram now, I used to be heavily into tiktok, both making videos and watching and built up quite a number of followers but my views were low and hardly any interaction so I stopped doing them, only post on there once in a blue moon and where I used to lose so many hours scrolling, I probably spend less than an hour a day now if all the odd minutes were counted up.

Facebook I was very active during my holiday posting my pics so family and friends could see what we were up too and I am that person that uploads pictures of our cats.

I have definitely cut down my social media use in the past few months, which is strange as life has really taken a different turn for me lol x

No I'm ashamed to say. My daughter (mid 20s) has done it regularly since the age of 18 when on holiday. She and I went to Croatia a few years ago and she took a complete break for 2 weeks which is massive considering she has more friends and interests than you can shake a stick at. I considered trying to join her but didn't have the will power

I listen to lectures on youtube in the background whilst I'm doing other stuff.

I use whatsapp to send ideas back and forth with a group of other creative /musical types.

I avoid twitter & ticktock.

I was on facebook years ago. Don't have an account anymore. I was in a dreadlocks group there and i was getting about 100 friends requests a day. (I thought what the hell am I doing ..and left).

A recent rule I've made for myself is that I don't listen to podcasts anymore. Everyone is trying to get famous via them and I personally think the format isn't great for getting information. ( Video essays & lectures, yes).

So I use social media, kind of, but in a restricted/controlled manner..so I don't have to get rid of it completely.

I'm yet another one on here who uses Fab regularly and nothing else.

Main reason for never having investigating other well known sites is that they have such stupid sounding names!

Occasionally I've checked out a piece of music on you tube (another bloody stupid name) and, if there is no other alternative, looked up how to do something on there, but only as a last resort as most of the clips are excruciatingly badly created.. (ok today we are going to see how to.. with the camera wobbling all over the place..) Plus, you have to go through all the ad skipping and ' You might also like' stuff.

What I really can't understand is why so many normally sensible people I know spend hours watching clips of gluttons stuffing their face with food, and similar drivel.

As Roger Waters so prophetically sang 'This species has amused itself to death'. Watch that scenario unfolding right in front of us all...there can't be long to go.

I decided to delete all of my social media back in 2022, to be fair it was kind of hard to break out of the habit of having a mooch on my phone when waiting for something or standing around, took a while but now I don’t really think anything of it, I’m quite happy just living in the moment and not scrolling for hours

It does have its setbacks as in harder to keep in touch with friends or makes me hard to get a hold of but I think it was a good idea to do it

Yes the YouTube videos where they try food and react to it are probably the easiest content to create. Muckbangs I think they're called.

I think music ones are hard as you have have to play an instrument and then produce the music ..and edit the video.

I think video essays can take the longest though. There's a youtuber I watch that makes political video essays. Sometimes a video can take 3 years to make because of all the research and reading he said.

"Apart from Fab, I don’t have any.

This is me as well.

Same here, I found that when I left social media that at first I lost a few friends, and work got a little mistrustful of me, as they couldn't see what I was up to, but that soon pasted, and I had to go a really meet people face to face or ring for a chat.

I would never go back as I feel free now and have my own thoughts.

Was it hard to do? Break those habits? "

No not really, when WhatsApp was brought by Facebook they sent out new terms and conditions which I didn't agree with as I would of agreed to my data being sold, so I also left all the other platforms at the same time.

It was hard because people do not trust those who they cannot look up, and I found that employers use social media as a tool to check employees.

I am happy with my privacy, like the days before social media.

One advantage of eschewing social media is that I haven't picked up expressions like 'lol', 'meh' and 'FAF'.

I dont have social media as i dont like it.

Ive used it for other reasons then deleted it when i no longer needed it, but hardly used it.

i just played the games more until it got to stage add more friends to go higher on the levels so the games got deleted.

fabs is not social media its just a forum to message on and organise other things.

youtube isnt either, I use that for the music or albums ive found films on there as well.

but its a handy resource for finding stuff on how to do things or for repairs

I don’t really update FB…it’s kept so I can keep in touch with family and friends spread all over but I hardly use - could easily get rid.

Insta I don’t update at all now.

There is only sites like this - so could get rid of it all once we stop swinging.

I haven't deleted any of them, but I don't use them. I once had thousands of friends on FB, but I didn't know any of them. They were just useful for those stupid FB games. I talk to people on here more than I did on FB.

I already have and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made for my mental health and my ability to be productive. The only exception being here and one other similar site that I literally only use to keep track of events I might attend, but I’ve got really good at logging off for a few days if I feel myself needing a break again.

Best thing I ever did was get rid of Facebook. I have Instagram for silly videos, Snapchat with three people on it and Reddit for gaming and Warhammer stuff. I don't follow anyone specifically and don't have to see what people had for breakfast.

Gone and completely forgotten.

I find it's better not join in the first place. This is as close as I get to social media.

"Once I pack in work I could easily I only made a Facebook account a few years ago as was forced too by Facebook said my business page would be deleted unless I stopped logging in with my google account and made my own face book account so it exists only for that reason once I finish this line of work it’s gone "
Yes, you are right there, sometimes one is forced to create a facebook account, to do that too.

"I listen to lectures on youtube in the background whilst I'm doing other stuff.

So I use social media, kind of, but in a restricted/controlled manner..so I don't have to get rid of it completely."

That is good. l also use use utube to listen to lectures and others things too
