Done leasehold once. Got reasonably stung for it. Wouldn't touch with a long bargepole again. The problem nowadays is that most new builds are leasehold (houses or flats) and the ones labelled "affordable" and with any aid to buy, are also leasehold. It's very difficult for younger people who want to get on the property ladder to avoid the shabbiness of leasehold. |

It's terrible isn't it. I owned a leasehold property in the late 70s things weren't that had the. Mind you I paid £11,800 for a large three bedroomed maisonette in Brighton . I couldn't buy a beach hut down here for that now |

My first home was a leasehold maisonette. Lease was long enough for me to get a mortgage but two years later it was too short so selling it was a nightmare. Absentee landlord too.
Ended up selling it to a buy-to-letter who also bought the maisonette below and he ended up buying the freehold when the absentee landlord suddenly came back on the scene.

Had to renew my leasehold at the end of last year. I was lucky the cost was less than half what I expected, but it wiped out my savings. I'm glad I didn't have to add it to my mortgage renewal.
The building my flat sits in only had a 99 year lease, and most mortgage companies won't touch you unless there is more than 82 years on it.
My neighbours are all going through it now. |
