After 193 years this gentlemns club has decided to admit women after traditionally it has had male members only. Not Tom remembers when his old Working Men's Club was men only and the local Conservative club was men only until Margaret Thatcher arrived on scene. Surely in 2024 we should be able to have men only, women only or mixed. The women have the Womens Institute. Wokeness gone mad. What's going on here. It's all over the news

The reason is that there are far fewer gentleman left in this world, and what remaining gentlemanly behaviour one sees seems to stem from our 'female' counterparts, who exude gentlemanly behaviour as if it was intrinsically linked to their DNA.

They could teach us a thing or two, these modern women.

The future of the Garrick Club is secured by this long-overdue and magnanimous policy.

Will Not Tom posts include some facts for extra context?

I have no problem with men-only, women-only social clubs.

I’m not interested in being a member of such a club, but if men set up a club and want it to remain men-only, that’s fine with me. Likewise, women-only clubs.

I live in Henley in Thames, home to Henley royal regatta. It is also home to Henley women’s regatta, which runs a few weeks earlier … a large event for which crews travel from around the UK, Ireland, and many crews from the US. No men’s events, no boys events.

Somehow, it’s ok for a large event like that to exclude men/boys.

Excluding people from something on the grounds of gender, orientation, race or religion is abhorrent and shouldn’t be tolerated in the 21st century.

We live in 21st century

No more divide and man will conquer

Maggie never changed exist we do.

Pubs too were for working man but 1950s were man went to work woman stayed at home. Women were not allowed to work. Times were so different. Except I remember women going down mines and keeping factories going. Working the fields growing crops during the last few centuries. Men still get paid twice as much as men so yeah..equality.

What should happen with Henley women’s regatta then? Should it be abolished? Should they be forced to include men’s events?

“Men get paid twice as much as men” … I take it you meant women, but where did you get that statistic? I looked up the ONS stats, and the gender gap i saw was 7.7 percent.

Would you want to be a member of a club full of men who were happy to join a men-only club?

Not sure I would.

I was in one of the Pall Mall clubs (a friend was staying there, so we met for a drink), and one of the bars was men-only. We didn’t go there …

How is the boat race male-oriented? The women’s race is now on the came course, on the same day, on the same tv channels.

Interestingly, re football, women’s football is increasing in popularity and exposure because more women’s football is free-to-air than men’s.

Exactly this times 1000. It's the powerful and wealthy women thinking that they are missing out on become more wealthy and more powerful.

Considering people are really struggling to pay their engery bills and feed themselves, we could really do with less people like this in the world.

We should really be protesting at why places like this exist in the first place.

On what basis would you be protesting?

Let’s take the army and navy club, for example. Or the Oxford and Cambridge. What is wrong with these people clubbing together, buying, developing and maintaining a premises, and using it as their place to stay when in London, or to meet people from the same institution for meals, drinks etc, or use the gyms, pools etc?

I’m not a member of any of these clubs, but not sure why anyone would want to protest about them.

What outcome would you be asking for with your protest?

I’m not sure that financial concerns were to the fore in the case of the Garrick.

Was the place struggling financially?

I know some clubs are struggling, and the ones I know of aren’t men-only …. The Carnegie club, for example.

Others are absolutely thriving. Good luck trying to join the hurlingham, for example

No, I really don’t think the Garrick story is masking other events. It’s a squabble in a club that most of us have no interest in.

Glad I’ll be able to use my local swimming pool any time I like now! They’ll obvs be banning all the women only swimming and aqua fat sessions!

I honestly never understood that, as if blokes could never want a man only lane swimming away from jabbering women who insist on standing in the middle of the lane chatting or WALKING up the lane instead of swimming! But oh no, men can just fit in the 10% of the remaining classes after women, pensioners, kids etc, and they can pay the same price for membership…

One day we’ll see true equality and men will be able to have their own “safe spaces” to do their manly stuff in peace , or at least pay for what they use!

I’m not “bugged out” by hwr. I will be attending, as it happens. But it is quite odd that they set up as a reaction to a men-only event and are now doing the exact same thing themselves despite HRR moving with the times

Personally, why not leave it as is, unless the main regatta wants to assimilate?? I'll never understand people getting so bugged out by others doing something off their own back when they've been excluded elsewhere...

So you’re ok with women-only regattas then. That’s fine. Thanks

I’m not “bugged out” by hwr. I will be attending, as it happens. But it is quite odd that they set up as a reaction to a men-only event and are now doing the exact same thing themselves despite HRR moving with the times "

I didn't say YOU were bugged out - my point is, that if people are excluded from events, institutions etc., there comes a time when they'll find a way to enjoy the same experiences for themselves, and it's a tad hypocritical for those that excluded them (in this case, for over a century!!) to complain that they themselves have been "excluded"?? The others just found another way. And that's "odd" to you?

But whatever.

Like the Shed clubs I see only for men

What’s your thoughts on Henley women’s regatta? Ok to exclude men?

Henley Regatta started in 1839, the first Henley women's regatta in 1988...take a wild guess as to why it was started?? Let me help you out, it was because women were not allowed events at the original one...that is, they were EXCLUDED...

Please also see the MOBOs and other examples...

Quite rightly, HRR now has lots of women’s and girls events. So the outlier is HWR.

What do you think should happen with HWR? Disband? Force them to put on men’s events? Or leave it as is, ok to have a women-only event?

Hi. Who is complaining/ hypocritical about being excluded?

I pointed out the anomaly, that’s all.

Hwr now fulfils a need that no longer exists, a solution without a problem . Strange situation.
