I have an electrician coming today and I'm dreading it.
I hate when people come to do stuff at my house, I don't hate him, I'm grateful he's coming,it's me!
I never know what to do.
Do I talk to him?
Go away and leave him alone?
Make him tea?
I'm horrendously awkward in these situations!
Tradespeople on here, what's the strangest things people do?

"Make him tea, go away. Make sure there's only one towel in the bathroom in case he gets through a few.
Meli, I'm thoroughly disappointed!
I expected it from Willy but not you
I was tempted "
I couldn't resist the temptation at all. You're a better man than I, Willy. |

Just offer a drink, a biscuit if you have it and they want it. If is a simple job leave them to it. If concerned that they do exactly as you want, keep a discreet eye and intervene if needed a d before is too late. You will be fine |

Don’t listen to all the boring advice above OP - they are just trying to distract you.
Definitely offer him a cuppa and make sure you have a little twinkle in your eyes when you ask him how he likes it.
When you give it to him make sure you bend right over in front of him with whilst wearing a very short skirt on and a tiny little thong. It is guaranteed to make sure his work standards are to the highest quality.
Tell him that if he needs you you will be in the bedroom fluffing the pillows. |

Be courteous and offer him/her a drink of their choice (tea/coffee). Run through issue(s) to make sure they're aware of problem(s) in need of fixing. Listen to what they have to say and if all's well simply let them get on with their job.
Then you can go and try on all your sexy outfits and watch porn on full volume to make sure they're not distracted in any way. |

I start looking around for random things to do, staring out the window, generally just looking a bit shifty in my own house.
I find it so uncomfortable, so I have no advice |

Think it depends on where they are in the house. On arrival I always ask if they would like a drink and then leave them to it provided I know where they are. If they are upstairs for example then I will situated myself in the office. This allows me to keep an eye on them without actually standing over them. It also avoids the awkward chit chat that I would have to do it I stood over them. |

You're assuming the tradespeople is a man.
Just saying. |

I'm not actually. I mentioned him as I've spoken to him personally on the phone twice.
I also mentioned tradespeople (inclusive) in the OP when directing the question to others. |

All of the above. It's your house be you, offer a drink, then basically do you what you want, if you trust him leave him to it, if not keep an eye on him, your house, your rules. Be calm and level headed. |

Oh yes, this is awful.
I will offer tea and scarper. Worst still if they ask me something I'm supposed to know the answer to but don't - like where the stopcock is. Huh?
See also: taking the car to the garage. My only objective is whether it moves or not. Please don't expect me to know anything about its engine.
I fail almost all "but you're a man?" questions.

"Good news is he's been and gone.
Bad news is my toddler called him Dad, twice
Did you say "no darling, he's an electrician, not the milkman"?
No
I did however go tomato red and apologise "
Haha, that's too cute.
Just a word from the other side, sometimes it can be very awkward for the tradesperson too. We can be just as shy. Sometimes on the initial hi's and hello's I like to offer the client a cup of tea and reverse the roles, occasionally helps relax the mood.
Much better than that one time approach that I'll never use again. "Hello, this is weird, isnt it? I'm awkward, your awkward. Let's just fix this thing and we can go back to normality."
Made it worse somehow ?
(Never really happened ) |

Anyone leaving multiple towels out for an electrician is just asking for it "
Unless he leaks |

I ask if it’s going to be a ‘big job’ first before I offer a brew. They’ll have some idea how long it will be anything over 15 minutes and I’ll offer to make them a drink.
9 times out of 10 I’ll be working anyway so leave them to it. |

You need to go and watch some porn for the correct etiquette when a builder is in your house in particular a plumber working under the sink whilst you intentionally stand above him
