Junk food is addictive and makes you fat
Jump to: Newest in thread
80% of my diet used to be junk food. Since October, I've almost completely cut it out. If I want a quick meal, I'll cook some salmon and broccoli. Which takes about the same time as a frozen pizza.
Personally, I found it far easier to quit smoking and if I hadn't had a couple of health scares last year, I'd still be eating lots of takeaways and carrying a big gut. Now if I have a takeaway, I only have a small portion because it makes me feel sick to over eat all that saturated fat and carbohydrates
Does anyone think processed food is designed and marketed in a way to make you addicted or was I just a greedy sod?

PS if it wasn't for some health scares middle of last year. I think I'd still be living the same life style now. |

It might be addictive but junk food alone does not make you fat, calories do.
Many people have documented losing a lot of weight eating only McDonald's, one guy did it eating twinkies only. Not good for your health or body composition but proves the point. |

"There have been multiple television programmes explaining the addictive qualities of ultra processed foods."
I hadn't actually paid attention to them because I wasn't interested. I only became interested because I was having issues with my balance and getting heart palpitations. I don't know if it was related to my diet or just a virus. But it scared me as lasted a couple of months.
I have listened to a few podcasts on fasting and reducing carbohydrates while I needed to lose some weight. |

Sounds like you’ve figured it out OP there’s a mental health thing there too, taking an easy option, you know it’s not great for you but you do it sort of thing.
Been there and did that at times and then saw mirror thinking WTF.
Hope you get there. |

Oil and Sugar are cheap.
They are used to produce very cheap meals
Sugar is more addictive than coc aine.
Manufacturers know this but don't do anything to stop the levels of sugar but then ....... they don't force anyone to buy and eat their nutritionally crap foods

"You can of course retrain your taste buds though. For years I had sugar in coffee. I couldn't stand to have it in now. "
Yeah I actually can't stand it but used to have 2 sugars. Im still addicted to coffee. That's my main vice these days. |

Yeah I think them kind of foods give you instant satisfaction so it makes you feel better when you're gorging. I still cant have multi packs of crisps or biscuits in the house as I'd probably eat them in one sitting. |

It's all thermodynamics, if calories in is less than what is burned weigh will drop off. But quality nutrients will keep your brain and body working like a well oiled machine.
Junk food is designed to fuck you up and sugar is hella addictive |

Yeah we aren't forced too. I think it's interesting though how cigarettes have to have a health warning and aren't allowed to have appealing packaging. But we have had an explosion of type 2 diabetes but there are no health warnings on them. |

That didn't start till 2007 though, and there is now the sugar tax. You get the clear labels on food to make it easier to identify at a glance what's supposedly healthier. But realistically what would they put on what? And how would you decide what's 'bad'? You can still get obese on 'healthy foods'. |

I agree. But when I'm eating junk I used to find it hard to stop so by not having it on my shopping list meant I would eat less and stop wanting to gorge after a few weeks went by. I can't seem to do moderation for long periods. So having a calorie deficit on McDonalds wouldn't work for me as I'd have talked myself into adding the Mozeralla dippers and apple pies just before I confirmed my order. |

It is mandatory for meals to have nutritional contents on the back of every packet, many have traffic light style indicators of fat and salt etc clearly on the front. The information is there, we have to accept some responsibility for picking up foods from shops and eating them, not throwing the blame on someone else for what we choose to consume. |

You could put pictures of a diseased heart :p. I don't think many people who are very overweight do it on health foods unless they have a medical condition or are really unlucky with their genetics. 100g of broccoli has way less calories than 100g of bread. |

Up till the COVID lockdown 99% of my meals were taken away because of my job, it literally was 24/7, lockdown came and I started to eat proper meals cooked fresh, now it's maybe twice a month that I get a takeaway |

"I don't think you could start putting the same kind of pictures on a packet of chocolate buttons, as you get on a packet of cigarettes.
I think parents may have something to say about that "
I think they'd be a risk it could give someone an eating disorder or make it worse too. |

Did you find it hard to change it back and do you feel better for it? You probably needed some extra calories if you worked longer hours through COVID. |

We were lucky to grow up in a time when junk food just wasn't available, fizzy drinks were just for Christmas and birthdays and takeaways were cheeses sandwiches in brown paper .
I think too much of any food makes you fat (barring those with medical issues) but the ease with which high calorie, low nutrition food can be delivered to your door doesn't help |

It’s also about portion size even with healthy foods. Eating too many calories will have a negative impact on your weight.
You don’t have to give up junk food (Though it helps) just reduce the amount you eat and take up regular exercise to burn of the calories that you do consume. |

I think also the problem with todays society is laziness
With takeaways and ready meals etc
My house we have 3 meals a day, homemade/cooked. Rarely eat out or even have McDonald's. We eat at the table too
I'm naturally slim, (lucky me), I enjoy eating healthy but also enjoy cakes and biscuits.
Things in moderation and just bring sensible about diet and exercise.

Moderation is so important with everything though. Am I going to eat well during the week to supplement my workouts? Absolutely! Am I also going to nail a tub of B&Js, a packet of Drumstick Squashies, and half a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts over the weekend? Also yes |

"After I've done a longer run like 6+miles I'm starving when I get home I have like turkey dinos waffles and spag hoops haha
But yes being sensible and eating in moderation definitely "
Sometimes that comfort food is needed though. As long as it's not for 3 meals a day, every day you should be golden |

Diet is important
Fruit..full of sugar
Or added nutra sweet
Veg..greens are great
Lots of food contains starch which sugars, salt content, added flavours even chicken been injected with water to plump it out.
Still..little bit is not harmful unless you have health issues
Sex is a good diet op..actually burns calories |

My diet was shocking. It’s getting better since I got diagnosed with gallstones. Having to keep off the fatty foods to stave off having an attack. But I seem to have lost about 13 kg in about 2 months |

Yes. I think it is designed in that way with all the added things in it, one can still have it in a diet, but in moderation. I dont have it so much, as I rather spend my calories on low calorie options |

I personally think it is easier to cook fresh like OP says rather than eat pre processed. Living on my own I basically have a few different meals that I cook - nothing fancy or special but it means I can always have good ingredients in the house and not have anything that might “tempt” me to be “naughty”. |

I wonder if you're naturally slim or if you just naturally eat mainly proper meals so you have calories spare for a few snacks. |

Advertising, brand protection and 10yr business plans are at the base of any of our decisions. There's many.. 'beans means heinz', 'it has to be Hellmanns mayonnaise', that whistle on the Mcdonalds add has been around for a decade, Amazons smile packaging, 'ahhh bisto'. I think it was Birdseye that said you aim advertising at family and you have generational buying.
It's easier to buy food you eat on a regular basis, but when there is conditioning it's understandable how it is then harder to break habits. I'm at least glad I've switched to shopping at Aldi |

Nope. Can eat what I like and I just stay the same. Whether it's when I'm more active or not.
Never watched my diet or calorie counted or anything.
My whole family's the same - can eat a lot and not fo exercise and just stay the same |
