Buying one Shoe

A paralympian athlete with one leg has commented on Nike, named after the Greek God of Victory. Nike uses so called, all inclusive mannequins, which sometimes have one leg and a blade, made famous by Osar Pistorious, the South African murderer. Now that is a great all inclusive idea until the said Paralympian asks to buy one training shoe. No way, Nien, Na! Then the cheeky buggers offered a 15% discount. Not 50% but 15%.

What is going on here guys. It's all over the news

Well Tom its absolutely frigging ridiculous to expect a production proccess the likes of which Nike will be operating to start sending out an odd shoe occasionally.

Nike One Shoe Bank Program. Nike has a small inventory of single shoes at their distribution center in Memphis, TN. Amputees requiring only one shoe may call Nike and relay their size and type of shoe (running shoe, tennis shoe, etc.) that they need.

As it costs them about 60p to make the shoes it’s mildly stupid to not offer to cater for those missing a leg through an online store

If said paralympian fancied four pickled onions do you think the manufacturer would make him a jar of four? No. Quantities of goods are set by the manufacturer, not random customers so he can suck it up like he does with everything else.

Reminds me of the Monty python sketch, a whole bunch of one legged men in rain coats making off with the single shoe displays outside a shoe shop

The issue isn't really that they won't sell one shoe. It's that they're using people with limb differences prominently in their advertising, but don't actually offer a suitable service for them. Their "inclusivity" is performative.

They do offer a suitable service, they supply two shoes, this caters for both those with a left foot or a right foot aswell as those with both.

It's sickening that that they will promote a false narrative, including displays and giving free single shoes to high profile athletes. It's a known fact that some people, a minority, only need 1 shoe but they haven't tailored their systems reasonably, to be able to provide the full show needs of such disadvantaged people. It may be a little more understandable for a tiny organisation but certainly not for a global giant, particularly when they are alluding to catering to these people.

He is a She.

If you read the article, she comments that their advertising uses one legged models or mannequins, but their service doesn’t go that far.

I agree with her. If you’re going to portray yourself as inclusive of amputees, then go the extra mile. She specifically says that her contact lenses are bought individually, so why not her shoes?

The shoes aren’t actually made in pairs are they? The machine for the left shoe is different from the right shoe machine.

Shoes, boots slippers, etc are all sold in pairs, get over it.

Lots of times I have required only one boot, because I have damaged and holed one, I still have to buy a pair, no different.

But why? Would it cost big companies to sell them in singles? It wouldn’t have to be half the cost of a pair.

Of course I know it’s the current way of doing things, but what are the reasons it can’t change? Don’t worry, I’m sure the buy as a pair option will continue to exist.

Most people who are amputees are very unlikely to be wearing, or using a running blade outside of competive sports though, and the number of those people who compete are very small. So, when they're wearing a prosthetic leg, they'll still require two shoes anyway.

Quick Google states anywhere between £1,300 - £20,000 for a running blade. I don't think trainers being sold in pairs is the cost limiting factor for amputees wishing to compete in sports to be fair.

What about amputees who can't wear prosthetics and instead use a wheelchair? Most people who experience traumatic amputations have less-than-ideal stumps and either can only wear prosthetics for short periods; cannot wear them at all, or it varies depending on things like stump breakdown and infection.

Being disabled is extremely expensive. People will probably be surprised to know that the NHS only supplies one "basic" prosthetic limb. It does not supply technical or specialised limbs. Quite a number of amputees cannot walk at all with the basic limbs, which lack any hinging at the ankle and/or knee (depending on height of amputation). They therefore either have to get a wheelchair (these are also heavily rationed by the NHS and are incredibly expensive to buy) or might have to buy a more technical limb at their own expense, which will be many thousands of pounds.

Nike would do well from the PR perspective to be more accommodating or cease using amputees as inspiration porn in their stores/ads.

To be clear, lots of amputees want to buy one shoe. I know several and they are all fed up of storing one random shoe in a cupboard, never to be used. To pair up with an opposite limb amputee to share a pair of shoes, requires you to find an opposite side amputee with whom you share a shoe size and taste in footwear. This is much more rare than you think.

Perhaps Nike and others could consider a "slight seconds" one shoe purchase scheme from all those wasted/discarded pairs of shoes, where perhaps one of a pair has been returned to a store marked/damaged or from shoes from "last season" that didn't get sold. Footwear brands waste tons and tons of shoes every year in these ways.

Why doesn’t he just nick it off the shelf, if it’s his right foot he still owns then he’ll never have to pay for footwear again.

Will they start selling people two different size shoes if people’s feet are half or one size different?

"Will they start selling people two different size shoes if people’s feet are half or one size different?"

There is probably a business opportunity that bulk buys shoes and then allows you to specify the size for each foot - you would imagine there are as many people with a bigger right foot as there are a bigger left foot and that will even out across the stock.
