Non Swimming Sailors

Reports that sailors can join the Royal Navy, dubbed the Senior Servce, without being able to swim. Is this because there are so few ships, the chances of a sailor going to sea are miniscule. What's going on here guys. It's all over the news

I dunno much about the Navy but I'll have a guess that by the time it gets to the need to swim you're in a fair bit of trouble.

Traditionally, sailors didn't learn to swim in order to save themselves from a lingering death in the water.

Used to be all over the news...

Absolutely correct F.

When I did my basic sea survival we had to swim but it was changed to reflect the proliferation of personal flotation aids required by many operators of working on deck.

Guess it depends on your role.

A few marines I knew weren't strong swimmers but you don't have to be a swimmer to make it through the 'Sheep Dip' (IYKYK).
