I'd hazard a guess a suggest it is to do with increases in natural gas prices, driven by EU sanctions on Russian gas.
Spain has no indigenous gas supply. It has traditionally uses coal with some nuclear. As a result of EU policy to phase out coal, Spain is reliant upon imported energy.
In addition, Natural Gas is the source for nitrogen fertilisers. As such fertiliser prices have also rocketed.
Add to that a currency (euro) over which the Spanish government has no control, and you have the conditions for economic hardship |
