or is it?

Went out for lunch today and we ordered off the menu. The meals were 'beer battered cod, chunky chips and mushy peas' and the other meal ordered was 'homecooked ham, chunky chips and an egg'

simple enough... it turned out to be smoked ham which my grandma didn't like so left.. and my mushy peas were in fact minted.

Im just wondering was it a case of the menu should have been more specific or was it fine the way it was written?

Were the peas mushy though? If not I would have complained as it's not as described.

Ham is a bit more ambiguous though I would have expected it to say smoked if it was

yes the peas were mushy and i actually enjoyed them, but felt the menu should have stated they were minted.

for the record im not miffed, just asking other people's _iews on if the menu was acceptable being so basic or if it could have elaborated more.

Ham is ambiguouis enough a term that I would have thought checking in advance was the obvious thing to do if you don't like smoked?

Did you complain to the restaurent?

I would have presumed that if a place was going to serve smoked ham the menu would have stated smoked ham.

Nah didnt complain, the rest of the food was beautifully cooked.

It was just my opinion the menu should have been perhaps a tad more specific with the descriptions.

I would have gone mental, smashed the place up, thrown the food over the bar, thrown the drinks at the table next to mee, not paid the bill, done a runner and never gone back again, ever, ever, ever.

Or more probably just sat there and ate it and never said a word.

The issue of description is not easy, was it home cured ham? If yes then it is as described. If there are possibilities that it may be smoked and that isn't what one wants then the onus is on the buyer to ask if the product has other features they may not like....

I wouldn't have been amused that they had given me smoked ham or minted peas as I like neither.

I think they should have the right description on the menu otherwise you don't know what you are buying.

It also wouldn't matter if I was having a nice day out, I would have sent it back and asked for something else.

I don't think the customer should be the one to query everything on the menu. You'd be there all day asking questions. It doesn't take a second to add a few extra words to a menu.

I ordered a steak and ale pie once and it came with mushrooms in it. Bleurgh. Would never of ordered it if I'd known.

It's difficult to know what to do for the best because I'm always convinced they're gonna do nasty stuff to my good if I complain! Lol x

Exactly!! They'd soon be complaining if every customer asked them 20 questions about every meal which they may well not know the answers to and be running back and forth to the kitchen x

I think you are really missing the point.

If I am ordering something on a menu I expect it to tell me what it is. If it is mushy peas with mint then it should say muchy peas with mint.

From what I can see you are saying we can order food on a menu and hope we get what is on the menu.

the fact it just said 'ham' to me would have just implied a standard to frills ham.

I agree with this. If it something that changed the taste of the entire dish then it should be stated on the menu. Like if the gammon has been cooked in honey and mustard. Or the sausages are some fancy flavour it shouldn't just say sausages. X

no need for the FFS really is there? who needs to grow up?

they didnt know the meal wasnt going to be to their liking before they got it. They dd the adult thing and didnt let it ruin their day.

i think as they are very strong tatses and changes to the advertised menu then yes, they should have been mentioned. maybe just send them an 'incidentally' type email, not complaining or demanding a refund etc as it really didnt impact on your day but ust say that you think it would be nice f their customers were availed of the facts so they can make informed choices.

They haven't provided what you asked for though have they? If you ordered a meal and they poured mint sauce all over it would that be acceptable? Or would it be ok because you didn't bother to ask if they were going to pour it over so you should just put up with it?

If it was smoked ham it should have stated it. If they were minted mushy peas it should have been stated it. This isn't a case of listing the ingredients, it is purely providing an adequate description of the dish.

"Should have been clearer and I would have complained

Why complain? Just as if they can provide what you want?

They haven't provided what you asked for though have they? If you ordered a meal and they poured mint sauce all over it would that be acceptable? Or would it be ok because you didn't bother to ask if they were going to pour it over so you should just put up with it? "

listen right...just put up and shut up will you!! that chef has slaved long and ard to make that dinner that you are paying for with your hard earned money. what right do you think you have making any comment on the fact that the ham eas smoked which you werent made aware of and the peas have mint which again you werent made aware of. who give a shit that you dont like smoked meats and minted peas and so would have chosen another dish if you ad known, just shove it down your pie hole and be grateful!!!

By which point everyone else has git there meal and your still waiting to eat yours when they've finished all because of adding a few extra words on a menu which might be a bit of extra effort in the beginning but would save the restaurant time/money/food etc in the long run x

As u said earlier, I don't like cucumber but assume a sad will come with it. The onus is on me to inform them I'd rather not have it... If I fail to tell them I have two choices. Either put up with it or ask nicely if they could change it for me. Simple.

"Were the peas mushy though? If not I would have complained as it's not as described.

Ham is a bit more ambiguous though I would have expected it to say smoked if it was

Scarlett

Minted as in loaded as in loads of money

yes the peas were mushy and i actually enjoyed them, but felt the menu should have stated they were minted.

for the record im not miffed, just asking other people's _iews on if the menu was acceptable being so basic or if it could have elaborated more. "

When I go out to have a meal, I would like an element of surprise.

Quite happy to sit in a restaurant and get fed with whatever the chef decides to make using produce that are in season.

However, when making a purchase or paying for a service, I'd like to have as much information as possible in advance.

"or is it?

Went out for lunch today and we ordered off the menu. The meals were 'beer battered cod, chunky chips and mushy peas' and the other meal ordered was 'homecooked ham, chunky chips and an egg'

simple enough... it turned out to be smoked ham which my grandma didn't like so left.. and my mushy peas were in fact minted.

Im just wondering was it a case of the menu should have been more specific or was it fine the way it was written? "

was that minted as in Loaded as in loads if money

Wasn't dartbridge inn was it as I went there and it was dire?

nah was the Avon Inn at Avonwick. I keep saying i will stop off at the Dartbridge Inn as it looks so pretty. Pass it when we go to Pennywell farm or Buckfast Abbey"

It was always really nice in there but must have changed hands as yesterday it was crap and yes I complained and got a free pudding

I think it should have stated smoked for the ham and minted for the peas.

Also I don't really think it is complaining if you tell the waiter something like "I wasn't expecting the ham to be smoked may I order an alternative "

I a pretty sure it is illegal what they are doing. I am almost certain they should legally be describing things better. For example what if you are allergic to mint? You wouldn't know until your first mouthful of mushy peas they had mint in.

to be fair i think the flecks of dark green within the mushiness showed something was added to it..

But those green flecks could have been another green herb and not mint. If somebody does go there who is allergic to mind they could successfully sue as they were not told mint was in the peas.
