How do you do this?

Say it's a group of people you hang out with occasionally, or even just one person and you just dont enjoy their company anymore.

Or you realise some of the things they say and do you don't like...

Do you talk to them about it? How has it gone?

It's not a dilemma many on here worry about... They just block you. That's ok too as it was ever meant to be, but it does smart a little but only for a while.

I ended an 18 year friendship last summer. I had spoken to them a number of times in the past about their behaviour and lack of respecting boundaries but they continue to make the same mistakes again and again. My breaking point came and that was it. I told them that I’m no longer accepting them for who they are and that it’s best if both of us go our separate ways.

The friendship group I have involves this person and they’re also aware of this person’s behaviour so they do understand why I decided to do what I did. You can make it work, you stay in contact with them and still socialise when you want. Just be aware that you will experience being left out from time to time.

The only regret I have is that I should have done it years ago.

I would just let it fade away, there’s nothing to say / do it’s natural

If it was a close friend I’d want to try and fix it though , so I’d find the tight time and space for a slightly difficult conversation - what’s gone wrong ? This is how I feel? How do you feel? How do we fix this ?

I realised last year after losing my mum that I had to cut contact with her family it was the best thing I have ever done and I am a much happier person inside and out.

You have to do what’s best for regardless of what people think of you

Might need a bit more background. This isn’t a “one size fits all” topic.

If the desire to end the relationship is driven by one specific incident or piece of behaviour, then talk about that, see if you can resolve it perhaps?

If it’s just time to move on from certain friends, with no specific trigger, then just do it, start doing other things. No massive need to give them a red card.

Someone I'd known for a long time ended our friendship by literally stopping contact. She was going through a hard time, I reached out several times but after a while with no response I understood that she no longer wanted to be my friend. It does make you doubt if the friendship was ever real on their side if they don't give a reason but I can't say with any certainty that I wouldn't do the same
