The tale of jacket potato.
Jump to: Newest in thread
As a non British person I find the concept of jacket potato utterly bizarre, but fascinating.
Never cooked nor eaten one before but now my youngest seems to be a fan.
Talk me through your best jacket potato recipes and preparation techniques so I can rise to the challenge.
Thanks

NORWAY Wherever I lay my hat |
You can't beat a good baked potato with crispy skin and fluffy inside.
Rub with a bit of oil and sling in the oven. I'm a simple gal who likes it with lashings of butter and cheese. I'm craving one now |

It can’t be THAT easy!
Do you need a specific type of potato or anything will do? |

You can buy large baking potatoes in the supermarket.
I wash them, prick them with a fork all over, wrap in foil and put them in the oven on a low heat for a few hours.
Then serve with the filling of your choice.

"For something a bit different, fill it with chilli con carne, and slices of avocado then cheese till it melts and crumble some Doritos over it for crunchy texture"
Now that is something I can eat for days! Thank you for sharing |

I didn’t know that! I will be definitely looking for them today as I’m about to go out for a little grocery shopping. Thank you Boo |

For speed
I go with oven on 200 fan, as that is heating up 6 to 10 minutes in the microwave turning after 4 minutes utill it's soft to the touch / squeeze " mind it will be hot"
Oven is now hot 15 minutes till crispy.
Cut in half mash with the back of a fork with butter. Add what you like.
Beans as cheese is my go to with lots of fresh ground black pepper. |

"When you read "prick with a fork", why do you immediately think of Jamie Oliver?"
Makes a change from me calling him prick that ruined soft drinks.
On baked potato’s not that bothered about them, although I do love the M&S frozen bag of small jersey royal potatoes for roasting absolutely gorgeous |

"Microwave for about 4 mins a side, open up the spud then stick em in the air fryer, they come out crispy like oven ones but quicker
How long in the air fryer. Guess you would not mash first "
Just smash em a bit, trial and error with air fryer mines only 200 degrees max, about 7 mins |

butter, cheese & chilli
butter, chicken curry
I’m the only one in the house that eats them so often cheat & buy the frozen ones

The cooking has been covered.
I love jacket potatoes so much.
I think my favourite filling is tuna mayo, cucumber, chives, cheese and coleslaw on the side.
I do like a creamy chicken tikka on them now and then, but only a small portion.

Old way ...... buy the right potato , prick it and put it in the oven for TWO HOURS. Crispy and earthy.
More Modern - prick the skin and microwave 3 mins. Stand 2 mins turn and micro 3 mins. Quick and Steamy.
BEST WAY EVER
prick skin a few times. Put in microwave for 2 mins. Turn and wait a minute. Micro for 2 mins more.
take out of micro and cover in butter and a salt sprinkle or olive oil and a salt sprinkle.
put in air fryer for 3 mins on 200 turn and 3 mins more.
Brown and crispy and earthy and delicious ....... |

I part-cook mine in the microwave first to speed up the process a bit. Microwave for about 8-10mins, rub in olive oil and sea salt and then put them directly on the rack in the oven for about 30-40mins. I always add a little butter and mash the flesh up a bit and then serve with tuna, sweetcorn and spring onion mayonnaise, with black pepper and some grated cheese. |

I popped to Morrisons last night and they had half price cooked chickens . I had some with a baked spud and lots of salad .. simple and delicious. I hoped the salad might offset the half pound of butter on the potato! |

"Always make sure you prick them all over with a fork before cooking, I forgot this step once and 2 potatoes explode in the oven, not a fun thing to clean up. "
I forgot this in my instructions above!
It’s easily done. Don’t forget to pepper them in vents! |

Or if you are really lazy…
Do the jacket as per above
Get the sauce from the curry you have had the night before
Pour “sauce” over potato…
Warming up the sauce is optional!!! |

"Go to Iceland or another frozen food retailer. Buy a box of McCain jacket potatoes. Microwave. Add filling of choice .
"
I’m glad I’m not the only one who does this.
I keep a box in the freezer for when I finish work very late and want a jacket spud , eight minutes or so and two lovely crispy skinned spuds. |

Frozen stuff is probably more expensive than a bag of potatoes, the fresh stuff tastes better too |

It works out cheaper once you take the cooking element out of it.
I was being tongue in cheek though. |

Make up a smorgasbord of a few different toppings and let him try different ones, if it’s butter it has to be real butter, chilli takes some beating as a topping, grated cheese, I’ve mixed a fish finger in, baked beans |

Just to report a few of potatoes baking variety type is now in the oven, prepared according to your instructions.
I don’t have microwave or air fryer so oven it is. We are on very tight budget so it will be butter and cheese for the first time but I must admit your recipes are mouthwatering!
Thank you |

Score round the middle with a knife, stab it a few times, microwave for 5-8 minutes depending on size and then finish in the air fryer
I usually split, mash the butter in, then top with tuna, veg and cheese.
I used to put left over sweet and sour on them too. |

Nah, the McCain ones taste the best. And it doesn't matter how long you leave them in the freezer for. |

If the skin is crisp try scooping out the potato into a separate bowl then it’s easier to add butter and mash it up then put it back into the skin and grate cheese on top.
Other way is to cut an X into the top then when you squeeze the sides it opens up |

The frozen one are 97 pence each approximately and the individual baking potatoes in the supermarket last night were 32 pence each, add to each the cost of cooking and you will have your answer.
The point is though, I don’t buy the frozen ones because I think they are cheaper, I buy them for when I need a baked potato in a hurry. |

Exactly. It's convenience you're paying for. Putting your oven on to cook one jacket potato is folly though. |

That's all I needed to know.
None of that 2 hours in the oven stuff. too much electricity wasted for a simple meal for a single person.
Could exist without an oven or cooker but couldn't without a microwave.
Been offered an air fryer but not over keen on even minimal oil usage.. |
