Photoshopping the disabled away

From the BBC website:
“ A council has apologised after parents were offered a choice of class photos with or without children with complex needs in them.
Parents at Aboyne Primary complained after being sent a link from a photography company offering them alternative pictures.”
The school were not involved in the decision to offer pictures without disabled children in them, it was the photography company.
What say you, good people of the fora, is it acceptable to do this, do you get frustrated with disabled people being in photos, or do you think it’s unacceptable to delete the disabled? |

Personally I think it is incredibly inappropriate for the photographers to make this type of decision, but also rather bizarre that it would cross their mind.
I do wonder if a parent had asked for the children in question to be removed for their pictures, and the company just offered the same option to others.
Either way, I think it's sick

A mother with twins in different classes says the photo offered of her able bodied daughter's class only had one picture available to purchase, yet the class photo of her wheelchair user daughter had two versions, one with her daughter deleted. |

"One mother says she now wonders how many parents ordered the version with her daughter removed. "
I think that’s the point. A lot of talk about inclusion and maybe the kids understand it at school but don’t hear it at home.
Far as I understand all orders cancelled.
Tempest have did my kids schools and presumably they organise, do the online and payments and a local
Photographer does the work as and when, but their reputation will take an absolute battering and deservedly

"What about hidden disabilities? Seems like we as a society have a lot to learn and this honestly this makes me sick to my stomach."
Ahh it's ok as long as you look normal, or close enough.
The level of "you dont look disabled" ignorance is large.

We all know what the answer is. But we live in a world where the eradication and exclusion of people is normal, accepted and practiced.
It's true we see more disabled and differently abled people on TV, screen and stage but there is still the beauty bias that applies.
When faced with real people I think people still try to hide away people with disabilities.
It's like the workplace. They think they are being inclusive by accepting someone with a walking aid but don't realise the whole of IT and systems has been run by Neuro spicies for decades and the women in credit control are battling Fibro and CFS and are very direct and assertive because they have to fight to survive daily through their disabilities.
We have a culture of ignoring or hiding us away. |

This unfortunately has been a common occurrence since my my daughter was born. It needs to be added, the largest part of it was by so called “professionals”.
(It needs to be also added there are some absolutely amazing professionals out there for the counterbalance.) |

That’s another whole issue with public knowledge and whether it’s meant as a kindness or not, it’s very much out there. |

What's the story behind this I wonder
I don't hope the photography company gets closed down because people will lose livelihoods but 'on the face of it' some retraining needs to happen at the very least accompanied by a very public apology. |

Depends on what went out on order sheets and to what stage school stepped in to stop it
I think tempest use their resource on web for orders and the photographer is a local freelancer so maybe as company name known and photographers isn’t, it’s slightly unfair. |

The photographer's explanation to the school was "some children take time to get focussed""
For real though |

Well that's quite true if any group of young kids. I don't think it's a reason to Photoshop them out of photos |

That may well be, but surely that means they can add a child to a photo if they were blurry not remove them. |

Today I've also read about a wheelchair user who was refused service and asked to leave KFC in Lagos airport, just because he was a wheelchair user (the restaurant was accessible, he had eaten there before).
On Insta, I've read about disabled children excluded from school trips and these overnight "PGL" things.
Lots of exclusion.
This is a particularly egregious example of discrimination though. It's a really active, deliberate form of discrimination and it's abhorrent. It wouldn't surprise me if other parents in the class had requested it, rather than the photography company suggesting it. Do we remember the outcry from some parents when Cbeebies had a presenter who had one arm?? Some parents complained it would "frighten their children" and that Cerrie Burnell shouldn't be on the TV.
It's a lovely place, this earth |

"Well I personally don't want a picture of other people's children so just a picture of my daughter or son alone thanks.
I'm sure that in this era of fakery and vanity someone somewhere is offering to Photoshop their children's appearances and guaranteed some parents will accept "
It was the "whole class" photo. Schools usually do individual ones plus a class one. Parents have the choice of what, if anything, to buy.
We rarely buy photos from school because it costs £40 just to do a digital download!! |

Yeah I realise that, we never wanted a whole class photo and yes I agree with what you said it was probably parents asking for the service and the company offered it to everyone as a result. |

I would have thought the correct answer to the parents who asked was: “Sorry, we don’t discriminate.” |

That shows the character of those people and the hatred they have for fellow humans. |

Yep, just because there is a market for it, doesn’t mean it should be catered to. |

My first school picture, there were several children poking their tongues out at other children.
We weren't disabled though, so that's the picture we fucking got. Fuck me what is this world coming to. |

Including the parents of the three deleted children.
The company should have obviously declined.
Where do you draw the line ? E.G. Could you remove the tall kid because he makes my son look small ? |

As a parent of a neuro diverse child i find that notion abhorent. If any parents took up that offer they need to take a long hard look at tbemselves. The school and council need to distance themselves from that company. |

"Happens all the time sadly.

Access to leisure activities for disabled people is woeful. As a wheelchair using parent, I've been unable to get into all sorts of leisure venues where kids parties are being held. On some occasions, I've had to send my daughter in with her classmates and just sit in the car outside while everyone else has a coffee inside. Any disabled child would be equally unable to participate. It's not a nice feeling. |
