It was actually ok, cos they brought quite a bit of innovation, like basic plumbing and sanitation.
After they left, going to the toilet, meant going out into a field, for the next 1000 years. (True.)

I remember watching a documentary about this, absolutely heartbreaking the anger I still feel when I think of it is unreal. Not long after I'd seen it my 3 year old went missing in a shopping centre and it was beyond terrifying.

Every single event listed above occurred well into my adult life.
The earliest national event I can remember was the King's funeral. We didn't get a day off school but had a silence during which we were briefed by our teacher to imagine the King going to heaven (how sweet)!
I can also remember my uncle arriving at our farm one day and saying to my dad "Have you heard the news? Stalin's kicked the bucket". I took that quite literally as I had never heard that expression before but I had heard Stalin mentioned frequently around that time.
I now need to go and check who died first, Stalin or King George VI. |

I now realise that my two memories above were preceded by seeing newsreel pictures at the cinema of the 'Flying Enterprise' freighter sinking off Cornwall in 1952.

The Challenger disaster in 1986. The School I went to had been doing lots of space themed stuff the year before due to the "Teacher in Space" thing (Christa McAuliffe). It was fairly shortly followed by the Chernobyl disaster. |

Aye growing up in the Badlands during the troubles I think all my first news memories will have been about them.
I remember the Hillsborough disaster and discussed it in Primary school. What I most remember is our teacher's "mask" slipping and saying something along the line "there's more to this and the truth is being hidden". He died in the early 00's so never got to see that he was right. |

In the mid 80s a private jet had to make an emergency landing at a near by race coarse. The pilot turned into a local celebrity as he had to wait a few weeks for a runway to be built.
It wouldn’t have been huge world news but for a lad of 5 or 6 who’d never seen a plane up close it was a huge deal. |

I think Elvis dying is probably my first childhood news memory. It was a really hot summer. I was nearly 8, and I can remember my little sister and I playing in a paddling pool in the garden when my mum came out in tears. |

We were camping in Spain. My brother asked my mum to make him a black armband which he wore on the beach with his swimming trunks. |

I remember the first time I saw colour television was Princess Anne's wedding. Seeing The Clangers were pink not grey blew my mind. |

And a ell of a lot of work was done to make sure that it didn't.
The problem was all down to the fact that an awful lot of systems were still running COBOL programs on mainframes and with COBOL, it is necessary to define the date fields - i.e., you need to allocate memory space for it.
When a lot of these programs were first written back in the 1960's, nobody envisaged that they'd still be in use 30 to 40 years later.
Just to explain how it works.
A computer can only process the information it is given.
If you have defined a date as being DDMMYY, you've only allocated memory for two numbers for the year.
Now imagine that you have a piece of software that is running calculations based on someone's age.
When the last two digits of the year are greater than those of the persons date of birth, no problem.
But when you pass into a new century, the computer doesn't automatically know that 00 actually means 100 etc. and so you start to get problems, which is why a lot of COBOL and CICS programmers were earning a lot of money leading up to the year 2000 to go through all the lines of code and change the YY to YYYY.
