Did you know that pubs were started by, and generally run by, women? Right up to the 19th century - a woman would put a branch outside her house to signal that she had a brew on and she's got enough to sell. Literally made her house public for the evening.
Sounds fun
(history nerds, I look forward to you correcting me if I got any of that wrong ) |

"Romans put vine leaves outside 'tabernae' to show they sold wine. When they arrived in Britain vines weren't available so people used a green bush or branch."
Huh, that makes sense.
Apparently over time they turned into ornate massive billboards hanging over streets, but some fell and landed up killing people so they had to regulate the size of them.
Also: if a woman made a bad batch of ale then she'd be punished through public humiliation, by which I mean she'd have to sit outside her house while all the locals told her how bad her ale was |
