Next week on channel 4. Think it said Thursday.

I saw a film recently called the Sessions. Based on true story of a guy in an iron lung who had never had sex and hired a sex surrogate to lose his virginity with (Holly Hunt).

What a job!

You've got to feel for people who have been unable to have sex for medical reasons - i think that sex sessions for them should be on prescription or free on the nhs Z

Agree, but dont know how they would recruit for the therapists.

What criteria would they need?

Brilliant film tho.x

Pay for a therapist to have sex with them...... which is what the film is about.

if they are unable to move - to walk possibly - then they would find it a tad difficult to have sexual liaisons in the usual way - don't they deserve a little fun and perhaps sex that may be out of their reach in 'normal' circmstances? Z

I wish there was NHS treatment for lack of compassion and maybe an injection to combat argumentativeness. Sadly I think it may be just beyond NHS funding.

People are on waiting lists for months for serious illnesses and you think the NHS should fork out just so someone can have sex??

People in their late 70s / 80s are still operated on whilst younger patients are held on a waiting list.

Should we draw the line at 65 year olds being operated on?

I think it means that they are able to have sex but they are unable to meet people to take the step to have sex - ie. an iron lung must be a bit of a hardship on your social life! Z

The guy in the film was in an iron lung (for about 12 hours per 24) because of polio. He could not move himself due to muscle waste, but could have an erection etc and could feel sensation all over his body. So, he had never experienced any kind of sexual activity.

National Health Service....

Would you please explain to me the health implications in not having sex?

Or are one of the many that think the NHS should pay for everything just so people feel better...

You want to feel better by having sex? Having a problem finding a willing partner?

Hire an escort!

- it seems to me that you have a limited capacity for empathy and sympathy - sex is a basic human instinct - i would not want to deny anyone at least one chance to experience what most of us take for granted. Z

but in that case just hire them a hooker, there are loads of agencies that specialise in disabled people

i must admit i don't see getting sex a priority for the NHS system

NHS is supposed to be to help ill people, all be it some of their illnesses self inflicted, not having sex isn't a illness

I dont think hiring a hooker would be acceptable by anyone, including the disabled person. Except of course if he acutally asked for a hooker.

This was more about a guy who could not move by himself, could not breathe for long unaided, had never ever touched a woman or even seen a naked women, was obviously having sexual thoughts and dreams etc, and wanted to experience sex in a safe, and medically understnding environment (which a hooker wouldnt provide).

He himself has issues over seeing a surrogate which he talks thru with his priest (a very intersting conversation).

I agree that a healthy sex life is a basic human right but I think you are pushing this a bit far.

With that line of thought the NHS would also pay for sex therapists /prostitutes for the married men whose wives have "gone off sex"...

What about depression? It's not always life threatening. So should anti depressants be charged at the full rate? What about paliative care - the patients aren't going to live so why bother? Your cold heart makes me sad for you. Z

What about the ugly? they might struggle to get a decent sex life through no fault of their own, or people with bad personalities etc, Would we then be expected to pay for THEM to have sex too?

Anyway, if you have a severe disability, you get disability allowances, they is supposed to pay for the additional needs. So pay for the shagging out of that.

There was a thing on tv about there being sex centres where people can go to have intamite times with people if they have mesical conditions preventing them from having a "normal" sex life. They do pay for it out of there own pocket at the minute. It was on a couple of month ago in the morning with Hollie willoboobies and thingy schofield.

but most illnesses are self inflicted

smoking brings on strokes, obesity is the main cause of adult diabetes the list is endless, I work with people everyday whos conditions are self inflicted but you lot are still paying my wages to look after them

so what do you do, leave people to die or live in their own shit because they arnt deserving?

If people are ill they need help simple as and no sex isn't a illness

The point is, its not just about the physical inability to actually have sex. Its also the mental 'suffering' that the guy in the film was going through, He could see women, fancy them, get an erection, but not actually do anything about it, he could even cum from dreams etc, but his 'carer' had to clean him up.

Which also makes it not just a physical issue, but a mental one too.

I also wonder if ti was a woman who had the disability and was frustrated to hell, would the views on here be any different. Interesting that almost all of the posts have been from women.

London

I don't know about the film but I thought the documentary was about people with intimacy issues as well as shyness and pain.

They are sent to San Francisco to meet surrogates to have sex with. Who funds this I don't know. How flying half way across the world to fuck a stranger is beyond my understanding.

Would I be happy funding it? Of course not, like IVF, gastric bands etc "luxury", I'd rather fund cancer treatment, neonatal care etc...but quality of life comes in various guises.
