I jumped on the scales today also and I weigh the same as last week (crying). Then put on a pair of trousers and they look a lot better on me now. Inches are slowly mealting and I'm sure the kgs will start going soon.

Keep on track and don't get hung up on the kgs.

Stepping on a scale is just a one second snapshot of your day. Loads of things can influence what it says. Your sleep, your hydration, your hormones, how late you ate yesterday, what you ate yesterday etc.

How you feeling (stringer, fitter, more mentally alert etc) is more important.

I don’t weigh myself now - the thing is you are always remembering when you were *insert lower weight but your body changes, so at times it becomes an impossible task.

I’ve been going to boot camp every weekday morning for 2 months and so I can see the areas where I needs to lose weight and where I needed gains and I whilst the gains appear to have levelled out, I can fit into my clothes much easier and they look good on me.

You’ll be turning fat into muscle and so the weight mightn’t change but measure by how good you feel and how much sexier you feel in your body and clothes

The more regularly you weigh the better you can make sense of the ups and downs. If the overall pattern is down a few ups along the way is normal.

The 'muscle heavier than fat' thing isn't that helpful if your goal is fat loss.

I am contemplating doing that. I am now at 23cm lost off my waist since Jan - fussing about not losing a paltry lb this week seems a bit silly really.

I was so upset this morning over it and that is foolish.

Pick your fave dress, or jeans or something that’s a bit of a stretch, then measure yourself about whether you can get in and wear it happily. Scales are something of a guide, but the self confidence and mental reward really comes from other things.

If you are exercising and trying to lose weight, it is never a linear process with weight falling off week by week. It is perfectly natural to have weeks where nothing seems to be happening but you realise you’ve lost a cm or two from your waist.

Over a longer period, (say 6 weeks), if you’re not losing weight too then something isn’t quite right … either overestimating the amount of calories you are burning and need to step that side of things up, or you are consuming more calories than you think you are.

Give it a good bash for 6 weeks, now until the end of April, (allowing for the fact that you might eat / drink a bit more over Easter … make it up in the week before and after), and see where you are in terms of fitness, cms and weight loss. Really commit for those 6 weeks, and see if that gives you a launchpad for May and June.

I am doing the same myself. Lost a lot of fitness last year, put on weight and steered this head feeling sluggish and unfit. The hardest bit is building basic fitness, but now that I’m past the remedial stage I know that it is easier to get through the next phase. Haven’t lost much weight yet, but have lost a fair bit around my waist. It get easier now that the weather is better and better daylight hours, much easier to tag in a morning or evening walk on top of existing activity levels. So I know I can easily lose more weight in April than I did in January, for example.

Easy to take that view when you are fit.

If someone is overweight and needs to lose weight, then tracking weight is important. Most people I know who don’t weigh themselves are overweight and have been for years. My mother is a good example, wouldn’t weigh herself because she placed more faith in how her clothes felt on her. This was just avoiding seeing a number she didn’t like. And she would tell us that she coild tell she had lost weight, when she clearly hadn’t.

This changed when she had hip and knees pain wien she was about 80, and the doctor told her that the best thing she could do to reduce the pain was to lose weight. She lost 2 stone in 6 months, regained huge amounts of mobility, and the scale is her friend now.

Losing 23cm from your waist is absolutely outstanding!

As I said earlier, losing weight is never a linear process, and the occasional plateau is perfectly normal. Having lost 23cm, you are clearly doing the right things so just have faith in your process and keep up the good work.

Once again, 23cm in less than 3 months is an incredible result, wow!

Agreed, gym and walking are both effective. The main benefit of walking is how much of it we can do. In half-decent shape, we can do it for hours.

And completely agreed re the assessment of importance of diet.

I had a similar situation on Friday after my fortnightly weigh-in. It sucks, but changes in measurements and body shape are as good, or in some cases better. If you’ve had a gain or maintain but are still below where you started that’s also a win.

I’ve had an injury that has kept me out of the gym for almost a month, but I’d also slipped with my nutrition a bit which led to a small gain. I’m trying not to get frustrated though as I’m still down from where I started. I know how to sort it so it’s just a case of getting back to the gym and sorting out my meal planner.

It's doesn't. A kilo is still a kilo.

It's the size that is different. Muscle is more condensed than fat so its smaller.

For the size ! Muscle is three times heavier than fat !

So the best way to measure this is my measurements of your arms thighs waist etc

So much can effect your weight it’s outdated water intake time of days air temperature an all effect your weight

For example I am the heaviest I have ever been but my waist is the smallest in probably 3 or 4 years !

Really don't put yourself down or be defeated because of the scales. It's not a good metric to measure success by on a week by week basis.

Stick with the CMs and also look at long term trends not the short term.

Above all be happy and don't let it drag you down.

True to an extent. Weight varies from day to day, but if the scale tells you you gained or lost a stone in the past 3 months, that’s not a random fluctuation.

We use scales, but are not fixated, they are just 1 metric. We take measurements around the body, i.e. arms, legs, calves, waist, chest etc. It's all about body proportion and how fit you feel, not what the scales say. And BMI is utter garbage

BMI on its own is pretty useless.

A few years back I had 15 per cent body fat, was fit, and had a BMI of 27 which on its own would suggest that I was overweight.

Nobody used bmi on its own though.

Most rapid weight gain is water. Plus if you’re gymming you’ll be creating muscle, which is heavier than fat. I hate the rules by which we’re judged in weight, BMI etc. it’s not a one size fits all. K

It's concerning that many people on here are saying stuff that isn't true.

Scales are helpful if you know how to use them

Factor in that you have water weight, this can fluctuate from 1-5bls in just 1 day!

Factor in the fact that you will 100% always weight more before you use the toilet (specifically for a shit)

Etc.

I was the same for so long. I know it's easier to say than do but don't be so hard on yourself. I think for me weight lifting helped massively. It gets the heart racing plus burns fat quickly. Plus you look fantastic doing it x

Just don’t give up sometimes you need to shock the body doing different exercises as the body adjust to a routine then plateau.

Switch your routine around or do different exercises and rotate to your old routine after 3 weeks or a month

The scale is only one metric. And its generally less useful for women due to their hormones. Nearer your period you are more likely to hold excess water. Not much you can do about that.

Depending on your goals, what you see and how you feel are far more important than that number between your toes

That's good good going, just keep up the grind, it does get easier and feels good when hit your targets

I worked out that I'm down 49.5kg in 2 years, feel the healthiest I've ever been

And I still use the scales most mornings, sometimes they please me, some they don't, but the number is always lower than where I was when I began

Indeed, people get fixated on weight rather than proportions and how you feel. We have scales (Garmin) that give a whole bunch of metrics that just show how that one weight aspect is affected by so many factors. Its 1 parameter in the whole mix

So, we focus on do we feel happy about how our clothes fit and look and is life happy.

You are right there, scales arent everything. I dont really weigh myself so much. I use my 6pack as a guide, like, if I see them are fading away I know I am eating too much and I need to cut back and if they stay the same. I know I am on the right track and if I see more details I know I am in a calorie deficit too

BMI on its own is pretty useless.

A few years back I had 15 per cent body fat, was fit, and had a BMI of 27 which on its own would suggest that I was overweight.

Nobody used bmi on its own though. "

BMI is the worst invention ever!

I've been fortunate enough to have always had a love of sport/exercise, so I have always been on the toned side of life

But whenever I have a BMI test I shudder, according to my BMI I am obese!

OP, you will have good days and bad days when it comes to weight lose. Try to find a form of exercise you enjoy and have fun! BTW sexercise is also a great way of burning off a few calories

It’s frustrating and disheartening isn’t it.

When you’re putting lots of work in you should trust in that if you can. You’re on the right path, you just need some time. Weight loss is a curve, the more you lose the harder it gets to shift the last few inches.

I don’t have the same goals but I take mirror selfies roughly every month and keep them in an album on my phone. It works better for me than measuring every week because I have a month to see a change and I only want that change to be visible, rather than metric.

Stay the course though, I’m sure the results will come.

Yesterday I was up by .5kg

Today I'm down by 1kg

Over 5kg down overall though which is the bit that matters (for now).

I totally feel your pain. Eat less and move more, they say it's that simple, yeah right. I did that for several months but no weight loss totally demotivated.

Use a tracking app.

It's all the little things that catch you out - cooking oil, butter etc. etc.

Track what you're really eating for a couple of weeks. The one I use recalculates a recommended calorie allowance each day based on weight and food eaten.

I was tracking absolutely everything and measuring everything incl lettuce and tomato ketchup and was under the guidance of a PT. Frustrated indeed.

As I got older, this failed for me (move more, eat less), and I love my food so I was totally disheartened and eating low fat didn't do a thing, other than remove enjoyment of eating.

Enter Keto, which for me was a revelation. I can have a weekend fry up, eat cheeses etc., and still lose weight. It's all about carb reduction and the right balancing of what's needed. Takes a while to shift into different recipes, but the food is very tasty (what I cook anyhow) and I love it. Hard for the initial carb crash though, but then I felt so much more energetic and happy.

Think you have to find whatever best motivates you. Ultimately it's a matter of finding what level of calories is best for you and sticking to it.

I'm putting my focus on aiming to get the best nutritional balance each day within the limited calories. Takes the focus away from what I'm missing out on and puts it on learning about which foods have been lacking in my normal diet.

Iced lollies provide a low calorie sweet treat.
