Billy Bragg for the melancholy love songs as much as the political. Not forgetting the personal is political, of course |

Hate to say it but Bono has penned a lot of very good tunes and a lot you wouldn't know he had written for other artists. Gary Barlow likewise. And I've always liked to stuff Paul Heaton has done. |

Ray Davies by far
I remember hearing 'Lola' for the first time and thinking 'how innovative and controversial' making you understand another perspective of alternative lifestyles. As with a lot of his songs it is in the narrative and the story is put together so well. |

Even is all Christy Moore had written was Viva la Quinte Brigada, that'd be enough to put him in the top flight. |

Fully accept all criticism re. my remarks about Christy. I have a copy of Graffiti Tungue and it's one of my fave CDs. Rory is Gone, etc. etc.

"58 Replies, and not one mention of one of the greatest songwriters this country has ever produced..
Chris Difford of Squeeze.."
Chris and Glenn would pen the lyrics and melody in a matter of minutes, once Glenn had an inkling of a melody Chris would be there with the lyrics in the blink of an eye.
Most of it written and first played out in a tiny Plumstead front room. |

What a great thread....
Every one mention brings memories to mind...
How about the best every single song by a British or Irish songwriter...
For me it's..."First time ever I saw her face".... By Kirsty Mccolls dad Ewen...
With Richard Thompsons..."Dimming of the Day" a close second... |

Way too difficult, but some of my favs...
'In my life' by The Beatles is beautiful.
Sympathy for the Devil by The Rolling Stones is magnificent.
Baby O Reily by The Who, never tire of it
Digging you scene- Blow Monkeys, great pop.
Old Main Drag- The Pogues, very sad
Stay with me- The Faces, simply great

Someone who I think is incredibly underrated/unknown is mike Rosenberg (more commonly known as Passenger). Beautiful voice, and brilliant lyrics. I recommend any and all of his songs. Thank me later. |

Yep...and coming from that area myself I listen to their lyrics and think 'yep..been there' 'done that'..'nkow that type of person' and those streets...the pair of them are very talented, and nice fellas with it...Chris seems is the more grounded of the two though |
