Hello all,

I have just been diagnosed with Atrial fibrillation, I am wondering if any of you fabbers also have this. If so how have you managed with exercise to maintain your fitness. I cycle a lot and this is potentially going to have a big hit on my cycling which in turn will impact my mental health as cycling is my Happy place. Allows me to escape the stresses of weekly work stuff and just enjoy the outdoors.

you can still cycle .... just keep an eye on your heart rate.

No need to not exercise.

You might just have to switch your focus..aim for zonal HR training.

Hopefully your fitness level will be a bonus and the docs can help you control it

I have had AF for 3 years now, I have had 4 Electrical Cardioversions in an attempt to get my heart back to normal rhythm none of which worked. It is a case now of keep taking the tablets.

The situation regarding exercise does not crop up with me as I have severe arthritis in both knees, I find walking hard never mind running or cycling.

There is an excellent little booklet available from British Heart foundation shops details all the do's and dont's about AF.

Don't know when but there was a chat on Jeremy vine radio 2 about AF and smart watches and how they can alert you if in AF and even call 999 if program to.

Might be worth looking in to.

Hope you thebest going forward.

Depends on what variant you have and how it makes you feel, I would seek Dr's advice before undertaking any exercise....listen to your body, only you knows how it can make you feel and by god it can make you feel awful.

I have paroxysmal Atrial fibrillation and tbf it doesn't impact my life, not had an episode of AF for nearly a year, I go the gym and I do zumba, boxing and swim, but tbh I don't stop even if my heart goes into arrhythmia because zumba has reset it back to NSR before now.

And yeah, invest in a smart watch which can record an ECG, mine has been invaluable for monitoring my heart and can tell me if I'm in an abnormal heart rhythm....although I usually feel it, I can tell instantly when it starts and also when it stops

I have AF. Started about seven years ago, had a successful cardio version, came back two years ago, sorted itself but has now returned. I'm on beta blockers and blood thinners. I saw a specialist today to discuss having an ablation.

Regarding exercise I do find I get tired more easily and my muscles ache, particularly my feet. You'll just have to try it out and see how your body responds. Tiredness is one of the side effects because insufficient blood is pumped around the body and this isn't helped by the beta blockers slowing the heart. Sometimes getting an erection isn't as easy as it was either.....

If you want a decent heart monitor then try a Kardia. Quite expensive but was recommended by my specialist because it can provide the same info as a six lead ECG. Good luck.

Try mixing walking and cycling, as others have said monitor your heart rate and keep it around 140 ish.

Depends how bad it is.

It might be managed with or without medication, you might need an Catheter Abolation or cardio version.

Both are not nice.

If you need to take medication, you will be able to cycle, just not to tour de france levels.

Thanks again for the supportive messages. My biggest frustration is that each year I try to find a more challenging event to take part in and push myself both physically and mentally. But more importantly set a target to work towards. Whilst doing these I raise money when it is truly difficult and to date have raised a few thousand pounds for both Marie Currie and Macmillan. I was hoping to raise another load for Macmillan this year by doing last year's challenge as a training ride for this year's challenge. So in my head I am battling with the feelings of failure and the one place I go to clear it is maybe not an option or not as it once was for now. The big thing is that I get to see the treatment team and assess what the next steps are either meds or one of the other treatments you all mentioned.

Any way the Sun is shining I am going to get the bike meander to the club/coffee shop see the rest of my group and chat and ride home.

Thanks again.

So the sun stayed out, or more to the point thr grey clouds held onto their rain and it stayed dry. Cool but dry. Manged 30 miles sung my heart out listening to the music of my youth on my bone conductive headphones. Felt good at the end of it. So mental health levels resetting back to good happy levels. Just need Ireland to close out the 6 nations, see a good friend this evening for a couple of beers and I will be ready to tackle the world again for another week. Thanks again for the positive messages and advice and support.
