It’s recently occurred to me that my flat is filled with bits and pieces from IKEA (other furniture manufacturers are available) and those little tags that hang off each item. You know the ones; the collection of vowels and umlauts that make up each tongue twisting, incomprehensible name that flaunts its Swedishness at you. But have you ever googled what those words mean? I did this morning and frankly, I’m shocked!

Go on folks, give it a Google and report back with your findings

Oh, I've just yesterday bought a miniature greenhouse (for my Lego plants), and the name means field berries apparently, or also arctic raspberries, or arctic brambles. Depends what website you choose . (Åkerbär)

We don't have anything from Ikea although I'd love to. Every time we attempted to go there we ended up having a row so we have up

We go very rarely now, though have used it in the past..

I'm barely up the escalator and start humming the tune 'we gotta get out of this place'..

If so.......I'm out.

My husband enjoys building IKEA and other flatpack on his own. I am content with his life choices and it makes for a very harmonious marriage

I don't actually have any labels on the furniture I do have. Which now makes me sad I can't look the names up.

This means I now need to go to IKEA and treat myself to something right??

IKEA on average is more expensive than a lot of antique furniture, plus it's chipboard/MDF not real wood with a shit build quality. The odd bit that is real wood is made from offcuts of the custom kitchen industry that has had all the life dried out of it in a kikn.

I recently built some IKEA furniture for my parents. Just to save my mum from hitting my dad with a hammer when he woukd have inevitably got frustrated and started throwing things. I had to let him help, so I let him glue a couple of bits together, just so he felt he had achieved something.

Ah yes, but it is handy if you are time poor and don't have to trawl second hand/charity/antique stores to find something. Especially with the modern trend of having matching furniture.

You can view your local auction house catalogues online, you don't have to attend the sale to bid,you can do it online or leave a bid on an item. You don't even need to go to the saleroom to view the item, they will do a condition report for free.

I was thinking that. I always peel them off once assembled.

I do have a draw full of instructions though....should have thought to check that before I started a 4 hour drive as now can't remember what anything is called bar the seemingly judgemental mattress......

Not all items are named after things, or words, some are places.

Kallax, for instance, is a place.

Although my footstool means "ore".
