So what do I feel, see or do , where at the end of the workout, like what are teh criteria that I say, this is a really good workout, this is an effect workout. I am getting results from this versus, this was a shit workout, fuck, this is not gioing to do anything for me, so the primary factor, the main difference is you should feel pumped, that is how I judge my workout.
No. I am not saying , it is not like you have to check a box to say I had a good workout or not, because you can get a pump doing not so intense sets.
To get a pump is more to it than that. I think that you have to have some pretty difficult high intensity sets, to add to that pumpness. I dont think that light sets would do so much.
I think that doing to low intensity is missing out on stimulators benefits of tension, there are of course many different ways of going about it and what makes a good workout.
What is your view about it and what makes a good workout for you, are you also chasing the pump in your workouts too?

That sounds a lot like the arnie quote from pumping iron about working out being like coming.
For me a good workout would be one I start and finish and enjoy. Which is why you look like you do and I look like I do... Kudos to you shag |

Me getting up at the ass crack of dawn (4am) to get to the gym before the walking dead (people who do 5 moves and then sit on the equipment scrolling on their phones for the next 10 mins!)
A good workout for me is one where I go hard, seriously hard, so that the next day I REALLY feel it; like today
I do 3 sets of 15, whatever the machine or until I physically can't do another move.
I've had a trainer for years but recently rejoined and going it alone and I LOVE it.
I put the headphones in and would probably kill anyone who interrupts me, I just get in the zone. I don't get up that early for fun or to make friends. I'm there to seriously workout for MY benefit.
This is ME time. |

I think just getting out the door makes a good workout. That and not getting injured.
Everyone is different with their goals so a workout is subjective. Is it for muscle, endurance, weight loss or mental health?
Currently my work out is restraining myself for a race Sunday so... Very low intensity. I feel like a caged lion. |

Just picking up on this bit as it interests me. When I was going to the gym, it wasn't to train it was just to keep fit and healthy, so answering what makes a good session to me, it's when it becomes easy. The whole tension, getting max out of each session as if you're not hitting peak every time doesn't realise the point you're still active - and injury takes a long time to recover if you can at all.
I didn't go for bulk or physique just fitness and stress relief, I wouldn't push myself but was doing more reps and moving bigger weights at 10.5st than the lads flexing in mirrors. Saying that, the few hours I'd spend in there were nothing compared to a manual labour job I got. It meant anything from 6 to 12 hour days lifting, shifting, constant weighted walking. You think you're fit then someone grabs 200 odd kg and moves it like its nothing and they're maybe a couple of stone heavier than you. |

For me ideal is
6-8 work sets per body part
All work sets taken to failure (modern research has show sets of 5-30 reps produce exact same results as long as train to failure, the last 5 reps of the set being the “effective” reps)
Pick movements that suit you and your body and have good scope for progression over long term
Try to progress in weight or reps each session

The best workouts for me are those when you’ve gone that little bit further, fastest or longer and especially those days when you didn’t really want to be there but you dragged yourself out anyway and got it done |

The best work out is the one where you are tried hungry grumpy and you get through it. It’s often these are the days I will lift the heaviest as I’m not going to let it beat me. |

The answer to the question is varied Shag.
At it's most basic, every workout you do is better than every workout you don't do.
For me, because I train for specific goals, every session is part of a plan. I understand why each movement is there and how it fits the bigger picture. So every session is part of me hitting my goals.
I'll reiterate my belief that everyone that exercises should know why they do what they're doing and maybe each workout should fit into a bigger picture or be part of achieving goal(s).
(I'm using maybe and should deliberately, because I don't speak for everyone that exercises and I'm not trying to.) |

I don’t think it’s anything to do with a pump I can get that on bicep simply doing 21s
For me it’s when I’ve done at least 6 exercises of 4 sets , Set light for chest and try it would be flat incline and decline bench, flyes or cables , dips & tricep push downs. If I do less than that I don’t feel like a properly exercise the group.
Also work out to me is good when I don’t have my phone with me which is 100% of the time. It’s my time and no one else’s |

Totally agree.
I don’t have any goals/targets, I am simply executing my strategy for optimal physical and mental health, but I do know exactly why I’m training & how every move I’m doing fits into a greater plan. |

The definition depends on your goals and what stage you are at.
For a beginner or someone without that positive health realtionship, it could be as much as getting to the gym consistently.
I think for many others it's as much a sense of progression as the physical side. Not everyone is going for a pump, or to lift heavy weights.
Did you do one more rep, add 5 more pounds, one more set, run a little faster, shave a little time off your previous session. Could you stretch a little further, did you perform your skill slightly better.
All valid goals that could be seen by an individual as making a 'good' workout. |

Hey,
I think for a start being in a reasonably good mood and not forcing it! Find it throws me off when I’m in a bad mood.
I usually have a note pad with my weights & routine I compare it to the last few times if I’m moving up in weight it’s a good sign!
Feeling sore for at least 2 days also ha |

For me a good workout is when there is a noticeable improvement in performance, even just getting one more rep out.
I don’t chase the pump but I certainly enjoy it. ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |

Without trying to sound like complete Bro-Science, I’m look for ‘time under tension’.
I’m at the older age of the spectrum so for me it’s lower weights higher repetitions but making sure the repetitions are good quality and slow enough but deliberate whilst trying not to cheat the exercise.
I’m usually up at least 1 rep or an increment of weight each time. I’m very injury prone though so it has to be controlled and the form monitored as I lift the weights.
