As i tell everybody , if it isnt broken dont fix it , your mot each year pretty much tells you your car is safe and advises you of anything that needs attention.
servicing your car makes no difference whatsoever to your vehicle , your just throwing your money away .
ive had my 2008 car 4 years now , every 10,000 miles i have the engine and oil filter changed and fuel filter, still going strong and passes its mot, i do only do 7kmiles a year though.
the money ive saved not having it serviced i can buy another second hand car when current one needs changing. |

Ladies should boycott male mechanics. They should also boycott business with male CEOs and while I am at it, I also think the military has far too many male soldiers.
I look forward to the pending conscription and it including women and “refugees”
Funny when we send the British regiments of “refugees” back home to fight to make the state more like Britain. |

far from it , a main dealer will charge loads of money , for unnecessary things .. and tell you things need changing or replacing when they dont...an oil and filter change is not a full service , its just to me the heart and blood of the engine , lubricates everything , protects it , hence thats all i change. |

This is absolutely daft!!! The MOT fixes unsafe issues…the advisories tell you what needs to fixed before the next MOT…Servicing is exactly what you just mentioned…I change all the filters do an annual oil change and flush I also check all the brakes and pads before the MOT same with the suspension as I seem to go through CV joints and Bushings like they’re out of fashion (though he’s lowered by 4” so that’s my own fault)
230,000 96’ VW diesel so his engine is really only just breaking in to be fair |

please service my car will involve a full service , so they take wheels off to check brakes.check levels check suspension check exhaust , and charge extortionate amounts for the pleasure...try it if you dont believe me . |

its not daft , if the car passes the mot its safe , any advisories fix , then the cars had what they advise doing done , my rear exhaust box had advisory of leaking gasses for 4 years , never been changed though. |

You’re describing what’s called a basic service. Oil and filters = basic service. "
google it , it will explain it better than me typing it.
oil and filter is a specific job /request, a sevice costs a lot more for no gain as your mot has checked everything yearly and advised you of anything that needs attention. |

^^^^^ You’re talking out of your arse there mate.
For a start you say you don’t have a service, then go on to say you have the engine oil and filter changed and fuel filter so that in itself is a service.
As for the MOT telling you your car is safe, all it does is tell you that on that day at that time it fulfilled the requirements of an MOT test.
It won’t tell you what state your cambelts in it won’t tell you what the level of pad or shoe wear is on your brakes , it has to pass an efficiency test on the rollers, this won’t tell you if they are going to need changing in the next few months , the pads could be well shot before your next MOT and you end up scoring the discs all to fuck.
The MOT won’t be testing the strength of your antifreeze or the level and state of the oil in your gearbox or axle.
Lots of service stuff is within the scope of a relatively competent home mechanic so if you wanted to do it yourself fine but it still needs doing.
Thinking your MOT is any kind of service substitute is just a crock of shite. |

Not strictly true, if the pad wear can be seen without removing the wheel, then it can be reported, and failed if the pads are deemed to be less than 1.5 mm |

Lots of the chain garages take you under the ramp to look at the thing they say you need, as if that helps the non mechanically minded know they need new brake shoes or not. I appreciate the thought though and its nice to see your cars undercarriage every once in a while.  |

This has made me chuckle !
I always try and recommend that people get their mot done and then their service six months later so their car is checked more often.
I could go for a mot tomorrow and in a few months something like suspension drop links could be on the way out.
Simple things like stripping and cleaning/re greasing the brakes could save having sticking calipers etc which is a lot more costly to change.

I have heard stories from a female friend where KF, a well known brand, quoted hundreds for something that didnt need doing. When she got an independent mechanic to check he confirmed that they KF were trying to scam her. |

Does anybody replace brake fluid and/or bleed brakes any more?
...and what became of that idea of changing the air in tyres for an inert gas?
Don't remind me about drop links. I had a vehicle for 15 years equipped with that money making wheeze!
Been lucky with my current two not having them but I've noticed they are back on the next one which will be coming my way (when its female owner gets fed up with being ripped off for sevicing). |

This isn't new... my ex husband was a tech.
He was away and the car was making a odd noise.. so took it to the local garage. Now bear in mind if was a diesel.. they tried to tell me it was spark plugs.. so I asked him to go get his manager.
Gave them a little lesson on how diesel goes boom with pressure compression and petrol is set on fire and as mine is a diesel it does not have spark plugs.
Got 4 free tyres out of that.. can't remember what the noise was.

I bought a car off a lady many years ago. She'd sent it for a pre-MOT. And handed me what they'd found (Kwik Fit.) And all the repairs she'd had on the car....which I didn't take much notice of.
Bought it and a month later took it for an MOT and they said everything was wrong with it. The main fault being a cylinder not firing and a leaking brake piston valve thingy. Which I think I knew about. As, the pre MOT, had picked up the leaky brake piston I think.
However, they changed the wrong one when I put it in for the MOT.
So eventually me and the lady I bought the car from, after she'd finally figured out why I was avoiding her. Decided to get together and arranged a meeting to see the branch manager.
It was fun to see him trying to explain, when producing all the receipts. Why he thought it good practice to replace the lady's brake discs every time they replaced her brake pads. Every year for four straight years. |

I think you'll find many "refugees" would love a job. I'm sure a few would be happy in the military too.
But is the subtext of your post that women should put up with this because they (and those pesky refugees) can't do without us?
It wouldn't take much to find out about sexism and its impact on the workforce. If the UK (indeed most of the world) had been different in years gone by, there'd be a lot more female mechanics for women or men to choose from.

It happens. Yes. Why? Taking advantage of tradition.
Traditionally men are mechanics. Men are petrol heads. Men are more physically suited for heavy laborious forms of employment. A lot of men are assholes. A lot of men are also fucking stupid. Mix all that together and you are going to produce a very prick heavy pool of people who will take advantage of anyone they think wont know any better. Men or women, but mostly women because of the above reasons.
Luckily, as times change, and generations change we see more women taking up traditionally male occupations. More women interested in motorsport and cars. More women happy to get stuck into a driveway project car.
And on the male side, more acceptance of women in these roles. More recognition that the woman bringing the car to the workshop may know more about cars than they appear too.
Social media being as fast as it is, any negative reviews posted about a garage spreads to thousands of potential customers instantly. The result more garages wanting to have and keep a good reputation. The best customer is a returning customer.
Sadly there are still a lot of places and people who try to take advantage of vulnerable customers.
Best thing to do is research the garages you potentially want to use. How long have they been in business in the same place. And tiptop of the list, online reviews. Dont just look at the stars, read the reviews, are the negative ones justified. Some people like nothing more than a moan online even if it's uncalled for.
Be vigilant. Question everything. Ask a friend or someone who knows more if they think you are being shafted.

I'm usually the other way, a pretty woman standing in my reception and I'll tend to charge less, I'm also realistic with all customers about things that actually want doing on cars rather than trying to fleece people, better to have a happy customer come back many times than hit them for everything you can and only see them once.
