40 years ago I was told by a friend that I wasn't a real man if I didn't drink.
My response was that a real man doesn't need a crutch.
I've been told by an Englishwoman on a course and an American while on holidays that I couldn't call myself a true Irishman if I didn't drink.
If anyone asks why I don't I tell them the truth.
I don't want to.
I don't need to.
I never have done
I never will.
Simple. |

"How do you non drinkers out there respond to that very strange question
Why do you NOT drink?
Not a dig at you drinkers btw"
I have a drink once in a while but for the most part I do not drink.
Reason is, I just do not need alcohol to have a good time. |

Ten years ago when I first stopped drinking I got this question weekly. My friends and dates just couldn’t get it. But it seems to have become far more common and now I usually just get a ‘Oh right, ok then.”
It doesn’t irritate me, though, because I know I’m still in a minority so I’m happy to explain. |

It’s not that I am not a non drinker - it’s just that I am not an active drinker. I stopped after a relationship ended because I didn’t want to be “that guy” who drank at home alone and I realised I just felt much much better for no/reduced levels of alcohol. Now I find that even a single drink really makes me feel it in the morning. |

"Ps was the username ‘nonameyet1’ already taken?!
Have you both connected and started an anonymity club? (anonymously)."
Yes it’s my profile name on the other site, serves me right for being lazy I suppose |

I don't like being d*unk and I don't like hangovers even more. Since I have stopped drinking I have realized how obnoxious, idiotic and boring d*unk people are. And if you can't have a good time without alcohol, well I feel deeply sorry for you. |

"I don't think it's a strange question really
People probably only ask out of curiosity
Do you ask people why they don’t take Heroin?
Given the obvious differences between the 2, no"
The obvious difference between the two being that one is legal and the other isn't? |

It’s quite an assumption to think that people who sometimes consume alcohol can’t have fun without any alcohol. |

Depends on my mood.
If I'm feeling happy I'll just say: Because I don't want to.
If I'm annoyed I'll just say: Because organ failure, smelling like shit, behaving like shit and pissing away my money do not sound like appealing past times. Plus all alcohol just tastes the same anyway unless you water it down incredibly and at that point I might aswell just get a heckin soda. |

Bad experiences or being the designated driver are my go to explanations. I'm not teetotal though, I do drink sometimes. Mostly I just can't be bothered.
Anyone that gets funny about it isn't mature enough for me to be pay attention to

I'm not making that assumption about people who sometimes consume alcohol. I'm making that assumption about people for whom every activity revolves around drinking. |

I’d rather do things in my spare Time that are more positive to my health and mental health and I would rather check my bank account on Monday, and it not be overdrawn cause of a heavy weekend lol |

I was more thinking that one is a perfectly normal thing that quite a large percentage of the population do as part of socialising |

Should drinking till you fall over and can't function the next day be a normal part of socialising though?
I prefer to socialise over a cup of tea and a nice meal. Maybe even a glass of wine but, 12 pints of gutrotter doesn't seem like something one should do at a social occasion to me.
Also, there seems to be a lot of violence as a result of drinking which seems like pretty antisocial behaviour to me.
I'm not defending heroin users by the way, I just think the distinctions are largely arbitrary. |

I don't drink 'cos I don't like the taste.
I've never come across any incredulity or negativity because of it. Maybe because I'm happy to be out in drinkers' company, enjoying myself? Or maybe 'cos they know they'll get a lift home |

I'm not a non drinker but if someone challenges a perfectly reasonable choice I've made I just turn the question back on them and ask them why they made the choice they did. Or, if I'm feeling particularly fed up I just smile and reply "rude!" . |

"It's only an honest curious question and I get that but I like to say that I also don't smoke or take heroin and people never ask why. "
This is what I don't get either!
Because people being nosy asking personal questions like that will leave themselves open to getting an awkward answer! I think its time people wake up and engage their brain before opening their mouth! Just respect that for whatever reason some people don't consume alcohol! |

"Just personal choice. It's never been something that appealed to me"
That's usually my answer but I find it hilarious when I've been in clubs or group socials and they ask if it's for religious reasons. Like yeah, I can have sex with random strangers but my soul would be damned if I drink alcohol |

First it shouldn’t be presumed that I’d take part in something that is ultimately very unhealthy. But I just say I don’t need it to have a good time, I don’t need the hangovers and I don’t need the regrets lol |

I reply simply I am not mentally weakened with the need to contaminate the purity of my body |
