Is that the long and winding road, Abbey Rd or Penny Lane "

"I think I'll stay out of this one.
As a Bowie fan, you must feel let down and short changed?! "
Seriously? not at all. The album is number one in 40 countries and outsold bon jovi by two to one. The v&a have sold 42000 tickets for the exhibition. is it a bad album? no. presumably bowie fans are buying the album and tickets.i don't want to sound like a huge snob but "bowie fans" who think his best album is lets dance aren't bowie fans. they're lets dance fans. i haven't listened to it since 1985.I've been obsessed with the man for 40 years. i even named my son David. for the person who read a negative album review i'd like to know which paper. the guardian called it the greatest comeback album ever. in my eyes the man can do no wrong. except lets dance/tonight/never let me down. |

Saw him live 40 years ago at Hammersmith Odeon.
Guy has influenced more people than any other artist, and given away more hits than some bands have had in their career.
Not bad for a guy that has a bus pass and still outsells Bon Jovi in 40 different countries.. |

Says it all, though I actually don't mind some of 'Lets Dance', mainly the bits where Stevie Ray Vaughan gets to go nuts !
All the reviews I've read have been favourable but casual fans aren't going to like the Mike Garson, Avant Garde jazz stuff that has been a feature of a lot of his later work.
I'll head off to Pseud's Corner now... |

Ziggy stardust, pin ups, low, lodger, Aladdin sane, station to station, hunky dory. I am sure I have missed a couple from that "brief period" in the 70's
I even like the laughing gnome
The comeback is certainly better than any recent material from weller, McCartney or elvis Costello |

"To be fair, I have only heard 2 singles off the album, hence the thread title. Both sounded dirgeful and would not encourage me to buy the album."
to be fair the first single had a very personal lyric that most people wouldn't have got. diehard bowie fans did get it. coupled with the fact it came out of nowhere on his birthday. someone said it was like getting a postcard from someone you love after 10 years of silence. schmaltzy? sure. but that's exactly how it was for some of us |

I think McCartney is tosh and the Beatles massively overhyped! The Stones were miles better both musically and lyrically and had the beatles not parted ways and were still a full and living collective their longevity wouldn't be anything like the stones. Bowie 's new stuff is ok and listenable and he's bound to be producing different music these days but there's a lot worse stuff more painful on the ears than Bowie! |

'A short spell of good form in the 70’s' ? He didn't make a bad album from 'The Man Who Sold the World' to 'Scary Monsters'...that's the whole of the 70’s !"
Hot Chocolate had more success than Bowie in the 70's. |
