Hock Burnt Chickens

Reports that literally millions of supermarket chickens, which you can still get for less than a fiver,suffer from hock burn which is when the ammonia in the droppings literally burn the chickens feet and legs like aid. Sometimes this can be seen as dark patches on the legs. Imagine standing in your own excrement for weeks. Overcrowding is one cause and droppings left too long. What's the solution here. It's all over the news

We stopped buying factory bred chicken long ago, we are fortunate that we can afford free range but recognise that's not the case for everyone..

This and other wrongs are simply down to economics, sadly most people won't be at all concerned by this which has been a fact for decades because it keeps food cheap..

Oooo, this is one of my major gripes!! I'm a country person so have been involved in country sports etc since I could walk. My standard response to anyone (normally townies) saying that game shooting is cruel is, "do you eat supermarket chicken"? Cheap chicken is the cruelest practice going and this proves it. These chickens, living in an area the same size as them, standing in their own shit and slaughtered at between 6 and 12 weeks old ! And game shooting is cruel ??

I worked on a chicken farm for a bit. Free range is laughable.

From chick to slaughter was only 6 weeks max. 4 weeks for the smaller chickens that go to places like KFC. They couldn't go outside till around 3/4 weeks old.

Seeing it first hand, I've not been put off from buying chicken

Tom had KFC the other day and piece was so small it was like eating a hatchling

I thought this was common knowledge to be honest? It's not only chickens you eat the state of the battery egg chickens we rescue is horrendous.

There is enough information on how meat is produced, but people want cheap food from the supermarkets and so it will continue.
