Reports that a west end theatre show about sl avery will host two nights when only black people are allowed in. They are calling it blackout night. It's causing lots of debate. Is this a step forward or a step backwards? What's going on here guys. It's all over the news |

It's backwards. Surely we live in a world were we have progressed to stop segregation and seeing "colour".
Honestly, I find it cringe and how will someone define as being black? Are we going by a generation or tracing our heritage all the way back? Do we have a colour chart? I know plenty of "white looking" people who have a black parent / grandparent.
Just utterly bonkers. |

It's just two nights out of a run of thirty that are being dedicated to a black audience in a play that investigates themes about being black and the exploitation of black people.

Hmm, but would you feel the same if it was two nights dedicated to white peoples only? Only 2 nights out of 30, so that's ok?
That is my issue with it - it feels "othering" of people.

It's not about white people though. The comparison isn't apple's to apples.
I also think that as the artist has VERY successfully put a conversation about race into the public sphere in a very clever way.

I need educating what a "white gaze" actually is.
The idea of having a black only night doesn't bother me, as someone else said it's only two nights out of thirty and maybe there's some good intent behind it (or an effective publicity stunt).
It just don't get why it specifically mentions being free from the "white gaze" instead free from the non-black gaze (I'm assuming that Asians and other ethnicities can't identify as being black for the purposes of attending). |

I’m on the fence about it personally but I listened to a debate on this topic earlier today and I’m not sure Nick Ferrari is the best person to host a balanced debate but it is what it is.
I’d never heard the term ‘white gaze’ before this morning but in trying to understand why the creation of a ‘safe space’ was necessary the example given was that imagine it was a play about domestic violence and you’d want women to feel safe to absorb the content and discuss it on their way out etc (yes I know males are also DV victims). I guess practically it’s like meetings or culture workshops at work where they know staff won’t speak up or say things in front of their managers. |
