I feel somewhat biased here... I grew up near Chris (Martin) and am still reasonably close with his parents (I haven't seen or spoke to him for about 5 years though) and while I do find Coldplay intensely dull, I'm duty bound to like them!!

Although I'm not a fan of either band, they both have some good songs. They also both have their own distinctive style to the point that you can recognise that the song is one of theirs... so "characterless" is not a valid insult.
Ultimately, there are many bands & artists that I dislike MUCH more.

Definitely Coldplay- they win hands down not just for being the woodchip wallpaper of music, but mainly due to the smug preaching by Chris Cockwomble (or whatever his name is)...and he married Gwyneth Snatchcandle FFS.
Guy Garvey of The Elbow however is a much more interesting bloke, excellent radio show, keeps his general opinions to himself and had the good sense to bag himself Rachael Stirling (or Diana Rigg Jr for you older types), an all round fine woman!
Top Trumps to Elbow- they may not be the most exciting band around, but they're a different league to Coldplay |
