This reminds me of a visit to a petrol station in Luxor, not only was the forecourt a comunal meeting ground with every guy smoking, but the petrol was being dispensed by what looked like 8 year olds |

"I value my life and try to avoid dangerous things like people smoking in a petrol station in front of the pumps.
Have I gone mad or has common sense gone out the window. Yes I did tell her to put her cigarette out. "
That is as much the attendants fault in the booth. Petrol pumps don't automatically start pumping, it has to be authorised in the booth by a person, they should check for things like cigarettes before they push the button. |

"with you on this one .. oh and the mobile phones in use !! doh !! "
There is no danger from mobile phones, in the good old days when we had cb radios, we fitted massive amplifiers and used to transmit while filling the tanks, the cb radios used to interfere with the pumps making the readers run slow hence a full tankful for the equivilant of £10. That's why they ban mobile phones. |

Why is this a bad idea?
theres a spark when they go off which can ignight petrol fumes apparently"
It's a myth!
Nothing will happen if you use your mobile at a petrol station. |

Have to say I did wonder about it being accurate. |

My daughter was a passenger in a car at a petrol station, she forgot and answered her mobile. The attendant turned the petrol pump off and made an announcement over the microphone. My daughter was really embarressed she said as she's used to driving and wasn't at that time she just forgot. |

Apparently there was a chance of the signal from the mobile interfering with the digital read out on the pump, so getting more petrol than you've paid for |

There was a television experiment not so long ago ...
They filled a caravan with petrol canisters, soaked the benches etc.
Popped in 25 mobile phones, and rang them all at once
Not a thing happened |

Did they not prove static did cause it to go boom? I would run a mile if I saw someone filling up wearing a shell suit!

from somebody who has studied fire science, yes it is dangerous to use a mobile in a potentially explosive atmosphere.. they are not intrinsically safe! I have seen similar experiments and i knee that there would be no explosion because to much petrol was used.basically the atmosphere was to rich with petrol fumes! For combustion to occur you must have the right mixture of fuel, oxygen and heat!!
That is why your gas hob will not always ignite if you turn the gas on full blast before pressing the ignition button - the atmosphere is too rich with fuel (gas) !!!

Thats deffo true. Seen footage of people sliding out of the car seats and creating so much static they've created a spark and gone up in flames. |

Trust me, the amount of power we kicked out at petrol stations, if there was any chance of an explosion , we would have caused it. The pimps in question were avery hardoll mk iv pumps which are now obsolete. All pumps are shielded from radio signals. The notice is just in case it happens again, the companies hate losing money. |

It's still a rule you have to abide by in a petrol station so why do it? It's the interference the can cause with the pumps! |

No there an't, Mobile phones are water proof nowa days. and the exhaust pipes on the cars that drive in have 100s more higher heat levels. |

It is funny, the car pulling in on the otherside of the pump can easily have a bad cat converter at over a thousand degrees and be running onstar (essentially a mobile built into the car) and people dont think twice about that, lol. |

"no one has ever blown up a petrol station by smoking or using a mobile phone.
not once."
Emil Antonowsky blew one up using just a cigarette.
Mind you, that was in Robocop! |

"A cig isnt hot enough to ignite petrol vapour.. n the moblie phone thing about the phone sigal is a myth too
no it is not a myth, read my post above..
"
Your post refers to an experiment. Has there ever been a real life case?
What happens if I am walking past a petrol station and my phone rings or I'm having a fag - what is the risk then? |

Do you have a link for the science reports/journals that corroborate this, they'd be an interesting read? |

A garage forecourt is in the open air. You don't ever get an atmosphere rich enough in combustibles to create a hazard. Not without pouring a few gallons over the floor. The phone ban was merely over zealousness on the part of a health and safety "expert" who decided to err far too much on the side of caution. They need to do a fresh risk assessment of phone use.
I always get a large static shock when I shut my car door, if I have been wearing certain shoes. Never blown any forecourts up yet. |

I was getting petrol one day. I was inside the car and using my mobile phone. There was tanker delivering petrol. The driver went nuts when he saw me using my mobile phone. He said he would have to stop what he was doing. I am not saying you are wrong just what happened to me. |

Richard Coates, British Petroleum's fire safety officer, has investigated many of the 243 fires that over an 11-year period were attributed to mobiles. 'Mobile phones pose no petrol station hazard,' he said. 'There is nothing to worry about.' |

You would think it would be easy to adhere to wouldn't you?....after all it's only a few minutes out of your day to fill up with petrol. |

Oh and another little thing to think about, women wearing tights causing static as they slide out of the car can generate a spark that will ignite petrol fumes. Just something to think about lol |

I blame the petrol companies. They should KNOW that people are going to smoke at pumps, and therefore not sell the stuff at all. Now we apparrently need a check list at petrol stations: do you smoke? Are you smoking now? Are you likely to smoke before you have finished dispensing petrol? Are you stupid or selfish enough to try to blame someone else if you don't know not to smoke while handling petrol? Would you like the attendant to hold your hand for you? |
