Hi I am applying for a job and it’s paid under NJC payscale. The pay variance is spread over £10,000
This is considerable. Does anyone know if I was successful could I negotiate starting salary higher than lower scale?

Always negotiate in the way in, you rarely get another chance once you are in and on the bands/scales
Once it’s decided you are the right person for the role and have an offer then it’s time to negotiate. £10k is nothing to the hiring manager at this stage |

It’s a charity so the £10k might be an issue.
I’m seeking the £10k I’m seeking mid scale so £5k from bottom

Usually when a salary grade span is in place it will be structured according to specific job relevant capabilities. The more of those where you are able to demonstrate competence, then the higher up the scale your salary will be and this will be reviewed over agreed timescales.
Whilst it is great to be presenting yourself as highly competent at interview and therefore qualify for the highest salary in the bracket, this could also be viewed that you have no room to grow in the role and would move on quickly for greater development opportunity, so with this in mind, be careful of how much you big yourself up!
Realistically expect to be offered the lowest and negotiate to the middle at best but ask for a review after end of probationary period. |

I’m assuming you are not a charity though and you wish to be paid?
If the band for the role goes up to xyz and you have the right skill, ability and fit for the role, aim for the top. You may wish to settle for somewhere else.
My point is let them worry if the £10k is an issue. You don’t ask , you don’t get

It will depend entirely how much they want you how flexible they will be. From what I hear uk job marker is extremely candidate led right now compare to most countries , very easy to change jobs so go for the top.
One way to get above the scale offered, often much easier than negotiating within a scale for the top end, because it’s easier for the hirer to get approved a low range on a grade for a new starter , is make a strong case that your skills and experience are a level Higher. |

Hi I agree with regard private companies. But this is with a charity and they are not as flexible.
Their hands are tied within pay bands |
