Depends what sort of horror you are into I find the Asian subtitled films to be the best. They seem to have right balance between building the tension, characterisation and scares. I really enjoyed the audition it's very well shot in fact beautiful. Tale of two sisters, old boy and the red shoes to name just a few.

"Two French ones: Switchblade Romance and Martyrs."
I saw the end of Martyrs one night. Gos I've seen some gruesome things in my time but that was really gross. |

It is actually gruelling to watch, easily the most extreme thing we have ever seen. |

The ones we mentioned are definitely not!
If you want old school have a look at The Haunting from the early 1960s which absolutely drips with atmosphere and is actually pretty scary. Another high point of the film as art is The Shining which borders on genius in its sound editing and design.
PS little known fact: the carpet in Sids house in Toy Story has the same pattern as the one in the Overlook Hotel. |

I find the American films which are generally remakes of asian ones to be terrible no real character development.
I never quite understand how they can take a beautifuly filmed masterpiece and turn it into a run of the mill bland horror film.
Just my opinion although i do love old 70's n 80's western horror just not a fan of todays offerings.

The Japanese horror films are good, the grudge 1 & 2,they know how to play with the mind, other than that you're better off re watching the classics.
The Ruins and The Orphan were good for modern horror |
