After having a rubbish day yesterday someone overheard a conversation between me and my colleague and offered to pay for our lunch to cheer us up. We obviously protested but they insisted. It was a genuinely lovely interaction with a stranger and it worked. We spent the rest of the evening with a smile on our faces

Yes. A complete stranger stopped and changed my tyre for me once, when I was alone on Cannock chase in the snow, with a flat.
So many cars drove past.
I had just got out and seen it and was resting my head on the roof of the car in defeat, when my knight in armour stopped.
Wouldn't give me his details so I could send him remuneration either. |

Yes, when I was travelling through Australia, with my partner at the time.
We got chatting to a man on a scuba diving course, who was from Sydney. We told him we were going to be in Sydney for Christmas. He didn't want us to spend Christmas alone, so invited us to stay at his with his family over the Christmas period. At the time we thought it was a passing comment but he then messaged us 2 weeks before to say my offer still stands, so we took him up on it.
As strange as it was spending Christmas day with complete strangers, we had an incredible time and he took me out on his sailing yacht on boxing day, for his lads annual jolly boys outing, watching the Sydney to Hobart race |

We try and do that if there’s still a lot of time left on the ticket. If we can't, we usually leave it on the machine and hope the next person spots it. Sometimes it’s the little things that make your life that bit easier. |

This used to be a regular thing in the early days of pay & display and before all the cameras were installed.

I was a student, hitching from one town to another in Germany. I couldn't get a lift, and eventually trudged through the snow back into town and spent money I didn't want to spend on a train to the next town. I got off onto a deserted platform and closed station just outside the town. Mid winter, thick fog (couldn't see further than the next streetlamp), 10pm, outside a deserted town I didn't know. My crappy little map showed the youth hostel on the other side of town. I wandered out into the road looking forlorn, when a hobo came up and asked me if I needed to get to the hostel (clearly I wore it like a badge). He flagged down a bus, spoke to the driver, got on with me, showed me where to get off, and wished me goodnight. And didn't ask for a pfennig! You've no idea how grateful I was for that assistance! |

In a theme park in the US and a family who were heading home that day still had 4 meals on their dining pass so they invited us to order what we wanted off the menu and they "paid" for it all at the till with their pass.
Never saw them before that and all I know is that they were from New York. |

I absolutely love this.. I've never been on the end but I have been the one to make the gesture from time to time..
Doesn't have to be something massive either, and it really does turn someone's terrible day and who knows what horrors they're thinking about, to them having their opinion on humanity restored.. Even if only temporarily..
If more people did this the world would be a much better place. |
