I read the news and it said that teachers get new guidance as ministers ban mobile phones in schools as ministers have moved ahead with a pledge to ban mobile phones.
It also suggests that staff could search pupils and their bags for mobile phones if necessary,
I think that it is a good idea that they have finally decided that they will ban mobiles phones in schools, because it would improve their learning and it also shows respect to the teachers as well.
What is your view about it and is it a good idea? |

So one option they suggested was kids to leave phones at home, so how does that help form a safety perspective if the kid is walking home in the dark
Kids have no respect for teachers these days if they did they would leave their phones in the world bags and not be on them in lessons |

Sadly the usual smoke and mirrors from this government
“As most schools already have policies in place to deal with the problems of mobile phone use this guidance will make little difference and is a distraction from the many problems facing education.” |

I don’t agree with a total ban - what about children who walk or get the bus to school? I’d personally feel safer knowing my child can contact me if they need to in those situations.
Will the ban extend to teachers and LAs I wonder? |

Nope they specifically said pupils |

Good idea in principle but it's going to be so hard for the teachers to monitor.
Teachers get a hard enough time from certain kids and parents anyway, taking phones off them will probably cause more issues.

Don't think they are banning children from having them just not allowed on or use during the school day.
If parents need to contact children during this time all they have to do is call the school. |

If they keep them in their bags i dont see the problem. Now if they use them in ckass then the teacher shoukd take it until the end of the day. But searching for them could bring up all kinds of problems. |

Kids DO NOT need mobile phones on them to get to / from school, or through the day. It's a recent phenomena that should have been dealt with as the technology emerged.

I can see why this has came about, but what if a child has been targeted whilst alone between lessons or at break times. They can't contact their parents or friends to tell them what happened.. as a teacher myself I know children can be hesitant about talking to teachers about bullying.
I think maybe have them stored in a box at the back of the class or in their own lockers whilst in lessons is enough. And obviously having a significant, but fair, consequence in place for those that don't leave their phones behind so it doesn't happen again. |

Bullies have existed since the beginning of time and the only way to deal with them is to stand up to them, mobile phones are the bane of life theyve become an integral part of everyones day but kids need to focus on their lessons, i think its a good thing they put their phone in a box at the beginning of the day and get it back at the end or are they advocating not taking them in fullstop? |

We had an incident a few weeks ago where one of our kids did an after school class and missed the final bus home. If they didn't ring us we wouldn't of known. Gone are the days of asking the member of staff on reception to ring parents.
Doing a blanket ban on mobile phones won't achieve anything apart from making parents more anxious about their kids coming home safely |

If it not in at Act of parliament, it’s It’s the government waffling and wasting time because they can’t solve the proper problems of the UK. Smart schools already have this in hand, other schools should focus on getting better governors or a new head |

As a mum of a teenager at secondary school, I don’t think they should ban phones for a variety of reasons. If they provided a locker for before and after school I think that would work well.
But no I don’t think they should be banned completely from experienced we’ve encountered. |

We already have a ban, as do many many schools. They're confiscated for a day if seen. Works really well. If parents urgently need to contact them or child them then they go to the office (or realistically the toilets). It has reduced bullying behaviour so been a success (as well as them not getting lost as much).
My school has almost 3000 pupils on a tiny site. Lockers wouldn't work. If they are in the bags and not seen then that's good. Outside the school gates, no problem.
There is no need to have them on in school. |

How about they teach responsible phone use instead of a ban ( which would be impossible to police ) .
Also bearing in mind most secondary schools require the use of their phone for some school work |

Utter crap. This government has tragically underfunded and messed with it education system and they don’t think this stupid policy will do anything to change that they’re just trying to keep people happy.
Having family that have worked in education from school improvement, teachers to SLT and having worked in a school myself, I assure you, this government are not doing enough to improve education as a whole or the opportunities for various demographics to succeed. |

"Mobile phones are not needed in schools "
If the kid has diabetes there's now apps which can be monitored by them and I think a close circle, parents etc..
Other than medical and exceptional domestic etc, turn them off at the school door and on as they exit.. |

I agree. Don’t see why a teacher needs to search a student for it. If it’s not out in lessons, which they aren’t because schools have rules about this, then it’s fine. Also pretty useful and arguably essential in the modern world to have one travelling to and from school to keep in contact with parents. |

How did any of us ever get by without cellphones at school? Also, why the Heck do parents need contact with their kids when they're actually in school? They should just allow teachers to confiscate phones and leave it at that. |

I don't agree with the kids being searched. My eldest's school has brought a ban in but it's a ban on having them out at school. The kids can have them on them but not to be used during school hours, if they are seen, they are confiscated and we have to collect them. Seems to be working perfectly fine.
A lot of kids travel to school alone and with the lack on payphones now, kids need a way to contact their parents to and from school. |

"no one under 16 should have a smart phone, we need a complete ban to under 16s on social media.
Kids can get by with an old nokia."
I tend agree kids taking camera phones cameras into school and being able to live stream stuff shouldn't be allowed.
A basic text and call phone should suffice.
I'd imagine more kids get attacked now than pre mobiles I mean some of them are walking around with phones worth a grand plus, throw in a smart watch and a laptop that's pretty much saying "mug me"
Of course children need to be safe , noone is saying they shouldn't but do they really need a phone that's worth asking much as some people's cars? |

"How did any of us ever get by without cellphones at school? Also, why the Heck do parents need contact with their kids when they're actually in school? If a child doesn’t turn up to school but has left out in the morning parents can call them. If something happens on the way to or from school they can call them. If there’s an emergency and there’s a change of plan for their journey home or the evening, they can contact them. All stuff that happens in life. Why would a school need to search kids for devices if said devices aren’t being used? As in if I don’t have it out why are you searching me? Feels stupid. Why are kids not allowed devices outside of the classroom. How is that improving their learning? And schools don’t allow phones out during lessons this isn’t a film.

Agreed with all points. Times have changed and we are now reliant on phones for daily life. I’d rather my daughter have her phone it’s there if she needs it, it’s safe in her bag turned off for the duration of school. |

Even an old technology dinosaur as myself knows that the world we live in has moved on in pretty much every aspect whereby an old Nokia is about as much use as tits on a fish..
Homework, ordering school lunches that are safe for kids with dietary needs, paying for the bus if there's an issue with a car, medical conditions..
The digital age and how the kids at school use tech is progressing at a pace that going back to tech that's essentially not fit for purpose in this time isn't viable.. |

I used to carry a phonecard for emergency use in a payphone. Payphones are essentially non existent nowadays, so we're not exactly comparing like with like. And yes, I occasionally had to use my phonecard to call my parents for help, e.g. when the bus broke down and no replacement was provided home from town. |

No teacher wants to search a pupil. Confrontation from the child often and perhaps the same from the parent who bemoans lack of human rights ect ect. I'm afraid if your child is bullying another through phone use then you can be sure you'll be checked. So much of staff time is spent dealing with improper use, bullying, filming fights ect that occur out of school on buses ect. This then of course is brought into school hence the need to search.
No one wants to do this. There's a million other things as a teacher i should be doing. As long as there's misuse it needs to happen. And it's not bc pupils aren't taught about how to use phones safely. They have countless sessions, assemblies ect on proper use of technology to safeguard.
Have them off in school sure. But if there is reason to think harmful material (bullying, self harm, breaches of privacy ect) is on it then without a doubt it's in the interests of everyone to check. That's to safeguard all. |

all the things you mentioned have got to be sorted by the parent, not the child. the child shouldn't need camera phones or the internet to sort out anything, that's the parents job.
You sound naïve, I've been around since the inception of the internet, I know its risks, I've seen countless people being scammed and more. The internet is something kids need to be taught how to use/navigate. And like driving, they need to be old enough to engage in it. I'm up for a ban and restrictive controls.
I work in IT and understand internet security, the question is, do you?

Assuming your response is to my post above ( as you haven't mastered the reply and quote function).
How does a child with diabetes monitor their condition on an old Nokia?
How do they pay for a ticket on a bus if they've no cash on an old Nokia, as an IT person can a parent do this if they're elsewhere?
Whilst the general points you've wandered off into are important in this digital age they're not part of the debate, that you've decided I'm naive because of something not being discussed is interesting..
A naive person is one who perhaps ignores the reality that whilst phones should be off going into the school and on when leaving there are exceptions that are important for some in the school..
Some of which help the school concentrate on their core role rather than looking for child X who only has an old Nokia but whose parent can see on the app that the child's blood sugar is not good..

Same answer for both, use the current legacy systems that we have, we dont need a smart phone to solve those problems.
I'm keeping to the main point which is do we agree if ministers ban smart phones and I agreed and elaborated.
Purely on a safeguarding matter, children shouldn't be online by themselves, and we need to design systems that do not require them to have them. |

Soan old Nokia can be designed/ updated to facilitate an app commonly found on a smart phone eg. Diabetes? |

It's a great idea as children shouldn't have phones anyway as the radiation and other factors interfere with brain function. They can't have social media before 13 either but people ignore everything for an easy life and it's wrong.

I went to a university seminar room once where they had installed a picture ledge at the front of the room. Everyone put their phone on the ledge on silent. You could see your phone, no worry about it being taken.
Seemed like a great idea.
I’m glad kids have phones these days. Before I got a phone half way through school, I spent more than one occasion sat at a remote bus stop in the countryside for the whole day because the bus hadn’t turned up and my parents had dropped me off on their way to work. |

There is a school that has a very strict policy on mobile phones.
Leave it in your locker during lessons, if it is seen during lessons, then the phone is confiscated for a week. The parent talking about this, was in full support of it as well. |

It is another curse of the modern world, the responsibility for the use of the phone lies with the child and the parents and most deffo should not be allowed during lesson times, a lot of ideas here are just not practical, ie the cost of employing someone to take in all the phones, knowing who they belong too then handing them back at the end of the day, lots are going to miss a bus. I for one would not want a teacher groping my child searching for a hidden phone they might have hidden them in their knicks. Discipline in phone use would be good thing to learn at school for later transfer into the work place the cost of lost working time must run into mega billions. |

Teachers wouldn't physically frisk students like at airport security. We can only ask students to empty out bags/pockets really. That's what searching might entail. It's far too time consuming to do that every day for the average size secondary school and so it's completely non sensical to even suggest it. The best possible solution is to provide lockers where phones and other items are to be left upon arrival (monitored with CCTV to minimise issues of theft etc) and for students to collect phones at the end of the day. It's too time consuming to expect teachers to collect in and reissue phones at the start/end of lessons and because students move around from room to room, that is exactly what would be required.
I think a total ban would be unworkable. I also don't want phones causing a distraction in lessons or used to bully etc. |

I would have thought that denying the kids their phones would create resentment. Surely incorporating cell phones into the educational environment is better.

Indeed. The person who couldn't resist the irony of reusing it is aware of its original and now outdated formal use. He probably wouldn't have used it out of preference.
However, as it has long been replaced as a medical term in most people's living memory, it can surely now be considered freed up safely for continued use colloquially, essentially similarly to the way 'moron' has become?
As many love to say on here "Language evolves". Eh?
Please forgive me for seizing such a golden opportunity to turn things around on this current contentious subject. |

"How did any of us ever get by without cellphones at school? Also, why the Heck do parents need contact with their kids when they're actually in school? They should just allow teachers to confiscate phones and leave it at that." This and I also wonder how we ever got by without mobile phones at school back then |

"I wonder if anyone using the word "cretin" knows what it actually means and why it's not the best choice of word? "
I googled it thinking perhaps it had changed meaning. I love learning about words.

"Sadly the usual smoke and mirrors from this government
“As most schools already have policies in place to deal with the problems of mobile phone use this guidance will make little difference and is a distraction from the many problems facing education.”"

"Banning phones but using iPads too do all there work what happened too pen and paper hypocrites"
What is hypocritical about wanting to teach young people the technology that they're likely to encounter in the adult world? |

I think its silly. I had mobile phone when I was in high school and wasn't an issue or distraction.
What is needed is respectful children, stricter teachers and better parenting. I.e. if your phone gets taken away due to misuse the parents need to step up.
Lots of children use their phone to get to school / use mobile app to track the bus - amount of times the bus hasn't turned up and they need to find alternative arrangement to attend school is an issue especially in rural areas.
They use it sometimes in lesson as they have school email/ research/ educational apps/ library/ homework / after school clubs. School has become very digitalised since "back in the day when I survived without a phone". |
