RIP Steve Wright
Jump to: Newest in thread
Wow, that is sad to hear, hadn’t listened to him much in recent years but he was a staple in the 80’s 90’s and 00’s.
Loved his characters Sid, Mr Angry and that guy from the Asaldo Cinema Complex and Ask Elvis was just a stroke of genius. Very very sad. |

Such a huge loss...
Way ahead of everyone else...made it all sound so effortless..
I remember rushing home from school in 1981-83 just to hear the last half hour of his show when his Radio 1 afternoon show was on from 2.00-4.30pm.
Then listened to him throughout my working life..
Just the most funny show with funny characters on his zany madcap show.
Absolute genius...
RIP Wrighty |

Sid the manager and fillet of fish, that was a very long time ago. 1989/90. When Radio One was called 1FM for a while.
Then I found him again, on Radio 2.
Afternoons, were never the same after this era came to an end.
His last introduction and sign off.

I was sad and shocked to hear of Steve’s passing … another legend gone - god I feel my age!
Steve has been with me since my early teens … I guess I’ve kinda grown up with him .. my favourite ‘Radio uncle’. From the afternoon show on Radio 1, the Radio 1 roadshow, through to Pick of the Pops and Love Songs … I listened to them all.
I listened to both Sarah Cox and Jo Whilley last night, and found myself welling up as they read the tributes and memories- many of them mirroring my own. I could hear the heartbreak in their voices as they tried, sometimes unsuccessfully, to hold back the tears. Well done to them, that must have been so hard!
RIP uncle.

I don’t want to speak ill of the dead and I wish him no ill will but his radio show was one of the reasons I stopped listening to Radio One in the mid-80’s. It was a time when the music came second to the DJ’s ego and they thought that they were bigger than the bands whose music they played.
I send condolences to his family, friends and colleagues and RIP. |

My thoughts exactly.
His shows were the start of a really poor radio era which is still going on today.
DJs are entirely superfluous, the shows should be 100% music without any chat or stupid quizzes etc.
I suspect radio stations only employ DJs because they are cheaper than paying royalties on music. |

You have your opinion.
Personally if I wanted to listen to just music then I have plenty of that of my own.
I listen to the wireless because I don’t want just music.
I want entertainment, with good music thrown in.
Steve Wright was a master at this, entertainment at its best when I listened in the 80’s 90’s and 00’s
The fact I can remember characters and catch phrases from 40 years ago but have forgotten most of the music from then, tells me a lot.
Today I enjoy listening to Simon Mayo, he too has a very good interaction with his audience which extends far beyond simply the music he plays. |

Isn't that what music streaming services are for? |

I've got a factoid for you.
Steve Wright (no, no, no, no, not Wrighty! Tim...Janey! I'm talkin' about another bloke with the same name)...
This Steve Wright Is a composer and multi-instrumentalist who wrote and performed the theme tune for Brookside/Brookie along with Dave Roylance.
He also did Hollyoaks and Grange Hill's tunes, when he was Phil Redmond's Head of Music at Mersey Television, from 1982-2005 and then Lime Pictures 2005-2008
He was born in Liverpool and he has been involved in music since the age of seven and his CV includes the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, PolyGram, Universal, Fremantle Media etc.

Wrighty did like his factoids, were they all from the Metro, or was it just the odd one or two?

I love music but i also love all the chatting and quizzes and all the other stuff that makes up a show.
I'm often on my own all day, i have ill health, sometimes the radio presenter is the only voice i hear chatting until my other half comes home from work, there are loads of people who are on their own far more than me, Steve Wright probably cheered them up and made them feel less lonely.
If i only want to hear music then i stream it. |
