Today I voluntarily helped friends move house, driving the van and generally helping.

I offered in the spirit of friendship, when we were finished they wanted to pay me which of course I refused. This offended my friends so after much discussion I accepted the money.

I now feel guilty having been the one who initially offered my help.

How should I have handled the situation?

Go kick down the door, then give the money back for them to get someone to fix it

You were right to take the money even though you offered, if you don't want to keep it, maybe buy them a welcome to your new home gift or take them out for a meal, save them cooking

We have moved house a few times with friends help, they offered like you did but we still gave them something for helping us.

We did it to ensure the help if we ever moved again . So dont take offense to it at all, as someone suggested if you feel strong enough get them a house warming gift.
