The Worst Case Scenario

Digging a bit deeper into overthinking, but if something is out of your control and you're waiting on the outcome, do you immediately assume the worst? And if so, do you plan a response to the worst news occurring even if you don't know that news isn't the worst?

If you don't, what stops your mind immediately going there? Are you just optimistic or do you find distractions in the meantime?

Yes, i immediately think the worst. But most of the time the result is the best result possible! Our brains love to sabotage us for no reason.

I try to be more optimistic nowadays. Since the start of the new year I’ve been trying to view things differently. I’ve also been learning how to let things go. Whatever God has in store for me, I’m ready to take it on

I'm pretty good at finding either a positive solution or a positive way to think about something.I don't enjoy feeling stressed about things I have no control over

I kinda do expect the worst but don’t plan scenarios in case it happens. I did in the past and I couldn’t cope well with that.

Instead, I somehow push it to the back of my head, and if I really need to get there, I’d use the CBT technique called “worry time “. I’d say to myself “I’ll worry about it at 7pm tonight, but only for 10 minutes.” It seems to work so far.

Hope you are well OP.

It's natural to think of the worst, but what is out of control is not worth dwelling on for too long. And usually, it's not the worst case scenario in the end

All over

A great question OP. The truth is that can vary. Stressing in anticipation of something bad might happen isn't good but I am sure lots of us do from time to time. On the other hand if you have a recovery plan in place if the worst happens, it gives you more confidence to deal with adversity when it does.

I’m quite logical so I prepare for the worst but hope for the best. The only moment that I can change is the one I’m living so I don’t dwell on maybes until they happen.

I don't tend to assume the worst. I do have several back up plans, though - I'd rather have a plan and not need it than not have a plan.

La la land

I have a tendency to plan for the worst, but then I've had some pretty awful stuff happen to me. But generally I know I've survived those times and I will again. That gives me reassurance.

Did you ever watch game of thrones? When littlefinger says to Sansa that he likes to play a little game. And he likes to imagine the worst reasons a person has for doing something. And then Sansa uses it on him? That loves in my head rent free.

Pretty much this. My mind tends to naturally imagine the likely outcomes and have a few plans in place.

I'll reserve excitement for when things happen, and rarely feel disappointment if they don't.

It gets in the way of the next plan .

I like the ideas of it being more about preparing for the worst to avoid disappointment. Can you find that the preparation can lead a bit to overthinking it even further until the actual outcome occurs? At what point does it go past preparation?

My instant reaction goes to catastrophe! But my brain pretty quickly jumps into action. I learnt a few years ago to 'let go of worry' as it resolves nothing and doesn't change the outcome in any way.

I might try and get put together an optimistic plan if i have a feeling something might go south

Sometimes, yes. Multiple scenarios swirling around my head. That's when I need to remind myself to go one step at a time. I've done what I can in making back up plans, all I can do now is go with it.

I tend to try and plan the best possible response for the worst outcome.

I’ll usually have 2 back up plans for other outcomes.

I am unfailingly optimistic though.

But I have to be, because if I don’t have the plans in place then I can spiral quite easily.

Somewhere out there

For me, I don't worry about the worse case scenario until I need to! If it's medical, I'd rather find out the results before making any decisions on anything including telling friends, family etc!

I’m an optimist at heart, but also a worrier.

I plan for the worst and hope for the best. It usually means things work out ok.

Always prepare for the worse case scenario, just in case.

I'm a worrywart and have to talk to myself about what may or may not happen; then tell myself I'll deal with it.

distraction for me. that's one of the reasons why I love enm. if one goes off the boil then there is always someone else. if it's bad news but not in the romance department then I still think distraction is your best option. the outcome is what it is so why dwell?

with one foot out the door

I spent 3 years worrying over something out of my control that worry turned to fear and that fear created the reality i feared the most

Until i learned of the circle of control

Everything in it i can worry about everything out of it iv learned to emoty my mind about when fear strikes

I like to deal with facts and evidence. If things are out of my hands, I may make a quick assessment of probabilities but there's nothing more I can do. If an outcome may be huge but no preparation is necessary or helpful, I enjoy letting go of something. It's wonderful to be free, whilst you truly are.

I'm quite realistic if there's multiple possible outcomes I consider them all and not just focus on the most negative one.

However I do tend to compartmentalize and push the situation to the back of my head and not worry about it until I actually need to deal with it.

If something is genuinely out of my control then I don’t tend worry about it - it is going to be what it is going to be.

I am generally a realist and I feel I have a reasonably accurate feel for probabilities so I will have prepared beforehand if something was highly damaging (or if there was a large upside).

I wouldn’t worry about it until it happens. I would probably try and make the outcome as good for me as possible.

I think its quite common to immediately assume the worst. I tend to do that then go through all he other possibilities, make a plan for the worst case, prepare for it and then try to put it on hold

Truly out of your control like the results of medical test or job interview ?

How you deal with the results is totally within your control. Having a strategy, buffers, support in place & positive attitude for life’s uncertainty is essential. Once you got that, Que Sera, Sera, read a book or something to take you mind off the waiting.
