This is a VERY boring thread, soz. But I need some help. I have a 10 year old diesel. I have the opportunity to buy a 6 yo hybrid for a third of the resale price. Should I, as I will get a better car for the money than I could normally afford? And pre-empt any major issues with my diesel as it gets older.

I haven't actually ever bought a car for myself. All the cars I've had have been bought by a partner or passed onto me by family.

My advice is you'll be sitting waiting forever to charge your hybrid is life not more precious?

If its just a hybrid, it won't need charged.

It would all depend on your budget and what make and model this hybrid car is?

My budget probably would have been about £5k a few years in the future. My diesel is worth about that now from a basic online check. The hybrid is a Kia Niro.

well i saw a guy and his partner i guess sat in their car for what seemed like hours the other day i just wouldn't have the patience to wait, so I'll wait until its an established proposition to have electric, i mean the other thing is they are also very expensive to repair somebody was telling me he paid £330 for a tyre the other day the cars are lighter why would the tyres be more expensive, all they've done is changed the propulsion system

Hi,

Is it a plugin hybrid or just self charging.

One of the things to watch out on an old EV/hybrid is how much the batteries have degraded in terms of the amount of charge they hold.

If you are just pottering around doing a few miles at a times a hybrid may make more sense than a diesel, especially and older diesel.

Do you live or travel in an area that has a ULEZ?

It's not an electric though. It's a hybrid so it charges differently from what I can gather. I've literally just had an offer of this car yesterday.

Thank you -those are good questions. I will find out if it's plug-in or self-charging. It's done 36k miles which doesn't seem a lot for a 6yo car.

No I don't have ULEZ to content with.

Hmm. If so I figured I can plug it in at Lidl whilst I do my weekly shop. Naively I suspect.

I have a self charging hybrid.

I get 72 mpg.

I did find that insurance on hybrids is higher than petrol/diesel.

I've got a hybrid and it's probably the best 'alround' car I've ever had.

You have the efficiency of battery power for local journeys and diesel power for long journeys.

The best of both worlds

Thank you for that. As I mentioned before I've never bought a car or chosen one so it's a new game for me!
