I don't get it. As I understand it the Cardinals pray to God for guidance for who to choose as the new Pope.If that's the case, how comes the vote isn't always unanimous?

I am catholic before anyone starts on me!!!

The Vatican is the largest marijuana factory in the world. The last pope had a massive whitey, hence the smoke. He's now absolute shit faced and they can smoke no more their session has now officially ended. Due to the whitey they have no choice but to appoint someone who is more capable of having a proper session. Lol.

Now off to confession. No doubt lots of hail Marys and prayers to say as I repent my sins?!!

The last pope abdicated on 28th of February, only the second time in history. Because he abdicated they had to get a new one. We now have a new one to replace the abdicated one so now we have one

So we have a Latin American pope. It is good for the Catholic church to be moving into a new era.

Its a shame that, if you believe or don't so many feel the need to mock religion so openly when lots rely so much on what it offers.

You will find that on this site which is the source of tons of un, banter and good natured teasing there is sometimes an element of lack of respect when it comes to things like religion. Lets face it.. people can believe what they like, other people can challenge the beliefs. Nothing wrong with that.

Mocking however, in my books of religion or beliefs or other people's opinion is not ok really.

But surely if your a none believer its the same as having a banter about different football teams

How many people die every year over football?

How many die over religion?

How many have died with nothing to do with either"

That's a complete red herring.

The posts I replied to were about football and religion.

Its a shame that, if you believe or don't so many feel the need to mock religion so openly when lots rely so much on what it offers.

Many an aethist starts praying once the rounds are incoming !

The old "there are no atheists in foxholes" argument.

which is palpable nonsense

You'd have to have been living in a cave recently to not know about the sexual predators that are rife within the Catholic Church. That's my problem with it. To protect itself the Vatican have been systematically sweeping under the carpet these deviant priests within it's brotherhood. The worst offenders have been packed off to new parishes in the middle of nowhere where nobody knows of them - or of their pasts. Just this week the Catholic Church in the USA has agreed to pay $9MILLION in compensation to some of the victims of it's priests.

When the Vatican decides to hold a transparent inquiry - and make it's findings public - into it's entire worldwide priesthood and excommunicate those priests it uncovers as sexual perverts, then maybe it will earn my respect. I will never be a believer in God though, but then I don't believe that a person's faith in God and a person's religion are necessarily the same thing.

Let's. Dear Pope, I know you have taken a vow of celibacy and disapprove of sex outside of marriage, but I wonder what you think of my predeliction for sexual enjoyment with multiple partners of either sex and whether this might prohibit my entry via the pearly gates when I finally pass away! At that level they're all well versed in Latin. Most cardinals have spent time in Rome over the years and have a working knowledge of Italian, and many of them are multilingual anyway. Many of the languages spoken in South America are Latin-based languages too, so you'll often find a Spaniard or an Italian speaking with a Brazilian or an Argentine and both are easily understood by the other.

"What I want to know is how will he communicate with all his colleagues at the Vatican?

Do they they all speak Italian?

Also how do that get the smoke to turn from black to white so quickly?

These are genuine albeit stupid questions?! "

His father was Italian and I think it is the lingua franca. He's also chosen Francis, the communication saint.

I thought they have two chimneys - one with the black smoke cartridges and one with the white but they feed into the same external chimney - which is why it's not immediately white.

"As ever if your uncomfortable, don't understand or dislike you mock ... wouldn't be allowed if it was another religion.

Good luck and blessings to my new Pope, Francis I. May God guide him on his new journey

Happy New Pope to you!

I wonder what his _iews on swinging are???

Shall we ask him?

Let's. Dear Pope, I know you have taken a vow of celibacy and disapprove of sex outside of marriage, but I wonder what you think of my predeliction for sexual enjoyment with multiple partners of either sex and whether this might prohibit my entry via the pearly gates when I finally pass away! Should this behaviour, which I can assure you is bloody great fun (some of your colleague can probably testify), mean I go to hell, can you let me know what might be in store. Many thanks.

I think we need to ask how long we have to languish in purgatory and what remission we get for going on pilgrimage. We might wipe out the discount if it's a swing tour pilgrimage though.

I think you and I should get together and head over to Rome to put these important theological questions to the main man. "

That sounds like a plan - I'll get my hat.

The external chimney stack is removed after each conclave. This is for two reasons: 1) to prevent debris falling into it and preventing the smoke from emerging the colour it is intended to be, and 2) the roof of St Pauls is a tourist attraction in itself (we've been on it when we honeymooned in Rome and there's even a café up there!) so they obviously don't want a bunch of johnny foreigners fucking things up by messing about with the chimney.

Just out of interest, as a non believer, did you feel anything spiritual at all when at St Peters?

I agree but I would also want to question what the difference is. It is easier to take the mickey out of something you are more familiar with, the nuance is better understood. Perhaps when Islam is as familiar and well understood we'll feel able to be just as irreverent and tolerate that.

I think you are more than likley right although why its more easily accepted to poke a catholic than a muslim kingpin eludes me.

To get the ball rolling again....lol

I think the majority of the posts were aimed at religion in general rather than Catholicism exclusively. That said, the Catholic church is a pretty easy target right now for all of the scandals mentioned previously.

So we have the first Jesuit Pope..??

Bet Dan Brown's laughing all the way to the bank and writing the first three chapters of his new book over that one, and Opus Dei must be burning their sackcloth knickers in protest tonight...

Thank God I'm an Atheist!

Nope. Didn't feel a thing. The Whispering Gallery at the base of the Dome was cool though, I got Siren to stand on the opposite side to me and whisper something - and I heard what she said! Then we walked up the inside of the Dome to the top, it is double skinned so you actually walk up INSIDE the actual Dome wall, and as it's a dome you walk up it leaning sideways the higher up you go until you emerge at the top where you can see the whole of Rome, almost. It's a really neat building, but as for feeling 'God', nah, he was out.

I've forgotten half of what I used to know and the other half gets harder to remember as the years go by. It usually leaps to the fore when someone mentions something relating to it.

They are 'extreme priests' - will work anywhere and the harder the conditions the better. The Society of Jesus is an all male order of the Catholic Church, usually known for education.

There are two main (and generally opposing) 'extreme' (but we ain't talking Muslim-type extreme) factions in the Roman Catholic Church: The Jesuits (The Society of Jesus) and Opus Dei (a bit like the a Catholic S.A.S who just lurrrrve a bit of self-inflicted pain).

'Gentile' Roman Catholics will be watching very closely over the next few months to see what direction this pontificate is going. The Jesuits don't take prisoners.... literally!

Be very interesting to listen to James O'Brien on LBC tomorrow about this - as he went to a Jesuit boarding school, he has an interesting 'take' on it all.....

I have met many a poor man to have been raised by the Jesuits. Some of the stories I have heard make me weep just to recall them.
