A Mum from Scotland sent her young daughter to school with ponytails or pigtails or whatever they call it in that country. A midday assistant or teaching assistant changed the hair into plaits at lunch and the mum was reportedly furious when the child got home. Would this outrage the fab mums or just harmless. What's going on here. It's all over the Daily Record, which is Scotland's equivalent of the New York Times .. what's going on here guys ?

"Where's Scotland Tom?"

And what's it best known for?

It sounds unusual but maybe the child was interested in having them done and the assistant could do it well. It's not seemingly something against any moral code?

Depends if there was a valid reason for it.

I’d ask first before blowing my top.

Scotland is best known for not cowering to the Romans whilst the English cowered like frightened dogs

Why did the staff member change it

I cut our sons hair like David Beckham's once and his teacher said he had to change it. God alone knows why because it wasn't interfering with his learning in any way. I cut it though because school is hard enough

We’re a very divided country what you never see is that a lot of people here believe we should bring back beatings for kids. That attitude still remains within some of our teachers

Kids play. Their hair falls out of the style. They ask the staff to put the bobbles back in. They might say "Ooh, I'm good at plaits, would you like that?" and the child says yes. How the fuck is this a news story?

We've not met a single educator who advocates beating children. Unless they're joking..... It's not a thing.

If I was a teacher in this Scotland place, I would take my clippers in & the children of Millennials showing off trying to be individuals would all get a number one.

Does it matter? Really? And with the newspapers I can pretty much guarantee that wasn’t the whole story.

I guess nothing else is happening in Scotland, if that was the biggest fucking headline of the day.

Tom was caned at school on the backside. Wooden ruler on the hands and blackboard wooden dusters thrown at him. it did Tom no harm. Teachers need to keep order

My son who is in his 30s now had long hair in high school and the school said he had to have his hair cut short as it was health and safety hazard as if he flicked his head it may go in someone's eye... So I said when all the girls had their hair cut short he will too...

Whaley Bridge,Nr Buxton,

I know a few teachers who advocate a clip round the ear,but because someone hasn't met any, they don't exist.

When I was at school the haircut the teachers most feared was the 'skinhead'.Anyone with hair deemed too short was sent home until it it grew to an 'acceptable' length. No surprise that kids got skinhead haircuts.....

What on earth has that got to do with putting plaits into hair?

Julie would suggest that it probably harmed Tom more than he would admit if it is still so clear in his memory.

woodwork and metalwork teacher throwing whatever tool was at hand.Pottery teacher throwing clay didn't have the same effect, probably why he was stabbed.

Perhaps the memory is there are consequences if you don't behave.Or is that an old fashioned concept.

I work in education. Control through fear is so ineffective compared to connection and mutual respect. Violence to children is an old-fashioned concept and it deserves to be.

The children control the schools, the prisoners control the prisons, the gangs control the streets..

All goes back to these liberal types banning the cane

I never mentioned violence just consequences for misbehaviour.Real consequences, not a session of gardening therapy with Hermione and Jasper, the social workers.Fear of consequences is effective. We feared our teachers(cane),we behaved. We feared the local 'copper'(clip round the ear, parents informed),we behaved. We feared our parents discipline,we behaved.

They 'know' best.No consequences, so the kids think there are no consequences for anything. No surprise kids now carry blades, because they know all they will get is sympathy, excuses for there behaviour. They wouldn't know respect if it fell on them.

Tom...it's happening...like liquid lycanthropy...Jekyll to Hyde...:

Cane...Kane...Khane...Khan..

Khan!

KHAN!

Now we know who's to blame, and it was hiding in your fucked-up fragmented consciousness of Victoriana English discipline all along.

Good thing you're a humorous literary creation rather than a real person.

Such dinosaurs are on the road to a painful extinction of their own making .

Just exactly when was this Golden era of policing?

If a kid was doing something wrong, why didn’t the police officer actually do something official rather than beat them? I don’t know? Say, arrest them or summons them for an offence?

If it didn’t warrant that, why not simply inform the parents rather than assault them first?

Do you remember that in the original film, “Dixon of Dock Green” the police officer was murdered?

I would suggest that increasing disrespect for law and order is unlikely to be linked to a lack of illegal assaults by police officers.
