Do I look Spanish? I’m getting a myriad of messages asking if I am today! I’m not. Not that I’m implying that there’s anything wrong if I was. Just bemused that a) people approach in that way and b) that you wouldn’t start from the assumption I’m simply British.
Have you ever been asked if you’re another nationality? Or an assumption re something similar? |

"Oh boy, yes I have .
Also I wouldn’t say you look Spanish. Guessing ethnicity is too difficult for me though. I can only figure it out by accents. "
I get bored of White people not accepting I’m British as an answer. But also other Black peoples often guess that my family are from West Africa. And like- I’m Jamaican so I almost definitely am West African. But my maternal great grandad was Chinese and my maternal grandma has a Portuguese maiden name . Guessing ethnicity is pointless. |

I once got frogmarched out of an Irish bar in Portugal by the police after they raided it looking for some Eastern European gang members… luckily I had my passport and my thick brummie accent
The group then proceeded to call me Vladimir for the remainder of the boy’s holiday. |

People usually assume I’m mixed race because I’m not a darker skinned black person, I teased at school a lot they used to say I was adopted as both my parents are dark skinned, not realising I look identical to my grandmother in skin tone and appearance. :D
I’ve had people ask if I’m half Asian (East Asian) before which baffles me. There is Indian in my lineage further down though!
And then you get the “Where are you really from” when you say you’re British to people, it never ends. |

Actually sorry, I posted after a sudden spate of messages just now, and didn’t really think through the actual depth of daily attrition that I don’t receive and many people do - I hope I haven’t (with no intent) minimised or negated others’ experiences - just thinking. |

People have asked me if I’m Canadian “to be polite.”
I don’t think that’s polite at all but my accent, like my haircut, is a good litmus test. |

Plus- classic. The West Indies are full of so many different people from different diasporas. Many indentured peoples were there, you have the native people, you have west Africans that were slxves there and you have obviously Europeans that were there. I think it’s fascinating because people from all the different islands look like they’ve got family from all around the world. And I guess we do tbf. |

This is actually what I thought.
Dark hair and a name that’s one letter away from a Spanish beer. I honestly think that’s that’s likely to be part of it.
I’ve spent my whole life being told “you don’t sound Welsh”. Everyone over 50 seems to think there’s only one accent here and that’s Windsor Davies’s in “It Ain’t Half Hot Mum”

Not something I can say I have, must just look like a 'typical' British person.
My dad and paternal grandad have/had a olive complexion that tans really well and were always asked if they were from elsewhere til they opened their mouths and you got broad glasweigian area accent from them.
