If there’s something you really want to do but it’s no good for you and you shouldn’t do it, how do you distract yourself to stop yourself endlessly thinking about it and slipping up and doing it?
Ideas?
I’ve got to fill up a week, at least. Then think it’ll get easier. |

Archive it.
Whether it's mentally or physically archiving something, I archive it. Every time I get the urge to do that thing, I do something that's better for me. Duolingo. Going for a walk. Voicenoting a friend. After a while that urge kind of disappears. |

Oh seeing as SuperSlut has brought up sex below my previous post. Sex is a great distraction. And gives you all the lovely endorphins. |

Find something horribly addictive that itself requires it's own detox:
Gaming (immersive, e.g World of Warcraft)
Binge watching (e.g Criminal Minds, or something similar with 15+ seasons)
Dru.... Oops. Not those!

It's effective.
Really.
Well... It creates a circular problem. Like a never ending death loop of endorphin highs and lows. A dizzying roundabout of compulsions. |

I once had a bad habit I wanted to break. It was a habit for over two decades, and no not smoking. It was a secret I hid very well and no one, outside of my immediate family, knew I had this habit.
I tried to give it up over a dozen times in the two plus decades I had this habit. One day, I woke up and told myself I was only going to think about not doing it for an hour. Extended that another hour, and so on until I made it an entire day. At the most difficult part of the day when I knew I’d want to fall back into this habit, I made sure I had something occupying my mind and hands.
It’s truly mind over matter. Before I knew it it was a week of not doing this anymore. I thought I’d never ever make it a week without this. Then it became a challenge with myself. I’d want to tick off days on a calendar to show myself I could have a long streak of not doing this anymore. It became something I never even thought of after two weeks. It felt foreign after three weeks not something I did for over two decades. |

Have you considered a exploring a new interest? The films of a particular director, the work of a writer you've been meaning to check out. There'll be so many things you'll be learning it might focus your mind away from what you don't want to be thinking about. |

Cooking is going to feature heavily. Beware the number of cooking threads I will probably be posting! "
I shall look forward to these! I need to do some more baking! |

When I'm pushing myself to my limits doing a physical sport and I'm experiencing severe pain I fixate on a small scratch on my finger (for example) and make out (to myself) that it hurts more and I no longer feel the real pain; this distraction at an obsessive level, don't just bake but promise someone an extravagant cake within a really short ti_eline, there'll be no room in your head to think of anything else.
