Please No politics. but what do you hate about the modern world. As a child of the 70s for me it has to be when a new “track” is “dropped” rather than a new song is released.

Technology slowing down or crapping out after few months to a years use, when technology from the 80s and 90s is still going strong.

Basically all this stupid micro updates to technology which stems from corporate greed. Less a out consumer quality and more about bank quantity.

If people haven't seen it already, I recommend the article 'The "Enshittification" of Tik Tok' by Cory Doctorow. Don't be put off by the title – it discusses the phenomenon of "platform decay" more broadly, explaining why everything internet and tech-related is getting so much shittier so fast.

The fact that people don't talk on the phone anymore and a lot are too scared to and will only manage a few minutes. People actually have anxiety over it.

Toys where you have to collect them all and kids get left devastated they didn't get the rare one and won't be the cool kid in school, yet hates the one that does have the rare.

I agree with FitIrish on the technology comment he made.

Mobile phones, I used to enjoy making plans at the end of a Saturday night about where you'd meet the next weekend. If you said you were going you were going to be there no texts at 6.45 saying you didn't fancy it. I speak to some younger people now and they can't understand how people organised themselves before mobile phones. Sad times he says typing into a forum on his mobile phone while sat at home avoiding the pub...

"When did a tv series become a season?!? I do actually feel old now "

Since the 1960s at least. In the UK the terminology was that a 'series' was the show, and it was divided into seasons. More recently we've shifted to 'series' instead of 'seasons'. So you shouldn't feel old - you should feel young!

Parking a car is no longer remotely simple. It doesn’t matter how many parking apps you download, the next car park is always on a different one. And it takes forever to register yourself, your car and your card because it inevitably fails the first two times. And you never really know if it’s actually worked.

The disconnection of society for me. In my childhood, I was part of the generation that grew up with tech (a digital native), but in the early stage as it was flowing into the mainstream, so I still got to experience people going down the park in little groups and doing real life stuff. But all I see now is people walking around looking down at their phones and less people out and about hanging out.

Young people talk far too fast and with a degree of almost cartoonish exaggeration that I find grating.

I first became properly conscious of it when watching the Star Wars sequels a few years. The lead characters were all just *screeching* at one another. Took me right out of it. No dignity or gravitas at all. Took me a little while to realise they're not there for *me* to identify with. They're like that for the YouTube generation to identify with.

Nuclear power has to be top, as a child I remember Chernobyl, it’s contained now but Is on going and will be for thousand of years to come

The we have another on going situation with Fukushima, this hasn’t had quite the same publicity as Chernobyl for one reason or another

The corium has melted through the containment and it contaminating the pacific

Right now the ground water run off from the mountains is being frozen around the plant to stop this, the plant needs constant sea water to cool and contain the remains, the sea water is then filtered so not as radioactive and has just recently started to be released into the pacific

People not really giving a shit. I think there has been a shift in attitude since covid and some people are less tolerant/ interested in others be it customer service or whatever. We are losing the ability to communicate on a basic level as younger generations are interacting online more.

I think parenting has declined too, parents doing more for their kids rather than if it's something they can do, let them do it. Being a friend instead of a parent for an 'easy' life.

Fuck online shopping, I remember when people only did it to find a bargain, the whole point of internet shopping was that it was significantly cheaper now there doesn't seem to be any difference between the two except having to pay extortionate delivery costs at a less than convenient time when you are probably not going to be home.

Vehicle tracking absolute bane of my life work questioning everything combined with they track our phones and tablet where's the privacy these days.

Instead of asking you how you're doing people assume you're doing fine if you posted on social media somewhere.

This has actually been said to me a few times!

I stopped posting on social media years ago and somehow they know I'm still alive.

"Banks. What's the point in them?

A does some work for b, so b gives a's money to c who then will get funny if a wants too much of their own money back.

So many times had trouble getting to my own cash because a bank has it. I don't understand it at all, I've literally never had a single issue with cash. "

How do you pay bills? Drive around every month and hand cash to utility companies? Drive to wales to pay dvla? Turn up at hmrc with a bag of cash?

Would be a total pain in the ass if I was handed my salary in cash each month and then had to pay bills in cash.

With bank, credit card, debit card, my financial affairs are so straightforward, and so much safer than doing it with cash.

True. In a small number of cases, weight gain is due to medical reasons. But not in the numbers we see in the general population in this country.

Calories consumed vs calories burned is a simple dynamic that we can’t hide from.

I want to know about when you last read a book to your child? Built a den, just cuddled on the sofa or allowed them to free play with loose parts, pots, pans, anything and I do believe that this is the reason we are seeing an increase in children presenting with attention deficit.

It was a representative side that was largely made up of retired players."

On both sides for reference.

And it was 7 nil in 20 minutes.

These aren't ex England players

These are ex Wrexham players before they were bought. These are awful footballers. They couldn't get on the bench of the 20th placed team in the Premier league.

This Mr Woody yes.

I've found this a really interesting thread OP, thank you.

I'm not a big fan of materialism in the world, the apparent confusion between what I NEED to have and what I WANT to have.

The sentence 'I can't afford' (insert something needed here - heating/lighting/electric bill etc etc) because its clouded out by a big mobile phone bill/tv subs/expensive car/meals out/takeaways/expensive food shopping/big holidays etc. I am of course generalising here. I just think society is moving away from core values in some cases.

I am also though a big fan of everyone living their lives how they choose too.

Yeah this too.. or ones who film while something bad is happening instead of trying to help

Yes I realise that, my point was that is not how it is being reported and is an, all too common example, of people not reading past a headline.

"That virtually everyone is fat now and obsessed with food.

that is a horrible, sweeping generalisation... we can't all be as bloody perfect as you....

It's the truth though and I used to be 5 St heavier.

It is the truth, and it's by design too, 95% of the crap in the shops isn't even food, the piles of chocolate beside the checkout isn't by accident, people don't move their bodies anymore either they just sit at a screen

Yes exactly, 50 years ago virtually no one was fat, now it's blamed on virtually everything apart from eating too much like the menopause lol"

Some medication can cause weight gain , so it's not always that simple...for someone who used to be overweight you're incredibly judgemental

To be fair to readers, the initial publication of the story clearly stated that it was the official women’s US team, and it spread from there. The article I saw regurgitated the original story, no mention of why was actually playing etc.

Were the lineups listed in any match report that you read?

Sorry , had to google him. He is 47, and describing him as a journeyman wouldn’t be unkind. 19 clubs, some of which I had never heard of

You’re welcome. There has definitely been a shift from “want” to “need.” Expensive phones, streaming tv, takeaways, lease car are seen as essential rather than a luxury by many.

If you didn't know who Lee Trundle was, I'd imagine you never followed football that closely, he was a very good player.

I watch quite a bit of football. Anyone who plays professional football is a fantastic player.

But he would not appear in a lost of the thousand best players to ever play in the UK. Solid, journeyman professional.

"Please No politics. but what do you hate about the modern world. As a child of the 70s for me it has to be when a new “track” is “dropped” rather than a new song is released.

Anyone else?"

The terminology derives from dance/EDM type music, named after the transition from a long intro section into the main section of a song, which is called a "drop".

These genres of music typically have extended intro sections in order to give the DJ enough lead-time to mix the record in & fade out the record that's already playing.

Oh ! just thought of something that rattles my cage and that is the need of those that use modern technology to cause division and spread their hang ups in the guise of 'only joking'. They totally lack courage and decency.
