BMI is 1 useful metric to assess how big someone is

A good doctor will never use 1 metric to make a definitive statement

If you work out there’s a good chance you got some muscle carrying some of that BMI

Although, BMI should be seen as less of a test about “fatness” and more a test about how much stress your heart is under

Being heavier, whether it be fat or muscle, places extra stress on the heart and for optimal health and longevity we should all be aiming to be in a healthy BMI range

In all seriousness BMI is a useful indicator but shouldn't be taken as definitive. At the other end of the scale I lost a lot of weight some years ago to the point of looking skeletal. BMI said I was a 'healthy' weight but that was bollocks

According to BMI, if your 5 foot 10 and 15 stone after being in the gym 5 times a week for 5 years, your clinically obese..

Just wait until hair starts growing in places that it never used to. Pubes start growing on your shoulders.

Your nasal hair makes a sprint for your top lip.

Your ears decide they want to sprout some exceptionally long and dark hairs.

Skin tags start appearing and growing. You have to learn how to deal with these little bastards before you can’t wear a t-shirt because it looks like you have 5 nipples.

Then salt n pepper in your hair becomes enclaves of pure white. To saying nothing of what happens to your pubes (probably why so many older swingers shave them off)

Say goodbye to your chances of growing a strong dark beard. Bits of white will always be visible.

None of which affects your mood, but one day you’ll wake up and wonder when was the last time you went to sleep without a mid-sleep trip to the toilet for a piss. You’ll be permanently knackered and grow into a grumpy old bastard.

Getting older is a shit show of terrifyingly grotesque things that happen to your body. I’m scared to find out what’s coming next.

My big brother is a body builder, won many awards and his BMI lists him as overweight.

It doesn’t distinguish between fat, bone mass or muscle. Body fat percentage is probably a better indicator.

Probably the right way to think about it. Online there are examples of torsos at different body fat levels so OP you can see where you are. Apparently around 15% is a maintainable and healthy level but you won't have defined abs either.

I'm around 20% but going to the gym to weight train 5 times a week for a over a year . I have only started sorting my diet out to suit in the last 4 months especially as I wasn't on enough protein. Had a massive blip due to surgery, Xmas and was then ill where I just wanted carbs for days and no gym for 6 weeks.

I'm on the high end for BMI. My waist height ratio says dangerously underweight. I have very little muscle mass and what fat there is is not dense. When it comes to tall females it's definitely out

Well no, you can have a lot of muscle and not be a body builder & BMI still be inaccurate for you, like I said it doesn’t distinguish fat, muscle or bone mass, but can still be useful for heart disease risk.

Body fat percentage is more accurate.

BMI is bullshit. Body fat percentage is a much better indicator.

I had a full body scan done as part of a health check a few years ago. My body fat percentage was 15 per cent, which is pretty decent and within recommended range, but my bmi was 27.5 which suggested that I was overweight. Doctor immediately said ignore that, makes no sense if you have much muscle.

Absolutely. BMI is antiquated and prone to inaccuracies for many reasons. But it is also a very simple and quick bit of math which is probably why it's so widely used still, over a set of bodyscan scales.

PBF is a far better indicator or vascular/cardiac and general health.

I can remember signing on with a new doctor about 40 years ago. Cursory check, details etc.

I was then....6'5", 16.5 stone, 50" chest, 36" waist, 29" thighs..... serious rugby player, trained 3 times a week.

Was told I'm overweight.

Queried it. He said....6'4", medium frame, need to be about 12.5-13.5 stone (apparently, the chart only went up to 6'4"!!!).

That was the forerunner of BMI.

Today, BMI says I should be between 10.5 - 14 stone!

My doctor agrees that if I lost something like a third of my body weight (to be in the middle of my "ideal" weight range) I could pass as a holocaust survivor!!

BMI is a guide, and a rough guide at that!

I see many people miss the “stress placed on the heart” part of bmi

If your 5’9 and 17 stone your heart doesn’t give a fuck if it’s muscle or fat, it’s still working extra hard 24/7/365 to keep your big ass alive

My BMI has me as overweight and not closer to

‘obesity’ than ‘normal’

I don’t use it as a guide but I have a digital scale that calculates my bf %, BMI, hydration and other things

The whole BMI thing is utter nonsense anyway!!
