"‘It is literally impossible to be a woman. You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don't think you're good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we're always doing it wrong. You have to be thin, but not too thin. And you can never say you want to be thin. You have to say you want to be healthy, but also you have to be thin. You have to have money, but you can't ask for money because that's crass. You have to be a boss, but you can't be mean. You have to lead, but you can't squash other people's ideas. You're supposed to love being a mother, but don't talk about your kids all the damn time. You have to be a career woman but also always be looking out for other people. You have to answer for men's bad behavior, which is insane, but if you point that out, you're accused of complaining. You're supposed to stay pretty for men, but not so pretty that you tempt them too much or that you threaten other women because you're supposed to be a part of the sisterhood. But always stand out and always be grateful. But never forget that the system is rigged. So find a way to acknowledge that but also always be grateful. You have to never get old, never be rude, never show off, never be selfish, never fall down, never fail, never show fear, never get out of line. It's too hard! It's too contradictory and nobody gives you a medal or says thank you! And it turns out in fact that not only are you doing everything wrong, but also everything is your fault. I'm just so tired of watching myself and every single other woman tie herself into knots so that people will like us. And if all of that is also true for a doll just representing women, then I don't even know.‘" Nice tits.

Be yourself, be strong, be enough. Please do respond, debate nutures change " OK. Men and their thinking dominate the society in which we currently live, and therefore some women are put under pressure to be as society except, however not all pressure is caused by society, women compete with women in many ways to conform, whether that be in fashion, health, fitness etc. Also not all men have the same views on their own domestic, work and socitorial roles.

Interesting point I’d argue that men and their thinking don’t currently dominate society but the remnants of when they did are still very influential. Women’s views on women can be just as, if not more, damaging to women’s liberation

"The most difficult part is, in 2024 legally no one can define what a woman is. I disagree. As a woman, I’d argue the most difficult part is still not being able to walk home in the dark on your own in case you get murdered by a man " I haven't suffered with most of the struggles mentioned in your post, maybe because I was raised with low expectations on my shoulders & have not expected very much of myself throughout my life ever since. I also consider myself to be lucky that I don't really give two shifts what people think of me. I'm a realist- a very average nearly 51 year old with an average job, average looks & average outlook on life. I've had tough times which I'm proud to have overcome, good friends who care & a wonderful kid who's smashing life & acredits me with his positive upbringing. Oh, and regularly walk home a bit worse for wear at 2am without even considering that anyone (male or female) might hurt me. I really do feel sorry for women carrying the weight of these expectations & feel very lucky that I haven't felt the need to try and measure myself against these standards

And if all of that is also true for a doll just representing women, then I don't even know.‘ Can I see a copy of this rule book which mandates all of the above please? "Interesting that this thread is more about women and their interaction with men than what being a woman is. Not the same for the mirror thread. " I haven't looked at the other thread. Most of my problems with being a woman are about the expectations that are placed on me by a system that is led by male expectations (and their female allies/ enforcers). Being a woman just is.

Or Barbie was trying to conform in a patriarchal society.....Women have a lot of expectations on them in society as a whole and the movie highlights that. In Barbies world the Kens sole role is living for Barbie, he sees that the real world isn't like that...I feel it broke the barriers of gender expectations, however the film isn't anti men, it is exploring the detrimental effects patriarchy has on both genders. My Son went to see it with his Wife and they both dressed up as Ken and Barbie, I was proud that he 'got' and embraced the message, he was the one who told me I should watch it

As a woman, I’d argue the most difficult part is still not being able to walk home in the dark on your own in case you get murdered by a man Hey now. Violent crime is like 9:1 for perpetrators, so there's a 10% chance it could be by a woman If it was a woman I’d have a much better chance at winning Assuming women are weaker. Misogyny! Haha but prey, most of them are! (Side note, some of us can kick arse pretty fucking well. I’d not want to be the man who attacks me on a walk home in the dark because he’d get pain) As a general rule, with less bulk and strength to rely on, the worst people to face that way are people that have to employ craftier methods. One big bloke relying on brute strength is generally predictable and has the usual weak spots. Some tiny looks like no threat person generally has a lot more tricks up their sleeve " I can attest to this theory. I fight dirty.

On one occasion, it was when I was out with people from Fab and it took a very tall male Fabber to threaten violence before the individual would release me. I'm well aware that I am super vulnerable and that's why if anyone, ANYONE comes up and starts pushing or touching my chair without my consent, I will shout out loud and made a scene. I don't care if you are "just trying" to help a poor, feeble disabled woman on a slope, if you don't get my permission first, I'm gonna make a fuss. People don't like that. Apparently that makes me ungrateful etc. No, it makes me sensible. I don't know which person wants to help (that I don't need) and which one wants to mug me or otherwise harm me.

You will get hurt Such a bad mentality that leads to a false sense of security. My advice would be fight. Elbow to the throat. Knee in the bollocks. Run like fuck. That’s a good mentality. A bad mentality is telling women they’re weak and they’ll get hurt. I’ll fight and take a black eye or broken nose, leave the cunt with his bollocks in his chest and struggling to breathe on the floor over lying back and letting it happen " Just to explain myself I mean don’t walk the street thinking “I’m tough I fight dirty I can handle myself” You can’t against a guy and that mentality will put you in danger. Never rely on fighting to ensure your safety. You are weak and helpless against 99.9% of men if they want to hurt you Obviously when the time comes, fight for your life

"The most difficult part is, in 2024 legally no one can define what a woman is. I disagree. You will get hurt Such a bad mentality that leads to a false sense of security. I'm on wheels. I've had people grab the handles and move me without my consent, several times. "

It’s not gonna go down like it does in Charlie’s Angels I’d always tell the women in my life to run, scream, beg, anything to keep you safe and out of harms way Fighting should always be the last resort, especially for women. The reality of life is that in most cases, you can’t protect yourself I dunno the legality of pepper spray in this country, but that would be a better equaliser

"And fighting should not be a last resort. Women should be situationally aware (sadly). And should be able to defend themselves enough to get away from an unsafe situation. These are taught skills, which whilst aren't foolproof, are useful. Learning how being attacked feels like and how to respond are helpful. Then these skills could be used if needed. Boys learn to fight naturally, this should be extended to girls too. It's society that suppresses this. Whilst girls are supposed to be nice and ladylike, we're not helping ourselves. Sexual attacks are about power not sex. " I fucking love you sprockett

"I still think this thread is mostly about women in relation to men. How we protect ourselves, fight, go to the pub on our own. I find that a real shame because women are amazing just as they are without any reference to men. The women in my life are emotionally strong, resilient, caring, supportive, thoughtful and loving. Those aren't traits that only women possess, but that's what stands out for me and I aspire to. " I think a lot of issues are "in relation" to others. Like, being in a wheelchair isn't a problem if everywhere has adequate stable ramps, clean safe toilets, lifts that are working and will accommodate them, people who keep their hands to themselves, etc. A wheelchair is a means of transportation. But because people are chucklefucks and the system is not set up to allow people in wheelchairs to get around safely, it becomes a problem. Similarly, being a woman isn't a problem. There are problems that make being a woman more difficult.

Honestly, I don't have that many women in my life. My mother is estranged (my choice) and I don't have any other female relatives. My female friends and colleagues are all highly intelligent, hard working in their respective fields and very independently minded. As a linked thing, it's been interesting for me as the parent of a female child after having a male child first. The "praise" that many people default to about our daughter is how she looks. Not anything else. I find that frustrating. No-one started with "oh, how lovely your outfit is" to my son, when he was 6.

I think a lot of issues are "in relation" to others. That wasn't really my point. My point was that of all the things women choose to bring up for a thread about being a woman - it's all about dealing with men. I don't deny the problems that exist. " I mean, it does tend to be men who uphold the systems we have problems with? (some women too. pick me/ not like other girls etc)

Those aren't traits that only women possess, but that's what stands out for me and I aspire to. The words you've used to describe the women in your life are all the typical "emotion" type words that are considered positive attributes for women. I find that interesting in itself. " Id use some of those words for the men in my life too. I think they reflect what's important to me. I've got kids of both sexes and have gone out of my way to be equal in terms of compliments and avoid talking to my daughter only about her looks. I know it's an easy trap! I was very sad when my adult son asked recently if he was handsome. He thought he was ugly. I clearly didn't do my job.

" I don't never say anything to my children about appearance, to be clear. It's just interesting that for complete strangers, the most common "off the cuff" comments to our daughter are something like "oh, doesn't she look beautiful" or something about her clothes, whereas for our son, it might have been "gosh, isn't he so polite" or "how kind of him to do XYZ". Both my children are/were kind and polite. Both are/were well turned out. It's just curious to me. (I say "were" for my son because he's now an adult)

"Only read the op and not the comments but you don’t have to be anything. I never even think about anything of that. I just get on and do me. Maybe it’s my age or I just don't overthink. I don’t know. " I have not read it either but will agree whether a man or a woman you can only be yourself, not try to conform to stereotypes or expectations of others. Look after yourself, respect others and be the best you can in whatever you do in a comfortable, realistic and happy manner. Life is hard as it is. Why make it harder by trying to be anything else than just you and remembering that you will never meet the expectations of everybody else. If you try to, life will be even harder than already is. That's my mantra but of course evrryone is different.

But if your single , why can't you wake up on a Sunday and stay in PJ's and not have a bath until bedtime ? ..I am just retired and always in pjs until lunchtime most days...it's one of the joys of not rushing out to work om a dark cold morning..." "The most difficult part is, in 2024 legally no one can define what a woman is. I disagree. As a woman, I’d argue the most difficult part is still not being able to walk home in the dark on your own in case you get murdered by a man Hey now. Violent crime is like 9:1 for perpetrators, so there's a 10% chance it could be by a woman " I'll argue that it's highly unlikely a woman out on her own will be stalked and attacked by a woman. I didn't specifically state at night because we've had women and girls attacked in broad daylight local to me in the past few years. I think crimes should be put into subdivisions when being used as data for statistics.
